    Just found your video searching today. I purchased a head/bust of Hercules that I want to hang over my garage of my house. The whole back of the head is hollowed out. Since it will be outside year round, I don't want bees making a home in there. The other thing it being outside in the open, I want to be able to secure it to the wall because of strong coastal winds here in Florida. This looks like the right thing to do to fill it but what do I paint it with and I'm thinking of putting a blob of silicone on the back to secure it to the concrete wall. Please give me some of your ideas. The head is 16" long by 9" wide and it stands 6" off the wall. I wish I could send you a picture of it. I'm looking forward to hearing from you. Thanks so much. Ray Kasza

      Ya if your going to place outside, I would fill with foam and try and pack best ya can, then if you can seal it with a plank of wood then you can create a way to hook it up somewhere,.

    thanks for the video. I thought filling with foam was little risky as foam expands very quick and can break the statue if it doesnt find the way out very fast

    Just finished casting a sculpture that had multiple holes and seams from shim lines and some of it is just quite thin in areas so I wanted to do this and found your video! Can I put something in the holes on the outside that won’t stick to it then fill the inside, remove what I put in hole then fill holes with aqua resin to then sand and smooth out? What doesn it not stick to? Could I put Vaseline on clay and it will release it?

    you can buy 2 part resin in 32 ounces, but its like $36, will need 64 ounces to fill him and thats a added $80 with shipping or so. Vs a $6 can of foam, plus this is for someone and foam is fine for them.

    wouldn't matter its not much of a weight difference with foam, just helps give the illusion when you knock on it that its solid, cause hollow you get that hollow sound.

    If u took the shell of would the foam retain its shape

    nice video Vince, back in the day I would do helmet pours for new pilots...the liners are hollow and we do a mixture of chems and pour them in. Now I see it comes in a can...for helmets they use memory foam or bubble wrap. My question is where did you get the statues? Might sound strange, but I told my wife ...when I pass to cremate the body and put it into a 12ft Iron Man stat...lol

      Statues are all over, ebay, comic stores, statue companies etc.. LOL funny thing is there is life size Iron Man statues, fine one and you got a coffin! But a hollow small IM statue works as well. 8)

    I'm curious how would you fill a statue with resin. I'm getting a rhino comiquette soon and I hear the walls are very thin on it. I don't want to completely fill it up but I'd like to add some weight to the walls to give it added strength then possibly fill the rest with foam.

    How much will something like this weigh?

    • @VinceVellCUSTOMS
      @VinceVellCUSTOMS  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Doesn't weigh much at all, the foam is super light, But since i went to the jerseyfest show in 2018 i sat in on a seminar with Smooth-on that makes resins etc. They have a foam product that fills hollow statues better then this stuff from home depot that i plan to get down the line and make a video on. The smooth on product it light weight as well and make the item even more solid then the stuff at home depot.

    I wanted to ask, how would you recommend filling out a hollow life size bust? I can make a discreet hole, but what can I safely fill it with that will add a lot more weight to it? foam just wont do it for me. Please let me know

    • @VinceVellCUSTOMS
      @VinceVellCUSTOMS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      if you wanted to add more weight and don't mind spending the cash, you can buy 2 part resin from Smooth On. They got a few graded, you an mix it up pour it into the statue and rotocast it. meaning you pour it in and turn the statue and let the resin coat the insides of the statue. The resin gets hot as it cures but if you keep doing this you can thicken up the statue for more weight without making it super solid.
      I did a video on making generic bases, you can see how resin work in there. Then try looking up Roto Casting for video on it, and even contact Smooth On web site or even cal for more info. They help people out a lot on their site with their products. Thats prob the best way to make it heavier and make the item thicker as well. I mean you could just pour resin in non stop till its one solid piece but a life size but prob all end up costing a ton of cash to keep buying resin to fill i in.

      VinceVellCUSTOMS thanks for the reply! That definitely helps. Is there a cheaper method? I was hoping to drill a hole, pour something in and just let it dry and hopefully not cost much. Any suggestions for that?

    • @VinceVellCUSTOMS
      @VinceVellCUSTOMS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      i don't know many other stuff to pour in and will help. I would contact Smooth On and ask them if they have a thicker foam, or material thats not as expensive to fill up the item. All i know is Foam from the can at hardware stores. Resin or that Plumbe Putty you can get at hardware stores. i did a video on that putty but that stuff needs air to cure when mixed with water so would have to do a tiny bit at a time with it. Which will be annoying.

      VinceVellCUSTOMS ah thanks for all the advice :) can I ask a final question. Did the foam you added to the thanos statue increase the weight at all? Roughly by how much?

    • @VinceVellCUSTOMS
      @VinceVellCUSTOMS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Didn't give it much more weight it just helps from expending and contracting in case it gets cold and hot in the long term from paint cracking. Plus gives the sense its not as hollow. This is more or less what i learned from guys in the garage kit hobby.

    try to put some water in the figure and pour it out then , the water helps the foam harden out, because its a one part foam it needs the humidity to harden out, once the hole where you put the foam in hardens, the rest of the foam in the figure wont harden as it should. maybe you just figured this out when i start thinking how old this video is.

      Good to know, but so far any of the items i have done this too hasn't been a issue. i think if anything the bottom of the item the foam sorta filled up to a crystal like resin. But that was on a super large item that i had to dremel into the bottom when added a key after i filed it with foam.

    How about cheap plaster?

    • @VinceVellCUSTOMS
      @VinceVellCUSTOMS  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      its possible but i wouldn't want to fill a inclosed item with a water based plaster and it never really cure in the deep areas of the statue and possible leak. Cause i have dremeled into statues in the past that have done this and when you hit that plaster it comes out like toothpaste. Foam is the best option for super large items, but smaller hollow items prob just resin to cure solid in them is the best way.

    check out my video on how to make a generic base. you can pick up a two part resin, pour it into the hollow statue. This resin cures in like 3min, so you have to work quick. You poor it in, rotate it so it doesnt drip out of the hole you poured it into, and that will make the walls of the hollow resin thicker and add more weight. Then once they are thick enough fill with foam. Just be careful two part resins get super hot to the touch. i buy mine from specialtyresin web site called Model-Pro

    TERRIBLE advise. Never put EXPANDING foam in a hollow statue, unless you want it to break apart.

  • @jereownby5116
    @jereownby5116 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why do you want to do this?

    • @VinceVellCUSTOMS
      @VinceVellCUSTOMS  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Well i learned from a lot of the guys in the garage kit hobby that thin hollow statues will cause cracking issues over time with hot and cold weather if they are subjected to it. I had a hollow garage kit head bust while back and never filled it with foam, after a year on my shelf i saw all the paint cracking. When i asked some guys int he hobby they told me i was supposed to fill it with foam before i painted etc.
      So hollow stuff is ok if its thick enough, but when hollow items are close to being egg shell thin it can cause issues.
