How to Measure the Outside Diameter of Pipes, Rods, & Dowels Hack

  • Learn a simple hack for measuring the outside diameter of pipes, rods, and dowels when you cannot easily access the ends of the materials. Digital, dial, or Venier calipers are ideal for this task, but many do-it-yourself enthusiasts do not have these in their toolboxes. Many DIYers do have a tool that can be used as a caliper to help measure the outside diameters of pvc pipe, copper pipe, electrical conduits, wood dowels, shower curtains, rods, threaded rods, etc.

    What if the pipe more than 5 inches OD?

    Thank you this was very helpful. I have a question maybe you can help me with the answer. I wan to build a cage using the pipes used for fence link fences. I want to use the canopy fitting 1-3/8", what size (diameter) pipes should I get?

      I hope this helps...
      Here's a link to a canopy website that says for 1-3/8 and 1-5/8 canopy fittings, fence tubing should be used...
      www.canopymart.com/glossary/
      According to the Home Depot website, the outside diameter of 1-3/8 top rail fence tubing is 1-3/8. I verified this with a top rail at my home. So, you should be able to use the 1-3/8 top rail tubing. If still not sure, take the canopy fitting with you to Home Depot or other home improvement store.

    @Hacks by Dad ... Seriously? 1 1/16"? Heh heh! That is a 1" pipe.

  • @philgar7786
    @philgar7786 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    A person will be dealing with a minimum of 1/8", usually, 1/4" or 1/2". With decent depth perception, eyeball it with a tape measure behind the pipe. Or, if you really trust your eyes/brain, with a tape measure in front of the pipe. Of course, that is if you have nothing at all to obtain a physical measurement. Speaking of all the previous, use your imagination. For smaller pipes - I mean, we're not talking about sewer pipers here - do you have a paper clip? Any kind of thin, bendable metal like that? Use that to bend it halfway around the pipe to make something to measure.
