- We hiked Mariposa Grove Trail in Yosemite National park during winter
The road to mariposa grove is closed during winter. So we parked at the welcome plaza, put on our gaiters, and headed down the Washburn trail.
We didn’t put on micro spikes but packed them just in case.
After about 2 miles we finally made it to the start of the Mariposa Grove Trail. We were instantly greeted by the giant Sequoias.
Our goal was to hike up to Wawona point while enjoying the amazing land marks along the way. We’ve done this hike in other seasons but seeing it covered in snow made it feel like we were visiting for the first time.
We regret not bringing snow shoes because the high levels of snow made the hike a bit more strenuous.
The gaiters did a good job of keeping the snow out of our boots and keeping our feet dry.
Five hours into our hike the fog started to roll in and temperatures were dropping so we decided to turn back.
We hiked down the main road instead of going down Washburn trail.
We hiked a total of 10.5 miles by the time we got back to the car.
Overall this was such a fun hike and we will definitely go again during winter!

Just came back from this trail (up to Cali tunnel)and since it's winter my main advise is that must start at 2pm at least...we got night time using the closed road as instructed here which is the best advice for sure returning to the parking lot...
That’s awesome, was there alot of snow? This trail in particular is really nice in winter. We can’t wait to go back.😁
@roamingthetrails actually 0 snow! I was really hoping to avoid that since we were doing mirror lake and the main views in the valley in the morning and I can tell is no joke that return claim by car if facing too much snow...
My wife got really scare in the way back from Cali tunnel since we were in the trail by 5:30pm still! So of course we were in darkness pretty much the whole way back, using the phone only.Lot's of rain and some granizo but no snow...I brought my trail sticks, spikes and gaiters for nothing but it was for the best I guess being our first time in this time of settings.
Another advice for new comers like we: save the parking location if you are planning to do this late on the day... it's not that easy to find it later since everything is pretty dark.
It’s been such a dry winter. Well I’m glad you guys were able to experience Yosemite, it’s really nice no matter what time of year you visit. Hope you guys made some good memories and took lots of pictures
@@roamingthetrails yeah man, lots of amazing memories and pictures, I think it was a good idea to stay in fish camp too
So pretty, thank you for sharing! Happy hiking!
Thank you 😊
Beautiful 😍
Thank you 😊 hope you get to go one day if you’ve never been
Wow, opening shots are absolutely breathtaking my friend! This looks amazing!
Thank you Brother, much appreciated. I was just looking at your channel. You have some really great stuff yourself 😁
@@roamingthetrails thx, solo hiking is a great passion of mine
I LOVE your channel! You've really inspired me to invest in some good quality pieces, and they have proven so useful the last few weeks in different kinds of weather. You also inspired me to get the Danner Mountain 600 Leaf hiking boots and they have been worth every penny. Excited to see the trails you guys hit during spring & summer!
Thank you so much for your comment and encouragement, truly appreciate it 🫶🏽 hope that gear takes you on many more adventures!
BTW the Leaf edition of your boots are an upgrade from the ones I have. I believe yours can be repaired by the company if they’re ever damaged. Just thought I’d share in case you didn’t know 😊

Thank you Crystal! :) I had no idea!@@roamingthetrails
Thanks for sharing the journey! And, you got to use some of that winter gear!
I appreciate the comment, but yeah it’s always fun to put the gear to use 😅 being a gear geek like myself I enjoy using the gear I bring with me on trails. What adventures have you been on lately?
@@roamingthetrails Yes, I too love the gear. Me lately? I've been trying to move fast enough to stay ahead of the vultures. Literally. On my last hike, now up on my channel, they were circling!
I checked it out, awesome trail. you have the gift for story telling 👍🏼
Girl u better take me next time 🤨
Letsss go
Hey - is it that lonely ? Which date and day of the week was this ? We are new to the country and not very courageous with bears around .. planning to be there on 4 Jan Saturday ..
This was first week of February 2024 on a Saturday. We only say one person during the hike. If you’re worried about wild life and the solitude o would recommend going down to Yosemite Valley or Sequoia National Park instead.
Love the video! just stumbled across your instagram and youtube as I’ve just started exploring national parks cant wait to see more of your recommendations. Mind me asking what was this taken on? The quality is amazing ❤
Thank you for this comment😊 most of the footage was taken on an iPhone 14pro and 14promax. Only one of the shots in this video was taken on our photography camera SonyA7III
Thank you! I’ll look into that camera
Hi mate, planning to do this next week, just wondering what time did you start your hike?
Hello we started just before 8 am. Safe hiking!
How many hours did it take you to do this hike?
about 7.5 hrs since we hike slower in snow and we took a lots of breaks to take pictures
Do you know if Wawona road was closed?
No Wawona road was open but it did require chains and or 4WD with snow tires.
You can call (209)372-0200 for current road conditions.
@@roamingthetrails Thanks!
