I loved FC6 best one of the lost. I really cared for the people in the world. The main story is super short. The game has a heap of things to do that are not the main story or even story driven but drive the story. Let me explain: There are these pick up crates all over the place. Just trying to find some of them lead me on adventures with much deeper stories than the main story of the game I felt. i loved looking around more than I enjoyed the main story. I got 100% of the achievements (PC) and played the game for 91 hours in all. I got mad FC1 and FC3 feels also. Just like you. Thanks for the review.
p.s FC5 sucked but NEW Dawn was awesome!

When I first saw a trailer showing the dictator giving his son a grenade to throw at the protestor's. I thought that the player character would be the son realizing that his father needs to be stopped, joining the rebels, becoming disillusioned, Learning they'll likely become just as bad in the long run all while trying to find a middle ground and win without blowing the nations infrastructure half to hell. while also not becoming a figure head/political pawn foe the rebels...pretty much what far cry 4 tried to do

That's what I thought as well. Hell, it's probably what MOST people thought. That would've been a fascinating storyline, and the ending (killing your own father) could've been incredibly deep. The route they chose to take instead is pretty much the worst one possible. The "father and son" dynamic has literally no bearing on YOUR experience as Dani, because you don't know his son, his son doesn't know you, and therefore his feelings/motives are meaningless. Whether he approves of his father or not... who cares? Why is there even a focus on that? If that character isn't going to be player-controlled OR interact with/impact the player in some way, it's pointless fluff. It has to be up there as one of the worst stories/setups of any Far Cry game to date, and just a massive missed opportunity.

i played far cry 4 5 times and Far Cry 4 didn't even do any of that and the fact 6 didn't do it is even more lame. Ajay gave no %&$% about Kyrat or Pagan, only his mom, damn momma's boy, but Dani is ten times WORSE and i'm like "how is that even possible to be worser then a blank slate?" but Dani pulled it off by one moment being cool with killing people while in the next scene being traumatized that some rando got shot in the head. Yup that consistency right there. God even though Jason is whiny, at least he felt believable, I MISS Jason and I hate myself so much for saying this.

Get the fuck out of dodge before the nutcase stabs me too
      Or
Stay here and hope that by doing exactly what the nutcase says, I get to live.
Both of those choices are fueled by rational self preservation and the decision can be argued either way. In case A it’s “what if you get caught on your way out” and in case B it’s “what if he decides to kill you for accidentally using the wrong fork or some other loony crap.”
It’s a choice that feels like a choice. The point I’m making is that both those choices indicate a character who just wants to get out of this alive.

Having been through 2/3 of the game, I can firmly say FC6's writers are indeed very diverse, also very lack of communication. One minute main character Dani was shouting FUCK YEAH as she was asked about going shoot a billion guys, the next minute she's on a beach, shocked at someone else put a bullet in the skull of a guy on front. It's like different writer has different plans for the main character and all plans are welcome, Hallelujah.

People were only upset that he gets killed so quickly in the first half of the game. But man did he steal EVERY scene on screen. And that's the thing. Far Cry 3 did the same thing as Far Cry 6, but BETTER. So of course this one feels like a cheap knock off of 3.

@@igorpolyakov4113 Granted, Vaas was Michael Mando's big breakout role, so it's unlikely that any significant portion of the budget went to him.
tldr even if you consider Vaas a full acting role due to the mocap work & ad campaign instead of just a VA role, small actors only make 40-50k per year. By comparison, Giancarlo Esposito charges 65k /per episode/ of Better Call Saul, and it's likely that Ubi had to pay him the equivalent of a quarter- or half-season's worth of episodes (6-13 eps) for his role in FC6, which would put his charge at around 500k vs the 25k or so Mando probably made.

I always joking called it GTA Africa because in the end, that's how it felt especially after being such a dramatic change from FC1 which I loved.
FC3 they definitely hit the nail on the head with Vaas and all the marketing leading up to release, but since then every single villain has been one note trying to capture that same character... And it doesn't work because they never flesh them out or actually make them an intimidating threat.
Pagan Min I liked because he had a sense of elegance to him, but after the intro he disappears and occasionally phones you for a quick chat and a biscuit, it's so disappointing.
Lastly, I agree with what Yahtzee says about FC3 where Jason as a character goes through an arc and you become invested in his story more than that of saving your friends or fighting Vaas / Hoyt, where else FC4, 5 (I guess 6 but I haven't played and dont intend to) have no character, 5 literally has no character, just a blank piece of paper who never talks but isn't a part of the world like a mute character like Gordon Freeman is, so you have no attachment.

I often think about the stories of Far Cry 2 and 3.
While light on characters, The civil war in Far Cry 2's setting was the main character. You could never escape it, every aspect of the world is effected by it, and this fatalistic theme that nothing you can do can actually end it. The best you could do was try to not die of malaria and get a few people out of the conflict.
Far Cry 3's story worked for the most part because the characters and themes were inescapable. Your tattoos being a skill tree really reinforced the power Jason felt from killing. You saw how the island changed and that Jason's transformation was unique because it seemed like it could only have happened on that specific island. And Vass worked effectively because you at least encountered him face to face a bunch within the first half of the game.

Ah, but Jason is also an unreliable narrator, so an equally canonical interpretation is that he and his friends got borked off their balls on preppy drug du jour and he imagined the whole thing while splayed out on a private beach someplace, apart from a brief moment when a half-russian half-hispanic pool boy called Vaas (which was short for Vasily) who has a hispanic accent from the parent who raised him, tried to talk to him for a while... but Jason got confused in his drug haze, assaulted and murdered him. And basically everything in the game is just his mind building a scenario in which he is anything more than a rich little shit who killed a guy in the middle of a voluntarily induced coked-up stupor.

2:20 so I actually did take the boat and, after the obligatory joke ending cutscene of your character chilling on a beach with a beer, it sends you back to the main menu and when you press continue it puts you right back to when they give you the boat, so basically no time lost.

Ironically I wish it was more like far cry 3 or 4. This one didn't feel like a far enough cry, if that makes sense. Like, dani is just going around the civilized island nation she lives on and it's not exactly first world but it's still fairly modern compared to tribal island cult with magic tattoos. So the whole time Dani is just like "yep, killin some dudes, no big deal". I really liked in far cry 3 that it WAS a big deal at first. The series to me is about a normal ish dude in a place far from his normal life transforming from normal dude to killing machine as the reasons for the violence slowly become less and less relevant to your character. It makes the whole thing feel exotic.
Now it's somehow goofier and more grounded at the same time and it's for the worse. Still, I enjoy the far cry gameplay formula and it's mostly fine in 6. The guns shoot well, the enemies have solid variety, stealth functions well enough, theres plenty of bizarre ways to kill people if you feel like it. Hunting was pretty weak compared to previous entries. Some sections feel very annoying for all the wrong reasons. Like times where the challenge was more jank than intended design. Also fuck whoever made the hovercraft race, that thing does not turn, it's awful.
The story is fine I guess although they still kept in the very annoying fucking tradition of having your character auto lose and get captured and tortured and escape. Like, stop doing that dammit. If you want this to be a power fantasy where I 1 man army my way through hordes of dudes and tanks and helicopters with a jacked up rooster or a ghost cat then don't make me lose where I have no control over things.

Honestly I’m not sure why the far cry series hasn’t done a game where you work for the bad guy instead of trying to bring them down. You’d get to see the fight from the other side and it would certainly highlight the morally grey aspects of the situation where the dictator could be seen as a necessary evil that keeps order at the cost of innocent lives; something that 4 didn’t do nearly enough of.
Wouldn’t that be a nuanced concept?

With Min it was somewhat easy to believe there was more to him then being a brutal dictator which made the secret revelations about him easier to swallow. Castillo meanwhile it'll be harder to sympathize with him if that ends up being the case. Here's an idea if they want to make a far cry game interesting terms of story. Why not make the player the villain? Far cry is a series that would benefit a lot from a game that doesn't try to make flimsy justifications to make the player character the hero by saying everyone you kill deserved it.
The gameplay is easy enough to fix, which makes it even more apparent how little they cared about the actual game. None of this twating about with weaknesses, simply give enemies access to things the player can do. It would be more fun if you had to relocate every time you sniped someone because the enemy base also has snipers, who are more then happy to give you a "refund" on your bullet, in the exact place you "lost it".

It's strange that Far Cry 3 was not only the peak of the entire series in characterization and ludonarrative synergy, but also the nadir after they killed off Vaas halfway through and sleepwalked their way through the rest of the game. Maybe it's a very sophisticated reference to a Tale of Two Cities ("It was the best of games, it was the worst of games.").
I know that I haven't mustered more than a yawn for a Far Cry game since 3.
