I was in the same situation where my transmission was shot and financed another car because I was too scared to go from a 10k emergency to potentially losing it all in a money pit. It’s a 12 year old car and I still have it. I felt so stupid when I did that. I was scared I was going to lose my job to layoffs due to Coronavirus so I acted straight out of fear. Following the baby steps sure takes developing a spine and mental fortitude.
Thought the dude financed a car made of solid gold, he's just sweating bullets over a $10,000 car.
If he’s pounding his head over a $10k car loan, that means he’s got income issues that need his attention more than a car.
Sounds like it was maybe a 15-17k car because he used his emergency fund and financed the rest.
$1000 car will break. $10,000 car will break. $100,000 car will break. And no one really knows for sure when.

You always hear ppl sayin "No!!! Used car is not safe!". Well, those are the exact same ppl wrecking their cars on highways and even parking lot. It's not the cars are not safe, THEY are not safe. Also not to mention, when they bought their "safe" new car and drove for 1 year, it's now formally become a used car, is it not safe?

That’s right 100%. All cars break. Some cars break faster then others and honestly that’s why I look into cars that don’t break as often. Look at more reliable cars .

there are plenty of decent toyota’s and honda’s out there for $5,000 or less. if you buy a $5,000 and it only lasts you 3 years, you made your money. a lease at $300 / month over 3 years would have been $10,800 in the trash.. not to mention the higher insurance costs. Most likely after 3 years, the $5,000 car will still be running & you could sell it for $1,000-$3,000, making it an even better purchase! There’s a toyota camry near me for $4,000 with 109,000 miles! it looks mint too. that car still likely has more than double it’s life left!
Toyota for 5000 is extremely rare. Most have 500k miles and had a good run. Decent toyotas are 10k-15k even with low miles

All he can do is try to not make the same mistake again. Plenty of kids out of college end up buying more than a 10k car and don't realize till way later the mistake they made
I bought my car 10,500. 2014 mustang and paid ir off in 2 years. 10k for financing a car isn't the worst imo but should still be avoided if possible

Just depends on your income and the car price. if you make 40k out of college and buy a 20k car on loan that's bad. this guy buying a 10k car to get his family back to his job is totally fine. better than buying two 5k cars that break down back to back. our household income is around 100k and we got a 15k Chevy Malibu on a 4 year loan and only ended up financing 12k. the loan is under 10k now within a year of regular payments and soon we will have the whole thing paid off. it's about perspective. sometimes the 2k in interest you end up paying is worth the reliable car, the factory warranty, etc. just make sure not to just think of yourself as an idiot for buying a car on a good deal with a small loan to keep making the money for your family

I bought a 1999 toyota Avalon at the public auction for $550 with 289k miles one year and a half ago and the white goose is still driving strong and if it breaks down I'll be back at the auction again. Got love those beaters

2007 Kia. There's your mistake. If you're gonna buy an old car, buy a Toyota or Honda. Often times the car will rust beyond being safe before the engine or transmission goes.
Sounds like my 2000 Toyota Camry! She runs like a dream but has some rust & hail damage.
It's crazy how people are still blind about this issue. I bought my first car at 18 for $1500 and another one this year at 20 for $4000. A 2007 Suzuki and a 2012 Nissan Sentra. And they both run good with no issue. I always tell my friends to pay cash for their cars and I'll never make payments on a car (unless I'm really really rich and bored with no debts)
Well said man. I have friends that won't listen either, they go into debt $20K for a new car because they couldn't afford a $400 fix and they justify it like "I'm building my credit". Building your credit for $20K debt and 10%+ interest on top is not worth it. I was surprised I hit 800 credit score with one credit card that I pay off every month and have yet to ever spend a penny in interest. Not everyone is fortunate enough but people impulse buy the 2nd biggest purchases they'll ever make.
I pay $75 a month to insure my 1999 subaru that I've owned for 5 years whilst my friends bought newer suvs where they pay $275-$300/mo. That's $200 more per month, in 3 years that extra insurance cost pays for my whole car.
@@shaloon64 this is why you won't even find 5 cars that you can buy cash when you go to a dealership. It's always the financing option because they know that's how they grab our money.

Buy a Japanese car. Affordable and the MOST reliable. My 2003 Camry looks amazing and I paid cash for it and it has not given me a single problem💯

It would be frustrating to be that close to paying off all your debt and then have this happen, but if he’s worked hard to pay off all his other debt up to this point, I’d be willing to bet he can get this cleaned up rather quickly. Never a fun thing, but discipline equals freedom.

I have never paid more than 5k for a car for over 20 years (five different cars by the way). Going to try the total money makeover. Seems like it's going to be pretty easy to do this part of it.

Most I've spent is $4,000 cash, then $3500 & then $3000..
All with cash. Now I'm saving up for my future car 👍

@@ludens1526 you are lucky then. I bought cheap 3000 car twice, even got it checked out by mechanic before purchasing. Still I was spending about $400 a month to keep it going.
It was only 10k. He'll be fine. It probably would have costed upward of that to rebuild the engine in the old one. Like they said, just sell it soon as you find a cheaper one.

A weekend in the driveway with a mechanical buddy and you can swap the motor. Provided the rest of the car was in decent shape its worth it.

I drove so many hoopties in my teens and 20’s. I rationed my mileage only for bare necessities. When I finally bought a brand new car I was crying because I finally didn’t have to watch the gauges and listen for impending doom.
I’ve been there too, was in a car accident and felt so rushed since my ins co wouldn’t pay for my rental for more then 3 days & I had the worst experience with the dealer.

all cars have repair costs, and one of the most expensive repairs are to replace and change over tires.. People get stuck in the fallacy that somehow a more expensive new car won't require maintenance, but thats false. Thats why I have put almost $1000 in maintenance into my $1500 car, but at least I didn't buy a $25,000 car that would now be worth $10,000 absolute max and still paying for it
If you buy used, always check the consumer report on reliability of that car. Second, take the VIN# to dealership and check If previous owner did regular maintenance on car. Otherwise, not worth it. Third, get a carfax report. Forth, mechanic inspection. Finally, more homework you do, less pain later!
If you break a timing belt in a Kia, the engine is destroyed. Not replacing the timing belt on a conservative schedule is very risky.

@Marc Archibald I'm not ignorant or stupid. KIAs are one of the worst interference engine brands. A Toyota will be repairable with usually a head job. In fact, just a few valve stems. A Honda will, too. KIAs, Hyundais, and BMWs end up needing complete engine rebuilds. KIAs are a common cheap used car that bite a lot of budget conscious vehicle owners.

It’s sad but sometimes people don’t have choices and do what they have to do. Living in so cal you absolutely need a car work can be 30-50 miles away, no public transportation headed in that direction. No money =Desperate decisions. Much love 💕
This is why you need an emergency fund greater than 1K.
The $1K Dave touts in baby step 1 isn't about having enough to pay for every short term emergency. Its about getting you in the saving mindset needed to do baby steps 2 & 3. $1K is a nice round number that will challenge most folks. If you can't save that, you can't save money for paying down debt or a full emergency fund. Once again, the idea is centered on behavior, not math.

Oil is cheap, engines are expensive. You can replace whichever you want.
Perfect example as to why 1000 isn't enough anymore. One months expenses, plus insurance deductibles. 1000 isn't nearly enough to bet the foundation of your financial stability and future on.
True to an extent, it’s more attainable than 2-3k. Some people might get discouraged trying to save that much when they already can’t save. It’s all in the minder. If you can’t save 1k then your for sure can’t save 2-3k.

We make too many excuses just to have payments. I was there at once... never again.
Personally buying a car is something I wouldn’t skimp on. Since it transports my family I want to make sure I get a reliable vehicle for peace of mind and longevity. If you have good credit then you should be able to get a good rate.
I agree with first two sentences. Finally some common sense. My safety is worth more than money and I'll buy the most secure car I can buy.
The Cat Next Door yes, I meant in terms of he had to finance $10k, if I didn’t have the $10k or if I wanted to keep it liquid then I would finance if the rate were low, it would be worth it to me for the reliability. My rate when I got my Honda was 0.9% so my interest was less than $5 month.

I bought a 2020 corolla hybrid and I feel like a winner . Not a loser . It’s a good car good mpg it’s worth every penny it makes me lots of money . I can see my self paying off in 3 years but I’m really living life and paying bills

You could sell the car and add a few thousand to that to go up in the car world. But if you love the old car. Don't. Fight the urge. You can do it
You can find late 96-2005 Buicks with a 3800 Series II for CHEAP, and they are fantastic and comfortable cars for under $3000, and most of the time they have 140k miles or LESS. Hondas and Toyotas in that price range usually have over 200k miles and they're nowhere as comfortable.

I went to my bank to get a loan for $5,000.00 and ended up with a ten thousand loan to get a nice Nissan Altima from a car lot that my bank owned. Still have the car and five years later, it still is a great car. So the payments were worth it. I just had to throw all my extra money to getting it paid off asap. Getting it through my bank had provided me with a low interest rate.

Nobody has the right to own a car that they don't have the tools and ability to fix (and, yes, you do have the time for it). This is why people feel they NEED a $10,000 car. It is entitlement.
Dave drives anything he wants because he was smart enough yo create a powerhouse of a business. It has nothing to do with him driving junk.
Yes, but not being in debt helps long term. You have way more options. Driving junk cars is way better than financing something you can't afford

No - fear did not cause him to fall off the wagon. His lack of a sufficient emergency fund meant that he financed a car in order to get to work to make the money that's allowing him to pay off debt. The $1,000 emergency fund is absolutely better than nothing (and it's more than a lot of people have saved up), and this advice works a majority of the time. But when it doesn't work, you get situations like this and it's one of the legitimate criticisms of the Ramsey method.
While he's evaluating what his "beliefs" are about money, maybe he should be asking himself if he believes Dave Ramsey's method is perfect. If so, then he'll either pay the car down as fast as possible or sell it. If not, maybe the baby steps written in stone aren't for him and he'd be better off saving up a slightly more robust emergency fund. This is why personal finance is just that - personal.

"Do you know what I drive now? Anything I want!" Me too, but I try to be clever about it. Did you know that mechanical parts are identical and interchangeable among these pairs: Lexus-Toyota, Infinity-Nissan, Audi-VW, and possibly others too. When we owned part of an auto shop we'd have the service writer ask the customer whether he wanted the Lexus part or the identical Toyota part made right in the same plant but with "Toyota" on it instead of "Lexus"; but if he wanted stay pure Lexus we'd do it for him. And in Germany, the Mercedes brand is just an ordinary car--maybe BMW too but I don't know about that. If you want be impressive, buy the expensive one. If you just want drive a great car, buy the other one for thousands or maybe tens of thousands less.

Had a friend who would buy Honda oil filters for his Acura. Same part, much cheaper.
The whole "Get a mechanic to check it out" phrase doenst really work. Mechanics arent taking apart the engine to see if valves and cylinders are in decent shape. They just look to make sure it has fluids, isnt leaking, and has some spark plugs in place. Which is something anyone can do themselves. You dont know the shape of a car until it blows up one day or doesnt.
Im glad this finally came up lol! Dave is always like "go get you a 1000$ car!" Like yea some people get lucky and buy a good car from a private seller for cheap and its a decent ride but in reality most 1000 dollar cars are not reliable transportation and will likely leave you stranded with a tow and repair bill!

Just pay it off as soon as you can. Sometimes you just have to do whatever you have to do to get out. It’s always good to take a step back to breathe and look things over before committing to money matters or long term decisions. Just take caution to the hole you dig yourself in and don’t dig it deep.
The bread and butter is finding a compact car 2 years old for about $9,000 ish. Not a truck or SUV. I actually pull my dirt bike with a mini trailer with my Ford Fiesta like in Europe. Lol
I started over like five times from bad relationships I am in the best spot in my life now then I have ever been
Paid 3900 for 04 my Corolla in 2016. Car is amazing. All I changed was a few sensors which my dad did half of them himself. Thing runs like a champ. Price has nothing to do with it. For that money, they could have gotten a car each.

@@bettysmith7045 I gu.ess some people believe that debt is always an option. I am not one of them. I am old enough to remember a time when there was no such thing as credit. We paid cash for everything except a mortgage ( min. 25% down, 15 years, pmts did not exceed 30% of out monthly take home). Dave R and many,MANY like him are millionaires from coaching people to not do what you advice. Any time you need to borrow an alarm bell should go off that you are living beneath your means. So spend less and/or make more. How will he and others like him get to saving for retirement and building wealth. Americans are just so in debt that to them what s 10k better than 30k. Yikes! debt is always a bad idea but what do you do when you've used your emergency fund and have absolutely no money and you need a car to work the best thing to do is pay it off as fast as you can and then you'll have a good car that you can use for a long time I understand and Dave's philosophy of pay cash but not everyone's a millionaire like Dave and yes staying out of debt can lead to making you a millionaire but when you're down and poor it's not that easy sometimes unfortunately sometimes debt is a necessary evil should be avoided at all costs though
I have been struggling with this for a long time. All my friends have car loans. My current car is paid off but I don't feel good about my car despite knowing its the right choice.

Having had cheap cars that Dave recommends all the time, I can say they do break down. To compare it to lightening striking the same place twice is patronizing insulting, and nonsensical. His fear was realistic. It had just happened once, and it could happen again.

I tell everybody the same thing, if you desperately need a car buy a $3,000 2000 Camry 4cylinder, those things are unkillable if you change the oil regularly

Look up some videos on what to look for when buying a second hand car and write the points down on a piece of paper you can pull out of your pocket when you go to look at cars.

I didn't buy the kia for 10k. I bought the kia for 2k and the engine blew 6 months later. I was thinking about getting a Toyota for 5k but those already had 100k miles on it and my wife and I want a car for at least 200k more
