    I was just an average high-school wrestler but, man... the mental toughness it fostered in me is a trait that can't be measured in gold or fame.
    I've quit coke, booze, nicotine, and degenerate levels of obesity cold turkey simply because I woke up one day and said "I don't want to do this anymore" and completely stopped.
    Wrestling cemented in me that, as long as I never give up and stay in the fight, I can find a way to turn things around in my favor.

    • @davidth.o.g.2229
      @davidth.o.g.2229 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Totally feel you brother. I was average, but I killed myself to become better than I actually was. I beat so many guys who were stronger, faster, more skilled, heavier and just all around better than me. But I hated that they were better than me and made myself so tough and able to push after we were both physically dead that I would win matches in the 3rd after losing first 2. Finished with over 150 wins of over 200 matches between hs, freestyle and college (JC). Made me tougher than anything else ever could. Love everything it gave me. Cheers brother, to knowing how to give more than we think we have.

    Win or lose wrestling is something that makes you feel alive. Winning a tournament or even a hard match is a great feeling that I would consider it as a winner's high. Your at peace and no one can touch you after your accomplishment for sometime. Regardless if people like you or not, they respect your level of skill and determination for winning something so physically demanding and can't take it away from you with thoughts and bs opinions.

    I wrestled through middle and high school, with my two head coaches being a marine and then Sanshiro Abe, and those two men pushed me beyond my physical, mental, and emotional limits and turned me into steel. Wrestling is a step above every other athletic activity, and true wrestlers are simply different than other human beings. Almost every important lesson you should learn and trait you should develop in life can be acquired through wrestling. If you want your son or daughter to be the best human that they could be, consider introducing them to wrestling young… i wish i started wrestling much earlier in my life.

Up 3 to 2 and his competition was trying to set up the blast double all match. He can not find the opening, but they both go for it, face to face you could hear it, dang! Then they reset and both go for it again, but louder this time and my son pushes through and gets the take down.

    I belonged to a poorly funded inner city public HS collegiate team in the mid 70's. We were so poor in my freshman season, I shared wrestling shoes with my teammate. But what we lacked in funding we made up for in leadership and talent. These two factors led up to our team winning the public school league championship in my second season and I earned my own pair of shoes. It was a magical time in all our young lives.
    Since then, individual members of that championship team have gone through so many challenges. Everything from fratricide to depression, homelessness and cancer diagnosis. But no matter how bad things got, things that would have devastated other men, my former teammates found a way to make the best of their challenges. If not overcoming, learning to live and still function with them.
    I attribute this to the mental toughness we earned out there in the wrestlers circle.
    There is no sport quite like amateur wrestling.

    Man, I wish we had wrestling in Australia like they do in the United States and much of Eurasia. I have tried it as an adult and really wished I had it available when I was in high school. I prefer it to Judo because you don't seem to get quite as hurt and yet it seems to be much more useful in MMA.

    • @Banana_Split_Cream_Buns
      @Banana_Split_Cream_Buns 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Be Real we do. And we have good Brazilian Jiu Jitsu schools too, which is where most "wrestling" occurs here: in no-gi grappling sessions.
      Also, it is advantageous for Thailand being our number 1 favourite holiday destination. Definitely a lot of Muay Thai practitioners traveling between the countries.
      But my guess for the reason we don't do wrestling is similar to the reason we don't do Olympic weightlifting nor gymnastics, nor high school gymnasiums all that well. I think US high schools are culturally more centred around these certain types of sports.
      We do have a lot going for us obviously. It's no coincidence that both our UFC champions played a lot of rugby league, for instance.

    Wrestling was the hardest sport I ever did. An average wrestling practice was harder than a hard ass football practice. You could literally get a full cardio in warmups at the start of practice. A fifteen second drill could be tiring. I also thought the taller wrestlers were pretty damn hard bc of their leverage n the fact that they get pretty tough in the 171, 180 varsity weight classes. Wrestling requires every single muscle with strength, quickness and stamina thus making it such a hard sport. Surviving three rounds could be extremely exhausting, especially when on bottom.

    • @VanishedPNW
      @VanishedPNW 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Dan Gable was so influential that the sport has only started to explore new training methods the last few years. Dan Gable literally was American wrestling from about 1970 until recently. One could make an argument that wrestling STILL has not fully transitioned out of Dan Gable's influence. He trained so hard and did such little recovery that by 23 his wrestling career was over. He had this extraordinarily dedicated, single mindedness that is common among all people that are the best at what they do. He ate, slept and breathed wrestling. Anyway, I say all that to say that I agree with you.

    School hasnt started yet, but it starts in about 2 weeks. I’m going to be a junior. I’m having my first meeting with the head coach within the first week of school. Previously I’ve played basketball, but I stopped because I didn’t think I truly wanted it. I just wanted the attention. I wanted to get into football because I knew I wanted to be big and strong so why not do something with it, but then I found out that football has even worse injuries than wrestling. The head injuries are what scare me. Anyways, now im 16 and my mental health is really low. There are times when im so lonely and want to talk to people but at the same time im either mad or sad and don’t want to talk. For example, I’ll not want to talk to someone and then they pass me and I get sad that they didn’t say anything. I know that’s messed up and I need to fix myself. Sometimes I’m just sad or mad but don’t even know why. But also im starting to realize that I have fomo especially with weed because I hear about how everyone else has fun stories with it. I’ve wasted a lot of time trying to chase after a good time. My reason for joining wrestling is so that I can get stronger mentally and physically. I don’t want to be mad or sad all the time. I want to be able to man up and face the tough times. I don’t know if anyone will actually read this, but even if not it’s good to know that I’m holding myself accountable. When the wrestling season at my school ends, March 2025, I’ll come back and respond to this message whether with this same account or another account. Regardless, I will come back and share my experiences and stories with anyone who wants to listen. Wish me the best!
    -Maras
    Edit: I don’t know which day exactly that it will end, but ill come back to respond on March 31st of 2025

    In life there is no such thing as doing it by yourself, good or bad. But, one of the things I unexpectedly enjoyed after losing every match for a year or two, was winning. Whether people are interested in you or not, if they are in the gymnasium they are kinda forced to watch you. When you're the only winner in the entire gymnasium for those few minutes, it's like being on top of the world.
