    Well Jo, one can also exagerate some of these fuel saving measures. In the airline I used to work with, the Catering Manager bragged with cutting substantial fuel burn by reducing the sugar packages for coffee/tea to half the weight. The result was that most of the passengers asked for a another package. Obviously there were not many more loaded, and passengers left the flight disapointed. The sugar packages were quickly replaced to it‘s original size. 😆

    Great video! One aspect of inflight service that’s always intrigued me is the duty-free trolley. Almost all airlines have one, including the famously cost-conscious Ryanair, and yet I very rarely see a passenger actually buy anything from it. Clearly it must generate enough sales to justify both the space and weight, especially since it includes bottled spirits and perfumes which are relatively heavy but which also sell for a high price. Do you have any background on the economics of in-flight duty free?

    • @weirdguybr
      @weirdguybr 2 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Not to mention that airlines that have duty-free service often have relatively large/heavy magazines in each seat with a list of the products; additionally, some airlines have a second magazine with their own self-advertisement - articles about their services/new routes/planes,etc - and reviews/descriptions of what is available on the in-flight entertainment system, all of which could easily be moved into the inflight entertainment system itself.

    I recently read that one low cost airline in India employs only only girls as cabin crew as they at least 10-15 kgs less than their male colleagues. This is their way of reducing fuel cost. By applying your formula, it translates into huge annual savings. I believe, flap settings also effect fuel burn

  • @OfficialShreyas2
    @OfficialShreyas2 2 ปีที่แล้ว +53

    Another idea i had:
    Maybe passengers can order their in flight meals before the flight starts. By doing so, the airline will know exactly how much food it needs to serve and won't need to carry extra food. Doing this can also reduce food watage as alot of food is thrown out after each flight.

      @@josh3771 Yeah, there's several benefits, and it's also good engineering, because as Elon Musk said, "The best part is no part, the best system is no system at all". Engineering is about minimalism, the reason things like airplanes get so complicated is that they're asked to perform very efficiently at many different tasks, which really drives up the complexity.

    Cabin air compressors and battery weight took away the perceived benefits of not having bleed air systems. Which is why the Airbus A350 still being heavier is more fuel efficient than the 787 on same routes and capacities and is more profitable to airlines. Upcoming 787 HGW versions are pointless too as they still do not have enough range than the Airbus A350.

Personally, as a middle-aged man, I try to pee as often as convenient, and certainly as close to a flight as possible because it takes a while to board, taxi, and get in the air and the Captain turns off his light to let us go to the bathroom without getting scorn from the flight attendants (who are standing up and doing beverage service even if the seatbelt light is on).

    • @volodumurkalunyak4651
      @volodumurkalunyak4651 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No. Plane operators cannot take less water for hand washing or toilet paper even if all onboard are forced to use bathroom prior to flight.

  • @smurface549
    @smurface549 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    You might want to verify your calculation at 6:00. 425 000t of fuel are definitely a bit more than 314 Million liters - the density of jet fuel is below 1kg/l. So the ratio is rather the other way around...
    What I was missing in this video is also the fact that carrying fuel for the trip increases the fuel burn as well. So if you save fuel, you need even less fuel, as you have to carry less fuel for the trip. That's maybe not so much of a thing if you happen to fly from Munich to Berlin, or London to Paris, but definitely it plays quite a role if you're on an intercontinental flight.

    Best way to save on fuel is build more bullet and maglev trains to avoid overland flights. Or hyperloop.
    Leave airplanes only for flights over seas.

    • @44R0Ndin
      @44R0Ndin 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Airplanes have the massive advantage that you don't need to buy the land under the airborne route they take to their destination. All you need is an airport at the source and another at the destination.
      Rail lines are incredibly expensive to lay down, despite their seemingly mundane construction. Doubly so if the rail line is electrified, like large portions of Europe's rail network. Maglevs are even more fantastically expensive per mile to build. And Hyperloop is the most expensive of all of them!
      So, in these economically trying times, where are you going to get all the money to build all that infrastructure?
      That's one of the great things about airplanes, sure the operating costs (and fuel burn) might be higher than other methods of travel, but they excel at being able to go nearly anywhere. Older versions of the Boeing 737 even had small kits of parts available to adapt them to being able to land on grass or gravel runways, and many Soviet-era Russian airliners are similarly able.
      Can't say that about any kind of railroad, you gotta lay the rails first, the train comes after. And it's those very same rails that are the expensive part of the railroads.

      In today's age it's killing more people than it's saving. No envelope protections, no tuning of handling characteristics to improve handling or to create similarity between models and led to mechanical hacks like mcas being required.
      Flyby wire aircraft's are still incredibly resilient including in catastrophic systems damage like the Qantas A380 that blew up an engine

    One of the benefits of the change to a composite fuselage is the ability to have a lower cabin altitude for better passenger comfort. However higher cabin pressure means heavier air - more weight! Is the weight added by -1000ft of cabin altitude significant on a big airliner? If so are any airlines really lowering the cabin altitude? Are any lobbying to raise it?

    • @rickochet6569

      Brilliant line of thinking here - I'd love to see an answer about this!

    • @andrewwinfield8592
      @andrewwinfield8592 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Not easy to find precise answers on-line but it's a vague point anyway - it depends on the inside air temperature/density and how loaded the aircraft is - passengers and luggage displace air.
      The impression I get is it's not significant enough to consider raising the cabin above the regulatory 8000ft, which has potential safety risks, but it may be enough for penny-pinching airlines to avoid lowering the cabin altitude.
      It could be beneficial for an empty cargo 747 to lower the pressure.

    No, don't ban the Krombacher! The crates are really aerodynamic and when you flip them, they work great as airbrake.

    It looks like specific weigh of jet fuel is more than 1 kg per liter (314 Mil liters = 425 Mil kg) which to me sounds incorrect. Happy to see you again.

    I agree everything you said in this video, which is a great video, however, if the airliners would actually lower the price of the tickets, as a consequence of fuel saving and ( suppose cleaner environment as less fuel would have been burnt) that would have been a fantastic way of improving the air travel. Or taking care of the crew ( both cabin crew and pilots). Unfortunately, this thing is not happening, and despite some flights may have been more effcient with regards to fuel saving due to less weight, actually more money go in the pockets ( yes, not ours) and air travel is becoming less confortable than it used to be. For everyone, pax and crews. :/

      Than it used to be? Depends on what you mean by “used to be”. Back in the hey day, flying was expensive as f***, and people would get dressed up to fly. It wasn’t something done by the average person very often, like it is now. As for fares recently, yeah they’re up some, and I don’t ever fly economy, but to give perspective- I can fly from NYC to Manila, to go to my house over there, for around $900 round trip right now in economy. Now we can say oh, well 2 years ago it was $675, and that’s true, but let’s all think about this for a second……..
      Idk the exact mileage from NYC to Manila, but it’s a freaking distance, guessing like 9,000, and I can absolutely guarantee even the most frugal person driving a Prius couldn’t do that many miles for cheaper than that, and it’d daggum take them a heckuva lot longer than 16 hours to boot…..

      The Democrat and other greenies want to increase the price of flight in order to make it too expensive for you to fly. They do this while they fly private jets.

    The main reason why aircrafts consume more when heavier is because it takes more energy for the airplane to climb the same altitude unit the more heavy it is so a heavy aircraft finds its optimal cruise altitude for a given flight lower than a lighter one and thus consumes more. Second reason which is quite negligeable. To keep the aircraft at the same altitude u need a higher angel of attack to generate enough lift force to cancel the weight force which induces naturally more drag

    A big part of an airplane's weight is the fuel itself. I wonder, would the tendency for ultra-long range aircraft have a negative effect here, as the average fuel carried is much more than for a shorter range? On the other hand, a refuelling stop burns extra fuel for taxiing, takeoff and climb. So, what would be the optimum distance in terms of fuel efficiency?

    What about wasting fuel while 45 mins of taxing and waiting for the gate at idling, circling the airport waiting for clearance. Also it is majorly inefficient to use engines for taxing versus tugs but we don't see any changes happening around that aspect .. All these suggestions are fine but are offset by the overheads needed for takeoff and landing, especially at busier airports IMHO

      Engines have to be on for long periods of time as that’s one of the preflight checks. Planes can’t just start their engines and go - that could be extremely dangerous. Taxiing under engine power could report any abnormal behavior before the plane is in the air.

    Interesting video. A suggestion, if I may. Using periods in numbers is confusing to many, since a period means a decimal point for many. Using a comma (which many understand) would also be confusing to those used to seeing a period. How about using the international ISO standard and simply use a space in place of a comma or period ... everyone can understand that without confusion.

    Another way to save heaps is to put all the passengers to sleep horizontally in capsules. No meals, no inflight entertainment, no cabin crew required! 🙂 They board the plane asleep, and are woken up after the plane lands. If the plane crashes or catches fire, they won't worry.
    Also, collect their farts. An average human farts about 2 litres of volatile gases a day, so 400 passengers on a long haul flight could produce about 800 litres of methane and other aromatic gases, which can be fed into the engines for more power.

    How about charging overweight passengers more (and skinny ones less)? A single overweight passenger not flying because of the higher price would pale all urine and olive calculations and would add to the comfort of the passengers sitting next to them.
