Aladdin Heater Restoration

  • Restoration of the British-made Aladdin Blue Flame Heater / Camp kerosene stove. The heater / stove in general is in good condition. It is also very dirty and rusting parts. No holes in the fuel tank. The wick needs to be replaced. But I have ordered from England to wick awhile until Turkey. That's why I used the old wick. I used heat-resistant aluminum paint on the interior surfaces. The enamel on the chimney was beginning to spill. Using 1100° C resistant exhaust repair paste, I filled the cavities and painted the exterior surface with heat-resistant matt black. The result is a handsome Aladdin. :)
    --------------

Takes me back to my childhood my dad used Aladdin heaters in the greenhouse and we had one of these for the shed for brewing up tea and cooking on.
He would take us to this crazy local hardware shop to fill up fuel cans with paraffin.
Totally nutty place it was, it was a Tudor timber frame building and over the years it developed a very prominent lean it looked like the building was ready to fall over.
They actually had a fuel pump inside the shop not outside that was fed from a tank in the basement the entire shop just smelled like paraffin.
It was ran by this old fella and his 2 sons the sons were in the 60's so the old man must have been 80 plus and they would always have a hand rolled cigarette on the go while pumping the paraffin.
How the place never went up in flames is beyond me. 😁

Grew up with two of these .Same color and everything. Every now and then it would run out of fuel while we slept and the wick would smoke and we’d wake up the next morning with black around our noses . It was the late 1960’s. Brings back fond memories ~ thanks for an excellent video !!

Had one of these in the 60's. Used to warm our living room up. You are supposed to let the wick soak up the fuel for a couple of hours before lighting it. Not all of the wick was fueled, thats why it was not burning even. Even a dirty old wick will soak up the fuel.
I enjoyed the video. Great restoration.

The wick simply needed trimming (available from the same site as you obtained the other bits) and the heaters were designed to run paraffin not methylated spirits. You did a nice job but a shame you didn't maintain the original sage-green finish.

  • @Jollyprez
    @Jollyprez 4 ปีที่แล้ว +21

When you're working with kerosene wicks, you must ensure that you trim them to the same height all the way around, otherwise, you'll have differing flames which can cause it to have more fumes. That particular heater is a "Blue Flame" heater, and when fully warmed-up will show a bright blue line at the top edges of the wick. Very neat.

Blimey...that's a blast from the past. One of four Paraffin Heaters we had to heat the house. One of my jobs to earn pocket money as a kid back in the 60's was to clean the wicks to keep the flame burning cleanly. You lifted out the perforated central component and replaced it with the correct wick trimmer which you rotated back and forth trimming the wick and removing the carbon build up. Happy memories!

First class job, Sir ! My mother's version of today's "slow cooker". She would prepare the ingredients of a 'stew' put it on one very similar to this, let it simmer away all day, and when Dad came home from work it would be ready to eat, & enjoy I may add. Thank you for sharing.

Thank you so much. It is necessary to choose the paint that is resistant to the highest possible temperature. Black and gray colors can withstand up to 600 degrees. But still the paint sheds over time.

I am just starting to restore the same exact heater. I was wondering how you were going to deal with the "pitting" on the chimney and on the cook surface on top. I am glad you showed that you used the exhaust system sealer cement. I wouldn't have thought of that. Now I know how to get the surface nice and smooth. I am thinking of leaving just the bare metal when I am done, instead of painting it. Thank you!
