    In this video I am demonstrating an exercise of which I think it's one of the best to train these points:
    Finger independence; playing efficient, thuis making no unnecessary movements, and minimizing pressure needed to fret a note.
    Play all five examples, and you'll surely see lots of benefits into your own playing!

    Another annoying exercise:
    1. Drop your pick into the guitar hole
    2. Now try to get it out of it.

    A Lot of guitar youtubers have made a "things i wish i knew, while learning guitar" types of videos. This comment segment reminds me, of an essentiel piece of advice rarely included: Go easy om yourself while learning!! If something is very challenging, it is all the more important to take a Deep breath, and try to let go of the frustration. You will get it right in due time! Breath and focus my friend. you're doing just fine. 😊

    At the age of seventy I picked my guitar back up this January after a decades long hiatus; my granddaughter had received a guitar as a gift and asked if I could help her get started. So that's what we're doing, two newbies traveling together. This exercise looked, and initially felt, impossible. After about ten or fifteen practice sessions using this as part of my warm-up, I am just starting to get it. Hang in there.

    The exercise that helped me the most with finger interdependency and technique is the simple 1234 exercise. 1234 symbolizing your 4 fretting fingers you simply play it vertically and moving up the fret board. You do every possible combination eg. 1234, 1243, 1324, 1342, 1423, 1432. Then you start with your 2nd finger 2134, 2143 and so on.

    Excellent exercise for developing finger independence. I noticed something 5 min. into, that should help beginners...try just touching the adjacent strings, then pluck string by string for a couple of times softly , that is your signal to the fretting hand...no confusion, cuts out the middle man (eyes and the brain) . Not my native language so I hope I came through. And thank you mr. Davids, will support on Patreon and even enroll for a beginners course! Love to all from the lockdown.

    Paul, I really enjoy your tutorials, your calm and business like. A brief background, I am 66 have been playing for three yrs. now. Started because I spent 2 yrs. in bed stricken by a very rare nerve condition that basically paralyzed my legs and arms. Being able to walk a little bit I needed to do something about my hands. I grew up with rock and roll, someone gave me a cheap guitar, spent hours ( and still do ) practicing until the fingers started to move. I’m so grateful to the Lord first and the guitar second, now your added to the list. Its been and still is a very rough road, but it is now much more pleasant. With your help on technique and above all psychologically giving me new goals on theory etc. life continues to be pleasant, thanks. By the way just learned Far and Away by the Led

    By (at first) playing 6 notes of each tone before moving on, it's easier to train the previous finger to not rise up too high. That helped me anyway. When I try again, I will go 6ea on the first arpeggio then 3ea, then 2, then the way it's supposed to go.

    Seriously, just having found this I can say this method works surprisingly well. It's like rolling your fingers on hardwood when you're impatient about something, but it goes back and forth.
    So simple, yet so effective for building dexterity in the fingers.

    Don't forget to keep the two larger stings (E & A) muted with your palm. This really helps you to focus on hitting/hearing just the note you play and not extra background harmonics the two bigger strings will make. Excellent Exercise!!

    Killer ! I like it . Here’s a Killer Joe Satriani excersise.
    From here on in order .....
    1 = finger
    String = high E , B, G , D
    Fret # 1-16
    1D1 ,2G2 , 3B3 , 4E4 next switches pattern and moves all up one fret to (M7)
    1E2, 2B3 , 3G4, 4D5. next switches back to first pattern , all fingers moves up a fret ( if it’s a chord I haven’t a clue )
    1D3 , 2G4. ,3B5 , 4E6 Next switches back to second pattern , all fingers move up a fret (M7)
    1E4 , 2B5 , 3G6 , 4D7 Next switches back to first pattern , all fingers move up a fret
    I do this to the octave from where I started , then reverse direction back down to the start
    Same finger patterns for the middle 4 strings A , D, G , B
    Same finger patterns for the bass 4 strings . E , A ,D , G. Pain in the ass ! But I’m doing it all so much quicker and cleaner than when I started this 6 months ago .
    I like your finger muting and hammering . I’m gonna try to incorporate it into the Satriani excersise .
    Gets you all over the neck pretty much and used to switching fingers including the dreaded pinky ! Ha ! It’s constantly moving 4 strings up or down .
    A way to look at it is
    It’s a 4 string 4 fret “angle” finger placement , then move up a string and “reverse the angle “, over and over . It’s the same arrangement of fingers (M7 ) you have and flip them too .
    Thanks I hope this excersise helps . It’s worse to write than it is to play ! Ha ! Now try to play them as a chord ( forget it nearly impossible )

    Muscle memory is actually a term for the Myelin that forms like conduit around your nerves.
    The more you do a single action, the more Myelin forms, causing your nerves to send signals faster and with more efficiency.
    It is important to go slow and do everything to perfection, otherwise, your "muscle memory" will learn to do it the wrong way. This will only compound your issues.

    Use this as a reminder to how sweep picking makes this much easier than alternative picking. You wont have to mute it with your fingers. Rather, you can just use the sweep picking technique. Then practice that with different arpeggios and it becomes much more fun.

    Fingers share tendons which is why some fingers move together. This is also a way for your weak finger muscles to use the others as a crutch.

    Practice makes perfect slowly
