PIXELMATOR PRO: HOW TO USE THE COLOR BLEND MODE TO ENHANCE PHOTOS (5 WAYS)
I have been using Dxo Photolab for a while now. They are probably the best regarding the optical corrections fit for both the camera and lens, outstanding noise reduction, and local masking. I completed the basic version with DXO Viewpoint, which works very well with perspective (I wish they could add the perspective correction tool developed for Darktable). I'm testing the new v.7 version. It's a little bit slower (I have a Mac Mini M1 with 16Gb RAM), so I recommend testing it before buying to check if your computer can handle it. I do think that the new full menu associated with the local masking is a drastic improvement compared with the small widget they had. My minus remark: The software is complete regarding options only if you buy DXO Filmpack. Should people buy it? It's one of the best applications outside the Adobe universe. I combine it with Luminar Neo, which offers wonderful user-friendly improvements. I recommend testing it (one month of free testing!) and spending some time via tutorials to learn how to make it work. Should people update from version 6? I'm definitively thinking about it because of the revised mask tool, but I know I have to invest in the DXO FIlmpack as well to avoid frustration. To complete my short feedback, I also have the NIK Collection, and its B&W filter has become my best friend for fast and impressive B&W conversion that suits my wishes.
Very good review indeed. Perceptive and clearly presented. Thank you for it.
Yes! Your analysis is correct! Affinity has made a bad job with Photo. Designer is a success, together with Publisher. When I edit raw files, I stick to the very wonderful Adobe Lightroom Classic, the desktop version! , not the simpler version (not called ’classic’) which is for mobile jobs. The latest, 2024 version, is formidable! I use Pixelmator Pro in combination with Affinity Designer and Photo and, of course, Adobe Photoshop!
PLEASE... Can you review NITRO for iPad... I was amazed.. thanks ❤

Doing such a good job ... sure you shouldn't "sell" as Pixelmator masterclass? A - Z and updated alongside the software?

@takebetterphotos8132 Thank you, that's alot better.
I may be a bit of a one-off, but of the 3 cameras I have Apple Raw (and hence Photomator) only supports 1 and doesn't support compressed raw from any of them - Nitro supports all and in compressed raw. Don't get me wrong I think Photomator is a great product as far as it goes, but its total reliance on Apple Raw means even though I own a full licence, it currently is very limited for me. Where Nitro shines is its integration with both File Browser and Photos, meaning I can if I want upload images from my Apple unsupported cameras into Photos and Nitro will be able to view them through Photos, although personally I use Nitro with the file system option as that way it does provide a good enough asset management tool as well. Also integrates with other apps such as Affinity
Thanks for the feedback. Definitely Nitro deserves praise for supporting more cameras. I believe others have mentioned as much Really amazing one guy can provide more camera support than Apple! Is it that your cameras are newly released that Apple hasnt supported it yet?

Your presentations always provide perfect clarity. Excellent job!!!
Glad to hear this!
Hi, have you noticed that radiant photo or perfectly clear photos produce very low quality images, meaning the edits are great but when you zoom into the photo the pixel quality is so low and poor, almost like it’s filled with noise, color noise, and very low pixel information. Have you noticed that or is it just me?
I have not noticed this actually. Have you compared to other photo editors? Is it unique to Radiant?
@@takebetterphotos8132 yes I have, it’s unique in radiant. I also tried it in workbench and perfectly clear before and it’s the same result. Also tried it on two different macs and it’s still the same
@@takebetterphotos8132 yes, and it’s the same results
Ok I would need to test it. The issue can be seen at what zoom level in your experience?
@@takebetterphotos8132 Yes, and sometimes I don’t need to zoom in to see the difference
Thanks for part 1 and part 2. The videos are great, and just what I needed to kick-off with Affinity. 👍
Glad to hear this was helpful. I will be making another Affinity basics video soon. It's been a while.
I had used Affinity Photo for a few years and use Pixelmaster Pro now for a simple reason: With Pixelmaster I get good results more quickly than with Affinity photo. Especially the ML-function helps a lot.
Does Macro work in Affinity Photo 2 for IPad?
iPad doesn't have macro as far as I'm aware
@@takebetterphotos8132 You’re correct. It’s too bad. Would have saved users a lot of time.
I think apple would prevent this functionality for security and performance reasons unfortunately
Great video! Very helpful!
Nice it hear that it helps someone!
Great video
Glad you enjoyed it
it is good but too much expensive! photo lab plus film pack plus view point 300 euro and a payment update every year and no works with layer. for 11 euro monthly 132 yearly you have Lightroom plus photoshop every possible masking perspective collection works with layer update and cost the half of dox
thanks a lot
You are most welcome
That was a nice job
glad it was helpful!
This is awesome. I've been looking for this for some time now. Also, thanks to the people in the comments, I was able to fix the issue when moving back to the develop persona.
yes didn't know affinity had this. Glad it was useful!
Thank you so much
You're most welcome
Seems like more work to do by the Pixelmator team.
Its never ending for sure
I love this update. So many possibilities for compositing 🔥
Yes much simpler now and haven't seen a vector mask in other tools. Not sure if it is their own idea
Very good tutorial
Glad it was helpful
Or you could just go into PS, then back to PL7.
If you use PS then perhaps PL7 would be redundant as it has better masking
great job
thanks!
It is also in NIK collection 7 which is more useful for some people
Yes for jpeg shooters Nik 7 would be great. Too bad it doesn't edit RAW 😊
@@takebetterphotos8132 If you are transferring to NIK you have already developed the raw photo and are using 16 bit tiff from which there has been virtually no loss. If you are dealing with a high ISO photo in LR you really have to use PL7 or Pureraw as LR cant handle high ISO noise and the returned file is no longer raw but a processed raw file being returned as a DNG file. Nothings perfect.
Thanks for sharing your workflow. I suppose that is why it is advertised as a plugin from lightroom or photoshop. What tool do you find the most useful in Nik that is not available/weaker in Photolab 7?
@@takebetterphotos8132 I use colour efex pro quite a lot and originally got it because PL did not have transform for fixing perspective. I don't like that some of the important items in PL are separated out into separate apps you have to pay for if you want them and they have done this again with their luminosity mask which is in filmpack but not PL7 you can do a full raw edit if you have film pack and the masking is now very effective. Both LR and PS could not easily mask a bird photo the other day and I had to do it in Affinity Photo. I understand PS can now mask fine hair more accurately now but it could not a year ago and kept removing fine hairs around the eyes of an owl but Affinity did is straight away with it's flood select. I often do cutouts and move things around but that is easier in PS or Affinity photo.
Yes if you do cutouts than no choice but PS or Affinity. Interesting you find that flood select works better than PS. I always thought when I tested PS object selection and fine hair masking was the best as it is able to do it in practically one click. But sounds like you have all the tools you need!
Thanks for the review of this feature. I downloaded Filmpack 7 to test and the luminosity mask is the only feature I am interested in. Like your summation, I am not $139 interested. I agree this should be included in Photo Lab.
A commenter mentioned luminosity mask is now in Nik 7. If that's the case it should be coming in Photolab 8
Good video. I currently own Film Pack 6 which I use with Photo Lab 7, and rarely use Film Pack. However, I recently researched the new version of the NiK Collection 7, and considering all of the included upgraded features as well as it's Luminosity tool, if you already have NiK Collection, it is worth the upgrade cost of $89.00. Although NiK Collection doesn't support RAW files, it does support TIFF, which is the next best option for me. I use it as well as Topaz Denoise and Sharpen as a plugin in Affinity Photo. A good powerhouse setup for my editing without the cost of a subscription. Thanks for sharing 👍.
Sounds like Nik Collection suitable for you since you don't need RAW. I believe though luminosity masking will be coming to Photolab 8 so maybe wait for that 😊 Should be arriving around October
@@takebetterphotos8132 How much do you think the PL8 upgrade will be, will it be as much or less than $89 for NiK?
it typically will cost around $109 to upgrade
NIK 7 is now offering luminosity masking, but not to the RAW file. However do you think this could be an alternative , though not cheap, solution. Alternatively as it is now in NIK 7 it may be coming to PL8. Decisions, decisions😊
Well if you don't shoot in RAW and find NIK useful I think would be a good alternative. I do need the RAW capability so can't use NIK then. Yes, since it is in NIK 7 I think it might be coming to PL8. It is about time! I prefer they prioritize AI masking though😊
For real estate images I tried using Luminosity mask but its almost useless, there is no way to feather a hard mask except the move bottom sliders but then that makes it select unwanted areas which then have to manually erase, there is no way to manually tell which area of window to select luminosity mask. Conventional tool U point works better & faster.
Yes that was the biggest flaw of luminosity mask, you need to manually erase. So as you say if the area of brightness is not very distinct and spills over there is way to correct it easily. They should have integrated this with at least U-point or automasking.
This stupid and greedy move by DXO to "ring fence" features by forcing you to pay more for features that clearly have nothing to do with "Film" or film looks has halted all my purchases from the company. I am still on Photolab 6 and have not even considered the new Nik upgrade either. It's pure greed on the part of DXO.
Fun, fun, video to watch. Thank you for this knowledge. I personally own Filmpack 7, and I buy all my photography software on Black Friday to save some decent money 💰 🤑 💸
Thanks for the positive review! You bought filmpack for filmpack or the luminosity mask? Yes Black Friday is the best I do wait for that as well 😀
There is no background chNNELS?!
Hi hope you can help. I use DXO but it does not have photo stacking. Are there any free ones . Or would it be best just to get infinity for this ?? Hope you can help.
I would recommend just get affinity. Not aware of any photostacking which does image alignment like affinity
Thank you.

@@takebetterphotos8132 it looks good but I am not working much on masks. I wait for a tutorial about it. 😀 The notes show it was a big project
Is this a raw or jpg image?
it is jpg
@@takebetterphotos8132 Is it the same process with a raw photo? Any differences? Your videos are very helpful. Thanks!
It is exactly the same. Pixelmator Pro layers handle RAW too
Good video, BUT, you missed hitting a home run. What you should have said was, first use Pixelmator pro, background removal, then transfer the work to affinity photo for final tuning using a variety of methods to extract the strands :)
haha ok! That might work but confuse a lot of people though!
This is often referred to as exposure blending. Affinity passed Photoshop in the ease of implementation with their luminosity range masks.
Yes it is also called exposure blending. Strange that lightroom has luminosity masks but not photoshop.
