    I left the Luminar program at version 4, and Capture One doesn't just look overpriced, it is and has been from the beginning. I had all but left On1 but with recent improvements have returned to give it another try. Hopefully On1 continues to improve and will become my permanent Lightroom replacement after leaving Adobe for good in April. Thanks for sharing

      So you're finally pulling the plug. Why so? Capture one has always been overpriced but 6x difference is pushing it. Yes Im sensing people are giving this a second look. Masking for me used to be the reason to pay extra for C1 but now it's harder to justify.

    Excellent review, thanks. Straight to the point with no time-wasting filler, and great image examples. It's amazing to me how photo apps with this feature have improved at object selection over the past few years. Another year or so, and they may all be nailing the palm tree cleanly on the first try as well. This improvement does indeed allow faster, easier image editing and is worth paying to stay up-to-date.

      Thanks for watching. Interestingly the improved object selection just came in the past few months. Capture One was around Oct 2023, Luminar in April and ON1 in June 2024. Don't know why this is so, but glad to see this happen. Really moves the needle in the editing experience.

    Good comparison of this three RAW converters. However, stability, speed and natural colors of Capture One Pro are best and especially at the black Friday week, you can get Capture One Pro cheaper (up to 50%). So far, your comparison seems to be not catching all the parameters that are important for me.
    Anyway, I have all three programs and prefer Capture One as standard RAW Converter for my photos, Luminar NEO for portraits and people and ON1 Photo RAW 2024.5 with Brilliance AI for give good landscape photos the final look in colors.
    I think all of this three RAW Converters have their strengths and weaknesses.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I agree. Colors and tone adjustments of Capture One make it the best RAW converter. I'm an owner as well. I do find the though search of C1 was way slower than ON1 in my catalog of thousands of files. Not sure if its my setup or the software. They all have their strengths for sure. ON1 price is also much cheaper. I like luminar for its HDR, focus stacking, and generase.

      @@takebetterphotos8132 I noticed lower speed of a big catalog with a really high number of pictures by Capture One similar to Lightroom, that I used a few years ago (no abo). My solution is to use for every project an catalog for its own and for searching photos I have a good folder structure on my SSD and use Excire Foto.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I see glad it wasn't just me. Lightroom for me didn't have the slow return of results as C1 which could take minutes for basic file searches. I'll look into Excire Foto. Thanks.

    Good comparison! I've used Capture One for several years because it has always given the best image quality (IMO) right out of the gate, and I've tried them all. And yes, C1 is WAY overpriced. ON1 has made solid progress in all areas and I think it is a real contender.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Yes surprising progress. Wasn't like this in years past. Good for them!

  • @ednsb
    @ednsb 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +3

    good comparison but you should have probably included the Adobe masking features in Photoshop and Camera Raw. Also, On1 does have both a luminosity and color mask which can be applied against the super select mask. It also feathering features. One great thing about On1 is you can do more than just tone and color corrections but also all the effects like blur, glow, dynamic contrast etc on specific parts of the image via super select. .I have all those products other than CaptureOne which is so over-priced it is unbelievable.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the valuable insights. Yes a lot of people pointed that out. I chose these three editors because of their similar point-and-click masking workflow. However I just did a Lightroom masking comparison in my last video. With regards to the luminosity mask, I find that clicking the tool resets the mask completely, as such my understanding is you can't refine an object mask with a luminosity mask in ON1 and vice versa. I actually did not know about the color range mask. I shall that try that out.

    • @lescornwell
      @lescornwell 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The three programs that are compared each offer a perpetual license. Exactly that feature drove me and many others away from Adobe when they went subscription.

      @@takebetterphotos8132since I took a lot of firework photos on the 4th I thought I would try to do a composite with masking. I tried PS, LRC, NEO and on1. None of them did good on it. But on1 got more detail than the others but still not good enough. I tried refining but it ate up most of whatever I ran it over.

    By default On1’s Object AI has a rather large feathering hence the halo around the palm tree, but you can adjust the feathering afterwards.

    Great video!!!
    I just watched an Australian guy pick apart both Affinity and ON1. He could not stop himself saying bad things about both.
    Can't you guys get together, duke it out, and come to an agreement?
    BTW, some of the masks you created with ON1 were not all that good either -- you did them quickly to cover that up.

    I use ON1 since about 2 years. It has come a long way since, and the masking capabilities are just amazing. And the "Effects" features are just great and something that C1 almost completely lacks. BUT, even though - way - "overpriced", (even with discounts to be had sometimes), I bought C1 as well, because I "feel" that it excels in the tone and color department. Maybe you can achieve similar results with On1, if you know how to appropriately combine all the (effects) tools, but who would not prefer the software which provides better looking colours "right out of the gate", as another commentator called it. And as a Fujfilm user, I also appreciate that C1 offers all the Fujifilm film simulations, and in very good quality indeed. Conversely, On1 offers only some Fujfilm profiles, and of mediocre quality. Hopefully, On1 will up - or streamline - its game in this department too.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Wow you bought two editors! I agree that C1 has the best looking colors and tone adjustments. i've never used their film simulations but I wouldn't doubt your assessment that C1 gives top quality. Whether people would pay 299 for C1 over 60 for ON1 is of course another matter. I guess it depends on how much you value the photos 😀 Good to see a lot of choice nowadays. I would really be curious to see the sales of each software how people are responding to the value proposition 😀

  • @luche21

    Nice review, but one thing that was completely left out was color masking... Capture One's Color Editor tool can easily define a color range and create a mask from it, which goes a long way for things like tree vs background example in this video. with Capture One, i wouldn't even bother using the AI masking... since the tree is such a different color than everything else... creating an exact 1:1 mask of only the tree would have taken a moment, and not even needed any of these newer "AI" features... i reviewers and even users often overlook this, I'm curious if any other tools offer a similar masking feature.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Thanks for the feedback. I agree the example could have been better. The distinct color would have been best masked with the luminosity masking tool which all...Capture One, ON1 and luminar Neo do have. I should have picked a complex subject WITHOUT the distinct. Capture One is the only one I know which creates a mask from a color range which probably might even be better fo this case. The rest only have the luminosity masking tool.

    If you compare just one feature Capture One is over priced; but when you compare the whole package, not so much. Capture One is my main editor and so far nothing beats it for culling through 1500+ shots from an agility trail, bulk editing, colour management etc. I do keep ON1, Luminar and Afinity around for some specialized features. Not sure how long I'm going to keep Luminar current as for my use case it's falling behind (I've thought this in the past with ON1 and Luminar then they update it and I decide to keep it for a bit more...... LOL ).
    We do have some good choices out there; Capture One just suits me and my work flow so much better than the others.

    • @takebetterphotos8132
      @takebetterphotos8132  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thanks for your feedback. I do see where you are coming from. I did purchase Capture one too! I guess one way to look at it is 300 dollars is in reality small when you consider the top notch image quality out of the box and when comparing the cost of your equipment and travel! I did the review though from the point of view of a hobbyist who might not be willing to spend too much but just wants quality features! I thought ON1 fills that criteria the best! Luminar I think will always have its niche in its HDR merging. Other than that on1 has taken the lead in every thing else.
