Rough riders are something I've had my eye on as a Tallarn player. They seem like very useful light cavalry to secure objectives early, and threaten enemy units in a very annoying 'not enough to focus, but too much to ignore' way. Plus with that movement, you can potentially surprise an enemy that assumes their super neat thing is safe on the backline. Edit: that terrain point is fair, makes them situational.
Depends on your playstyle. All of them offer something that can be most effective maximized in certain playstyles. Especially depending on attached leaders. Is the infantry for damage, move blocking, getting on points etc etc. Cadians sticky objective is invaluable for how I play. Command squads ignore modifiers ability comes in handy more often then people realize.
The sticky objective is so game dependent. Like if there’s big scoring at the end of the battle round, the enemy is out of reserves/movement shenanigans or it’s the last round, and something an enemy controls just needs to die, it helps. Outside of those circumstances you were better off with an infantry squad firing a mortar from behind cover the whole time
You haven't lived until you ride out a charge with Lord Solar and the Rough Riders.they are able to get everywhere you need on the battlefield and the face on your opponents face when you get 4 Melta lances through on a tank for 12-16 Wounds? Priceleas. Then they kill them. Then you bring them back.
When it comes to Hunting Lances, pick the Melta against anything that's not 1 wound models. Even if you're just charging Marines, use the Melta, you want your hits to kill, not maim in those cases. If you charge a big blob of 1 wound models though, the frag starts to come in big. Don't forget your goad lances of course, they're great at all times, but the melta is what you want unless they're charging chaff.
I’ve actually been enjoying the idea of the base infantry more. Lord solar or some other character, a command squad, and an infantry squad can have 2 or even a full heavy weapons squad. You can have some extra shots with mortars, and because they don’t require line of site, they can shoot anything in range behind cover and sitting on a backline. Or some extra anti tank with lascannons. Can never have too many of those. Also, this is purely a thought, but maybe a sniper is an interesting choice because it almost matches the range, so it can potentially chip down characters, sergeants, or problematic special weapons in enemy squads.
You can also use a mortar into my Platoon command squad to proc fields of fire without wasting an actual artillery piece. And, if you take a generic infantry squad also with a mortar, it makes blast weapons a little less effective against you. It probably won't ever come up outside of a mirror match, but it's something nice to think about if you're just shy of a full 2k.
I’ve loved Rough Riders ever since they popped a CSM Lord in Terminator armor in a single round of combat back in 4th Edition; there will always be a place in my list for these guys!
I kinda wish they had more varied infantry and Calvary. Especially cav since between horses and bikes and other more niche vehicles that could really let your infantry heavy guards still have some diversity in looks on the shelf and gameplay. Specifically bikes, like imagine a bike squad with side cars to act as a transport or that are used to carry extra munitions letting them give a unit shoot twice once per game. Hell if guard got a infantry medic to give some model regen slapping them or a character like a commisar on a bike for mobility to get where they need to be would be really interesting for infantry or mechinized infantry lists.
@@gookey388 a specific warlord that turns these units into battleline does not a battleline make. The problem is, Katachans do damage and Katachans are very good at delaying enemy units with melee combat. I am far from a good player, but I recently had a game against an Aeldari player. I saw his Wraithguards moving out of cover to kill my Rogal Dorn. Luckily, I had a squad of Katachans with Straken in a Chimera not so far away. Well, 20+ inches away. Several orders later, said Chimera deployed my boys near the Wraithbones. Sure they lost 4 models in the first round of fighting, but then they took down 4 WBs in return. Do not underestimate Katachanian melee ability. You can throw them into many matchups, and they probably won't win, but they will do solid damage so that the enemy won't be able to win either. If so much as one rifleman survives alongside the command squad, it doesn't matter if the squad is battle shocked or not, they will still hold it, and then in your turn, you can move off the objective and a tank or something else can clean up the point without sacrificing control. Add in a Castellan and/ or an Ogryn Bodyguard, and now you have some serious power on the assault, as well as fall back and shoot. This means you aren't spending two turns fighting over an objective and not moving like you would with other units despite them being more durable. Movement wins games, after all.
