    The fact that Lelouch never refuses the blame for Euphemia's massacre is the best insight to his core character.

      People often cite his accidental activation of Geass and his weird phrasing as an inexplicable plot convenience to drive the story but imo it’s a very insightful moment into lelouch’s character. He’s always very careful about what he says especially after acquiring Geass. I think the fact that when explaining Geass to Euphemia, he uses the hypothetical massacre as an example shows that, as the strategic mastermind he is, he had realized that that plan would be the easiest way to turn the Japan special zone situation into one that would benefit his goals in the long run, but he decided against it for obvious reasons. Despite this, this potential plan was still fresh in his mind so it was the first example of Geass he came up with when talking to Euphemia, and we all know what happened after that.

The fear of the possibility that he would lose control and succumb to the worst side of himself was everpresent, and at that moment his subconscious sort of took over.

    I like how Guts and Lelouch are his most praised protagonists despite how different they are. Guts is lacking motivation in golden age, he is wandering from battle to battle searching for some kind of purpose. He has a goal of revenge against Griffith but he's mostly wandering around struggling to survive, fighting for the simple right to stay alive. He's just trying his best to make it through the day with only a vague plan how to. He is relatable for that aspect of his character. Lelouch on the other hand is focused and calculated, deffinetly more proactive. He is more admirable than relatable. His goal is monumental and unreachable, jet he marches forward nonetheless. Both are great protagonists but I find them hard to compare because how different they are.

      @@nonce6382 Where do I start?
      Nina was a flawed individual, though I think that was intended by the writing. On the topic of her bigotry towards the Japanese think of it this way. She is an antisocial, timid individual who clearly doesn’t get out much in the world. She probably wouldn’t be witness to a lot of the mistreatment the Japanese get, all she hears is the Britannia propaganda and the acts of terrorism committed by resistance groups. The first time she hears about Suzaku is him being accused of killing the crown prince, she is held hostage and directly threatened by a resistance cell, and finally her idol, Euphemia, is killed by a terrorist leader. Oh yeah, and one of her friends turns out to be a terrorist all along and was lying to her. Now, the viewer has the full perspective on this but Nina does not.
      The events of Season 1 clearly have a horrible effect on Nina’s alright weak mental state, resulting in her being easily gaslighted by Schneizel into make the FLEIJA because it’s “What Euphie would have wanted.” Clearly ridiculous, but Nina was definitely not someone in the right mind. After the FLEIJA is actually used Nina gets woken up from her insanity and begins to realize what a terrible thing she has done.
      I don’t particularly like Nina, and she did some pretty fucked up things, but Lelouch and Suzaku also did a lot of apprehensible stuff. I just find the hate for her overly excessive. I can only really find pity for her personally. She was a person with mental issues who was manipulated by propaganda. This of course, isn’t to say that she has no responsibility for her actions.
      If anyone actually read through all of this, thanks! Code Geass is probably my favorite anime and I love talking about the characters!

  • @code.c.
    @code.c. 3 ปีที่แล้ว +564

    I think that Suzaku is often oversimplified and overlooked in terms of his depth. He is the way he is because he killed his father. As a child, he saw that Japan's resistance to Britannia was futile and that it was only resulting in more unnecessary deaths, and he took it upon himself to kill a family member at a very young age in order to bring about peace. In order to justify this to himself, he *had to* join the Britannian army to stop farther resistance and to try to stop the oppression by reforming the system from within. He *couldn't* agree with Zero's methods, because, if conflict was the right answer after all, then that would mean he killed his dad for *nothing*, and that thought is beyond unbearable to him.

      Alongside Lelouch, Suzaku is one of my favourite characters of all time. The way their moral philosophies clash is so satisfying, and I sympathise with Suzaku. He just wants to do the right things - and, unlike Lelouch, he doesn't believe the ends justify the means. That's probably another reason why killing his father messed him up, it went against his nature. He's a great character and I will never understand why he gets so much hate.

    • @whitelight2195
      @whitelight2195 2 ปีที่แล้ว +83

      The thing is that the evolution of Lelouch and Suzaku are a perfect mirror of one another, while Lelouch begin determined and without caring about morality one bit he slowly begin to doubt and ask himself if there was no better way and needs more and more push to continue going, while for Suzaku he begins caring a lot about morality but unable to make change happen and he slowly abandons his morality to bring results. As Lelouch grows a morality from his own mistakes and losses Suzaku shed it to bring more results. While Suzaku tend to be blinded by emotions, Lelouch repress his to unhealthy extremes. Lelouch and Suzaku are polar opposites. And their two ideals are incomplete without one another because acting without betraying morality means lacking results and totally betraying morality means overwhelming sacrifice, the optimal strategy is a little bit of both. And that optimal strategy birthed the ending where Lelouch used morality as his final weapon to change everything from the inside and the outside.

    My favorite thing about Lelouch is that everything about him screams "I'm the villain!" He often has that scowl on his face, with his student and Zero personas all using dark colors, his custom Burai, the Gawain, and Shinkiro all look evil and menacing, and on paper, he is opposing every logical "good" system in the show. On paper, it looks like Suzaku and his noble steed the Lancelot are the good guys here, Zero and his Black Knights are just a rebellious element that needs to be put down. And yeah, with some of the things Zero does, he absolutely is the villain, so many people have died because of his actions. But in the end, it's Lelouch that seeks to truly change the world for the better, and by god, the man actually does it.

    • @damienblack6749
      @damienblack6749 3 ปีที่แล้ว +48

      I fully agree. The thing with Lelouch is, he says very early on "You can't change the world with pretty words alone" and he shows that time and time again. While people are a casualty of his actions ( Shirleys' dad being a good example) he still has an overarching good intention. I do like that how you said, his entire presentations is that of a villain and Suzaku is the good guy, it shows a great representation of an idealist in Suzaku and a realist in Lelouch. Suzaku has a blind faith in the system and believes things will change if you wish hard enough,even in his wish to become the knight of 1 and free Japan it's only focused on Japan, whereas Lelouch doing everything he did helped the entire world.

    • @chubbyalonso3687

      I think Lelouch is light-years ahead of Light(no pun intended). Now Death Note is a great series and Light is a well-written character don't get me wrong, but he gets extremely one-dimensional halfway into the series and I feel like Lelouch is way more layered and multi-faceted. Lelouch's ideology is that the ends justify the means and he constantly juggles between what is right and wrong and eventually takes himself out of the equation to create a better world, which was totally in line with his character from the very beginning.
      Light on the other hand started with the intention of making the world a better place but then got sucked into an ego clash with L and eventually developed a god-complex and from that point onward, his only motivation was to eliminate whoever that stands in his way in order to feed his own ego so that he can become the "God of the new world". I understand that that's the message that the creators are going for but it doesn't change the fact that Lelouch has more depth to his character.

    The thing I find more appealing about lelouch as a character or a protagonist compared to those like naruto or light is the fact that at the end of the day, he is still human. Light had his intense God complex with lack of any self restraint. Naruto on the other hand is too idealistic. ( FYI These two are also my favorite characters). Lelouch on the other hand is a realist. He doesn't have the ideal goal right from the beginning nor does he blindly follow idealism.
    Light already started his goal of forming an ideal world since episode 1 while naruto was spamming talk-no-jutsu throughout the series. Both these things are way too 'not so realistic ' (personal opinion, and I know they have the ability to do so)
    Lelouch on the other hand, started with revenge. He understood his powers and used his genius mind for himself. That is something anyone would do in reality.
    He gradually understood his mistakes, had character development, had his own internal conflicts and reality checks and finally took the step to be a sviorand an emperor.
    That's why he is so well written

Unfortunately, Lelouch's actions caused the death of Euphy and caused a massacre, but instead of justifying his means, the innocent mistake that caused this tragedy, he accepts the result, and the sins of his actions.
    If he is willing to say that all that matters is the results, then he cannot possibly justify his actions by the means which they happened.

    He's like the Napoleon Bonaparte of anime. What makes him even better is that he always seems to take sole responsibility for his actions good or bad. While his whole line about "the only people who should kill are those prepared to die themselves" struck me. It's easy to cheer on death from afar and the safety of a computer but to actually risk your life in a gamble is a whole other matter altogether. Another thing I like is that he's flawed, he doesn't "always win" nor should he because realistically no one has that ability. It makes it all the sweeter at the end when the literal whole world is banding together to fight his illusion of a tyrannical emperor behind thousands of masked soldiers and he's playing them all along. I remember him saying that "now the whole world can change not from the force but around one table for discussion." he achieved Nunally's wish to make the world a gentler place for everyone, at least for a little while. And the fact remains that the greatest conquerors of all are the peace-loving kind.

    There's just so much to like about this show. I feel like it's played at least a small role in shaping my outlook on the world. When lelouch causes euphemia to slaughter everyone and he swallows his regrets and self hatred in the moment and says "I have no choice but to exploit this to the utmost", that was pretty powerful for me. There's a lot of things I feel guilty for in my life that just can't be taken back and the idea that since I can't take it back, I have an obligation to gain as much as I can from it, I think is something that really helped me cope during some of the harder times in my life. If the sacrifices have already been made, all you can do at this point is try to make that sacrifice as close to worth it as possible and getting caught up on guilt would only be self serving and disrespectful to the sacrifices made.

    Honestly, after watching a goooood number of animes I can only say that there's only a handful of characters in the anime universe that have as much depth and layers and realistic character development as Lelouch and Lelouch is basically at the top of the list. You hate him but you love him. You love him but you hate him. He wasn't portrayed just as a one-dimensional character but one with a very realistic and practical growth... He did what he had to, yet he messed up and paid the price and lost at times...but you just can't help but feel emotionally attached to him. In terms of the intricacy of the plot, CG is followed by Pandora Hearts MOST definitely. The premesis of these is really different honestly, but their endings are like this bittersweet treat that you can't help but want even if they leave an almost regretful aftertaste in your mouth. Yet at the same time, you feel happy to have taken them.
    Code Geass is still my no.1 anime. And I just don't think id ever be able to change that. Anime creators should make more complex and emotionally deep characters which showcase the psychological war. Tokyo Ghoul is the, 110%, the second-best anime of all time (in my opinion)

    Code Geass is one of the first anime I watched and it became my favourite not shortly after. I ever since searched for something that could satisfy me as much as Code Geass did. I watched it 20 by now in 3 different languages and I feel like tho more and more people on social media seem to give Code Geass the recognition it deserves (imagine EP25 Re released nowadays, the hype would be insane (looking at you JJK and AoT) but there some points I feel like some people don’t seem to notice:
    The only ones who should kill are those prepared to be killed - Young Lelouch in the beginning of the series after gaining the “power of the king“. Lelouch was an arrogant schoolboy at that time, he would have never sacrificed himself for mankind or anything like that. He wanted to stay alive to live with his sister Nunnally after all, since he was part of why she was happy.
    Lelouch - the one who wanted to live on with his sister died with a smile for the future of mankind, knowing the people will never know what he did for them
    Nunally - the girl who only wanted to live with her big brother above anything, may it be in fear or hiding, has to live on without the person she loved to carry out what his sacrifice has done for mankind, knowing the people will continue to hate her hero as the new leader of Britannia
    Suzaku - the one who above all else wanted to die to atone for his sins, which was the only way he believed to redeem himself, had to live on in the name of Zero, serving mankind behind a mask and without a normal life without being able to die, without being able to return to Euphie, the one person he loved, who got killed by his only friend, who died smiling in his arms.
    CC - the girl who was immortal and wanted above all to die, lived on because of the every man she tried to use to be able to end her own life and who she loved and showed her the true meaning of life, all without him, which is loosing the ones you love being one of the reasons she wanted to die in the first place.
