- Describes the best way of measuring your pipe to ensure that you order the right size of pipe for your project first time! Relates to all indutrial plastic pressure pipe systems, including PVC (PVC-U), CPVC - corzan, ABS, PP, PE etc.

Woa!!! This seems so basic, yet, it helps so much!
Here in Portugal we are used to see plumbing professionals using imperial measures but when one goes to a shop, you can only see metric labelled products, so this video is quite an help.
Once again, THANK YOU!
Americans (I/we) struggle with our legacy system (imperial) as much as the rest of the world struggles wrapping their heads around it.
Last weekend I purchased and cut 4” ABS when I was replacing 3” because it measured 3.5” and I assumed it was 4”. A glued flange, three elbows and 10 feet of piping went into the trash. A quick way to waste $75 really fast.
thx bud!
To simplify, if you were to go to a home supply store in the US, plastic pipe is mostly labeled with its inside diameter. To use a 3" ABS pipe as an example, the pipe would have a 3 in. inside diameter and close to a 3.5 in. outside diameter.
Hi, yes, this applies in the US and with all imperial pipe, although the internal measurement would not be exactly 3". The internal diameter of 3" is a "nominal bore" - an approximate bore - as it changes with the wall thickness of the pipe for different pressure ratings, specifications and materials. In many other parts of the world there is a mix of imperial and metric and with this, measuring the internal diameter (as it varies) is not a reliable way of identifying the pipe size.
This is wrong and misleading. The inside diameter is the standard measure of PVC plastic piping. Plastic pipe will expand overall including the outside diameter.
I need to replace the pipes that I have and would like to buy the proper size. I can't measure the diameter and I know that the circumference is 6 inches. That would give me a 1.90 inches for a diameter. There is no such pipe!
Hi there, the closest pipe we would have to that is our 1 1/2" pipe which measures 48.3mm on the outside diameter.
