    I made my own wooden ring from a stick i found and just sawed off a chunk, drilled a hole in it, and carved the rest out with a knife to the right size. Then i just sanded it some to make it smooth and comfortable. Its still a little big but im happy with it ☺

      Waldo Hofer It is amazing how something so simple can change someone’s life entirely for the better. Thank you for stepping forward. Art always puts a smile on my face and I love to hear how it changes other people’s lives as it means the world to me too. Working with different materials is therapeutic and relaxing. I’m grateful to hear of someone else having the same results and great fun. Thank you

    Lowe’s actually sells a couple types of veneers that is already in strips, it has an adhesive on the back however, you would have to sand it off. Also, a cool thing to do with this could be to layer it with like 3 woods and do an obsidian design that cuts into the other layers

    Nice video, cool to see beginning steps of adding new material to the catalog. I think 3 or 4 layers of bentwood where you intentionally sand through to the next layer (stepped or smooth) and then finished with linseed could make for a killer ring.

  • @tonyjackson9145
    @tonyjackson9145 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    The sanded thru look from one to another could be quite interesting.I would like to see that

  • @nega_tori
    @nega_tori 6 ปีที่แล้ว +9

    If the rings were a bit thicker, it'd be cool to intentionally cut down into another layer that is complementary to the top layer wood. Maybe something more clean like on the lathe. A simple top, bottom, or center groove. I think that'll look pretty cool. Maybe fill it in and have the bottom layer visible but it's all smooth...

    • @Mrpoopin99
      @Mrpoopin99 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Or if instead, he did a 5 layer ring with 2 "base" layers. And then the other 3 layers are different types of wood, and he obsidian facets the wood, so all of the other woods are shown in the facets.

    I've made (and sold) a lot of bentwood rings without any power tools (only CA glue, scissor and tweezer). But, it takes a lot of time to make them smooth and comfortable to wear so i'm planning to get simple power tools such as a dremmel to optimize the production time.

    If you can get some metal powder you can cut a groove in the ring
    then add your CA Glue then add the metal powder
    then just complete the ring the same way

    To get around not having a lathe I just use the Dremel drum sanding head without a sanding drum and wrap it in electrical tape until the ring fits snugly over it and mount it into a vice just tight enough for the Dremel to not move. i can sand the outside like its on a lathe.

    Patrick, I have a question. How much glow powder do you mix in with your day color pigments? I made a few ring blanks on my lathe at work, and I wanted to add a glow strip in the middle, but I have no idea how much pigment to mix in with the glow powder to make sure neither one overpowers the other. Thanks!

    • @PatrickAdairDesigns
      @PatrickAdairDesigns  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Use as little as possible. Mix in a tiny amount then do a color check (get a small pile wet with ca glue) and then keep adding more until you’ve got the color you want.

    • @martyshrekster
      @martyshrekster 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Patrick Adair Designs Thanks! By the way, I wanted to let you know that littlemachineshop sells an ER32 collet chuck for your lathe, it might make it quicker for you to get your ring mandrels spinning true. You just need to buy the chuck and the right sized ER32 collet for the shank on your mandrel, and it will center itself much better. I'm personally making my own chuck since I have access to large CNC machines at work, so if you can find a machine to make it on, I will gladly send you my blueprint for it.
