This song is a bittersweet memory of my early twenties, my father's death, my falure at university, depression, poverty... It is a sad song, yet dear to me, because it voiced my feelings at that time.
This song should have been as big as everybody hurts. Very under rated. Classic song. Reveal was a masterpiece too. 15 years old already ... Time Flies!
The rain came down The rain came down The rain came down on me The wind blew strong The summer song Fades to memory I knew you when I loved you then The summer's young and helpless You laid me bare You marked me there The promises we made I used to think As birds take wing They sing through life so why can't we? You cling to this You claim the best If this is what you're offering I'll take the rain I'll take the rain The nighttime creases Summer schemes And stretches out to stay The sun shines down You came around You love easy days But now the sun The winter's come I wanted just to say That if I hold I'd hope you'd fold Open up inside, inside of me I used to think As birds take wing They sing through life so why can't we? You cling to this You claim the best If this is what you're offering I'll take the rain I'll take the rain This winter song I'll sing along I've searched its still refrain I'll walk alone I've given this, take wing Celebrate the rain I used to think As birds take wing They sing through life so why can't we? You cling to this You claim the best If this is what you're offering I'll take the rain I'll take the rain
This reminds me of a biblical verse of how God provides for the birds, and how much more are we. In all good times everything comes as surely as everything passes.
So about 18 years ago (Yes I'm old), I was going to work everyday on the bus listening to 'Reveal' on my personal CD player (To those that are too young, a CD is a round disc that has music on it and a personal CD player was the equivalent of an ipod. Yes I really am old....) and this was/is my favourite song from the album. R.E.M were back to their best with this one. Pure poetry.
This is not a young man's song. Rather it is one for a wise one, of a man who has learned to let go and accept the imperfections of his life and of life in general. While it can easily be a song of sacrifice or martyrdom, anyone who has truly seen chapters of life go by knows those regrets are better lived honestly than lied spitefully.
As with all of R.E.M.'s songs, there is the lyrical depth and emotional scope to arrive at several different interpretations. My personal interpretation would be that this song is an acceptance that some are lucky enough to live easy lives whilst others must struggle daily. The speaker is accepting that he's been dealt a bad hand but is resolving to make the most of his life. However it's interpreted, it remains an extremely emotional and first rate song, one of my favourites... Vive R.E.M.!
Nightswimming, Find the River and this one here (and ofc. many more)... I don't know what Micheal wanted to say with those lyrics, but he hits everything i need and want to feel. Genious.
How is it that REM managed to put all kinds of feelings an emotions into song in such a deep and understanding way? I'll take the rain is such a great track!
One of the most underrated songs of all times. If it comes to living the paradise of someone else or the rains of my vision I'll take the rain, I may suffer the floods but at the end lays the gardens gate of my own paradise.
This song and video are so right on for me. I see losing my father. Him being the skateboard. And rolling through my healing with him with me throughout it all. And then him letting me go only when I am ready.
Stipe wrote so many lyrics that feel that they came from my own heart, when I couldn't find the words, when no other artist could. I think a lot of people feel this way.
The highlight song of a very underrated album... after all these years i am still surprised, how deep this song and the lyrics can touch your heart and soul. Thanks for this!!!
For me this is the best R.E.M. song and one of the most beautiful tracks i've ever heard in my life. Perfect lyrics and the clip gives me goosebumps every time i see it. Simply mesmerizing
When I was 9 years old, my dad bought a DVD with some rem music, and this one called my attention just for the fact that it was a cartoon, now this is one of my favorite rem songs :)
In the end-we will take the rain. It is easier that way.. I guess. Broken promises, dreams.. they stay together in the past like sad picture frozen in time.We forgot them, we remember just how we felt, how we loved..as time goes by and nostalgia win over our memories. Shame, this song is so underrated.
it is like after all these years , failures, tears and broken promises we have to accept the status quo and go on... it is sad and hurting but nothing else can be done :(
Sadly, many will not take the rain. They stay in dysfunctional relationships because breaking up is too difficult and painful. It’s not easy to take the rain, but sometimes it’s what you have to do.
I stumbled upon this cause I've been on a rem kick recently, after years and years of just vaguely knowing them and their hits. As soon as it started I got a wave of vertigo: I already know and love this song, probably from when i was a kid and it came out, but I had no memory of it up until 4 minutes ago. It's also shocking how under-rated the entire "Reveal " album is. It's a real gem and this song is just one of many highlights.

Oh I am sorry to hear that, hopefully your life gets better from now on.
The softness of Stipe's voice in this one is magical.
Timeless gold here. Even the 1 ‘sad’ song on this record is pretty upbeat!
“And if I hold, I’d hope you’d fold, and open up inside, inside of me” is quite possibly the most beautiful line of verse ever written.
This song is poetry - god bless and love to anyone reading this who’s going through a difficult time, you are not alone🙏🏽🤝🏴
What a golden thing to say. I love you!

The rain came down
The rain came down
The rain came down on me
The wind blew strong
The summer song
Fades to memory
I knew you when
I loved you then
The summer's young and helpless
You laid me bare
You marked me there
The promises we made
I used to think
As birds take wing
They sing through life so why can't we?
You cling to this
You claim the best
If this is what you're offering
I'll take the rain
I'll take the rain
The nighttime creases
Summer schemes
And stretches out to stay
The sun shines down
You came around
You love easy days
But now the sun
The winter's come
I wanted just to say
That if I hold
I'd hope you'd fold
Open up inside, inside of me
I used to think
As birds take wing
They sing through life so why can't we?
You cling to this
You claim the best
If this is what you're offering
I'll take the rain
I'll take the rain
This winter song
I'll sing along
I've searched its still refrain
I'll walk alone
I've given this, take wing
Celebrate the rain
I used to think
As birds take wing
They sing through life so why can't we?
You cling to this
You claim the best
If this is what you're offering
I'll take the rain
I'll take the rain
Treat these lyrics with caution, they are not entirely correct, and unfortunately somewhat change the meaning of the song.
This reminds me of a biblical verse of how God provides for the birds, and how much more are we. In all good times everything comes as surely as everything passes.

Music for Portugal & Brazil
A chuva caiu
A chuva caiu
A chuva caiu em mim
O vento soprou forte
E a música do verão
Some na memória
Eu conhecia você quando
Eu amava você depois
No bocejo do verão, agora sem esperança
Você me deitou nu
E me marcou lá
As promessas que fizemos
Eu costumava pensar, como os pássaros voam,
Eles cantam pela vida, então por que não podemos?
Nós nos apegamos a isso e reivindicamos o melhor
Se isso é o que você está oferecendo
Eu vou pegar a chuva, eu vou pegar a chuva
O tempo da noite vinca
Esquemas de verão
E estica pra trazer
Os raios de Sol abaixo
Você apareceu
Seu amor nos dias fáceis
Mas agora o Sol,
O inverno chegou
Eu vou pegar a chuva, eu vou pegar a chuva
A música do inverno
Eu vou cantarolar
Eu procurei seu refrão parado
Eu vou andar sozinho
Dado isto,
Voar e celebrar a chuva
Eu costumava pensar, como os pássaros voam,
Eles cantam pela vida, então por que não podemos?
Nós nos apegamos a isso e reivindicamos o melhor
Se isso é o que você está oferecendo
