  • Which solo strings sound better, BBC Symphony Orchestras lead strings or spitfire solo strings? I put them both to the test, side by side with a new composition of mine.

What a great comparison video! Interestingly enough, this very thing was my Big Decision 2023. I spent weeks going through so many different options... it was kind of overwhelming, really, and I think at some point I was just spinning my wheels. I ended up going with Spitfire's Chamber Strings and Solo Strings. The blending of those two libraries is magnificent. (I'm generally not going for big orchestral sounds in my writing...) Lovely piece of music you composed to give us a look at these two options!

For strings thats a good mix! Those two libraries were met for each other and though I don't have chamber strings, from all the demos and videos I've watched on them I love how intimate they are. Thanks for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed the piece :)

This video was E X C A T L Y what I was looking for and ironically your other video on solo strings bought me here. Spitfire, pay this man because I just paid you.

I really liked the Blend Mix too😊
The music definitely had that Ear Worm quality. I could still hear it even afterwards, and to me it was enjoyable
    Another Great Video
    5 Stars😊

@@Joe-blogcomposer maybe one day you can make a video on your process for writing and arrangement techinques.

Thank you for this comparison. I'm the sort of person that the topic addresses: I have BBCSO Core, and I'm looking at what I have to get next to fill some of the gaps in the instruments. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE Core. It's a fantastic tool, and has given me my own private orchestra, whose sole job is to play whatever the hell I feel like playing. But it does have gaps. One piece that I would love to mock up some day is Tschaikovsky's 1812 Overture. But that's beyond Core, as it definitely requires String Soloists (the opening of 1812 consists of nothing but four string soloists.) Similarly, I'd love to do Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis by Vaughn Williams. Again, having String Soloists is an absolute must.
So here's the dilemma: do I spring a bit over double the cost of Core for BBCSO Pro, or do I get the various bits individually? I really don't care about umpteen mike positions, I'm not creating movie trailers. With BBCSO Pro, I'd also get the Cor Anglais and Bass Clarinet - two other big gaps in Core, and I wouldn't have to buy them separately. So it really boils down to cost: How much would it cost to get the instruments missing from Core separately vs. the cost of upgrading to BBCSO Pro. That could be a topic of discussion for a whole other video: the cost of filling in all the missing instruments from Core - Pro vs getting them individually.

That’s a really good point! I’ll start doing some research into creating a video about that! It’s nice that spitfire do the cross grade price but as you said its like paying for core again.

Did you know that string instruments can play in up to 12 keys? Either by key modulation or just harmony variation. Give it a go one day.

Stupid comment... if the composition requires such an emotion, why play in all major/minor, octatonic, heptatonic scales? 😂🤦‍♂😎

However, your YT channel doesn't exactly shine with differentiated harmony or sophisticated modulation either 😂😂 So, give it a go one day!

Thanks! Solo strings won here. Next: Solo strings vs Sacconi Strings. Please let us hear the un-EQ’d tones as well. Thanks! (Hopefully before Black Friday!)

Thanks for the comment! One day this will happen when theirs budget to buy Sacconi! But the main reason I bought Solo strings over Sacconi is:
      1. Solo strings has a bass (Sacconi does not)
      2. Solo strings is cheaper.
      3. Solo string works within the free kontakt player while Sacconi requires Full Kontakt

As a composer newly transitioning into cinematic music, Spitfire's price:quality ratio just isn’t on the mark for me. I found better alternatives in every categories so far, and many of them free also. I found their libraries inconsistant, and not offering what I wanted. Each to their own, maybe they’re someone else’s idea of perfection but not for me.

10 years ago I would have disagreed, but now with the amount of amazing free samples and cheaper alternatives I have to agree with you!
