  • Room microphones are an easy way to add depth, space, and excitement to drum recordings. Is it necessary to spend $1000s to get the sound you are looking for? Take a listen to Andy playing the drums, and what the Royer R10, Neumann KM184, Shure SM57, and AKG 414 xlii sound like, and what they add to a simple Glyn Johns mic setup.
All of the room mics were set up 9 feet away from the center of the snare drum at an approximate height of 32 inches. All were recorded at the same time using an Avid Pre 8 channel mic pre into an Apogee Symphony I/O mk2. The recorded tracks were all level-matched. No additional processing was applied to the tracks. The Glyn Johns mics were a pair of Telefunken M16 mkii above the snare and cutting across the floor tom pointed at the snare at a distance of 42". These mics used a cardiod pattern and were recorded using Avalon M5 mic pres into the same Apogee converters. The kick drum was mic'd with a Neumann TLM170 about 4 inches from the reso head of the kick drum. The pre-amp used for the TLM170 was a Warm Audio WA273 with no EQ applied again running into the Apogee. No processing was applied to the Glyn Johns mics.

2:47 I think some of the point with the Glyn Johns, or any other drum miking technique is to have the microphones in the same room as the drumkit. In my 25 years of using that technique I have never heard it sound anything like that. It is a pretty close sounding and detailed drum sound. Quite dry.
I think some quality control is in order!
