My mum used to play this song to me every evening before bedtime when I was a little girl. I used to demand to listen to “elephant up the stairs” every evening whilst jumping frantically on the bed holding her hands. This has always been our song. She passed away 2 weeks ago yesterday and I listened to this on the car journey home from the hospital after her passing away holding my hand. She was the love and light of my life. My best friend, my soulmate, my greatest confidant, supporter, and had a heart of gold. Our bond was ethereal and other worldly. It was greater than anything that could be explained in this life. It was gifted from the great beyond. Love you forever mumma. ❤️

I understand. I discovered REM while in middle school in the early 1980s. Their music was integral in my life thru high school and college. I also spent a lot of time in Athens, Ga visiting friends and partying where REM was always played. Their older songs bring back so many memories. Even though you're in your 40s, the music sticks with you and shapes your life.

This song always brings a tear to my eye. I just remember about 8 years ago and 6 year old me loved watching the video and listening to the music every day...
Probably my favorite song ever, insanely beautiful. First time i heard it was back in December 2003, at that time i used to borrow my Playstation 1 to my older sister for playing cds. I couldn't put a toy together (a beyblade), so i walked into our bedroom to ask her to help me out and this song was playing in the background. I had to stop doing anything to listen to it in religious silence. I was in total awe. Unbelievable, amazing. Magical. When the chorus kicked in for the first time in the song i was hooked. So i checked the album booklet, it was the track number 2 on "In Time: The Best Of R.E.M 1988-2003". Also "Bad Day" and "Animal" were the only two new songs, of course since it mainly was a greatest hits haha! At that time i already knew R.E.M. though, as a fresh 13 year old boy.
One of the best songs ever. I recall hearing this on Radio here in Melbourne, Australia, in 2000, coincidentally with the movie, "Man On The Moon", when I was then age 30. All these years later as a middle aged man, this is still just as great now as it was in 2000.
Gosh this song speaks to me. Andy Kaufman was the man on the moon, not because he was alone, but because he saw the world diffrent than anyone who lived on it. Almost like he was on the moon. People didnt know what to think about him, so he struggled to have people understand him. He was fighting an uphill battle against society and against the norm. Like pushing an elephant up the stairs. And he did things that were funny to him. He didn't care about what his audience thought about him, he was being his own person all the time. He threw punchline that were never there. He was just diffrent and I admire him. I wish I was around when he was alive because he is one of my inspirations in life. If you read all the way to the bottom, then thank you ✌😁
The mistake people make regarding Kaufman is that he was a comedian, which is incorrect. A comedian always wants their audience to laugh and to like them, where as Andy was a performance artist. Sure, sometimes he desired laughs. But sometimes he wanted your pity. Others your anger. Most always your confusion. He was the first man in media to constantly make you wonder if what he was doing was scripted or real. Thats why he took to wrestling so much... the art of the wrestling promo, you have the good guy and the bad guy, one incites cheers and support, the other a dastardly wrong doer you're begging to see get their comeuppance, Andy LOVED that character work. You're absolutely right about the only person he was wanting to impress was himself, to see just how far he could push certain buttons, and boy did he make some lasting memories. The fact that some people STILL aren't 100 percent sure that he's dead, he would have LOVED knowing that.
I watched the documentary "Jim & Andy" about two years ago on Netflix and it is still by far one of the greatests things I've ever seen. Love this song and the hidden meaning it contains. Jim Carrey totally performer genius. Highly recommended in case you wanna watch the documentary.
My Dad would play this on full blast in the car and us kids; me, my sister & cousins would sing the whole song at the top of our lungs until our vocal chords gave out. And then the song would end and Dad would say "whose up for round two?" - and we'd do it all over again. This song came on the radio in the car today & cracked up the volume and screeched every word. (Side note, it is a great anger-release when you have built up rage.)
Absolutely. This one is among my REM best songs. I recommend you RED CAN, I think they have some influence from REM..the way their lyrics are...pretty cool. Glad I found them cause I have never been at the beggining of a band

Part of my music therapy
I love R.E.M.
Probably one of the greatest choruses of all time
One of the best songs ever.
Love Michael and this song.
This song frightens me.
Definitely one of their best songs!! The melody, harmonies and chord progressions are truly masterful.
I am sure 100% REM is on the Top 10 90s best bands ever.
(I am sure 100%) REM is (on) the Top (10 90s best) band(s) ever. 👍
I watched the documentary "Jim & Andy" about two years ago on Netflix and it is still by far one of the greatests things I've ever seen.
Love this song and the hidden meaning it contains. Jim Carrey totally performer genius.
Highly recommended in case you wanna watch the documentary.
Wasn't really impressed with Carrey in it. Played it way too over the top and acted like a prick in set.
When I was vert little, we had a Best of R.E.M. CD that had this song on it. I hadn't heard this song in nearly 2 decades until now.
I’ve never like the band REM but I really like this song
R.E.M. Great Band, one of the best bands ever .
Clearly one of the greatest bands ever
no disagreement here!
this is one of the greatest songs ever recorded. and thats the end of that.
At the end, I wanted the TV in the street to get hit by a car. That would have been an Andy Kaufman performance.
Jay Silva Amen to that
REM is amazing!
(Side note, it is a great anger-release when you have built up rage.)
the chorus always gets me
i use only one spoon for coffee over a period of years breaking through.
Yep, it’s beautiful, truly beautiful. This song, alongside Man on the Moon (another reference to Andy Kaufman) and Leaving New York, is a masterpiece.
are you feeling it now mr krabs
Are you referring to the I'm looking for Answers from the great beyond Answers from the great Answers?
My all time favourite song.

In the early 1990s, they were "Losing Their Religion," and later in the decade they were looking for answers from "The Great Beyond." What an arc!

This song always made me feel like it was OK to be myself no matter how "weird" others thought I was...
Gotta love Michael's performance when he's actually performing in front of a camera. Either way, great song. I truly miss R.E.M.
This is the song that made me realize that REM and Michael were great! Timeless.
rem performs another prototype video.amazing...
"Absolutely extraordinary".
great song from a f'n AWESOME movie ! Carrey's performance is so underrated - and yet so true to Kaufman's spirit...
Classic song, wish we had music like this nowadays !!!
Wish the guys were still together again.
2022 still rocks today even after all these years !!!
Its 2019 and I have to go back to songs like this just to feel SOMETHING from music
I'd recommend listening to Hozier's Cherry Wine, Interpol's Evil, or Cinematic Orchestra's To Build a Home.
@@MegaSpideyman Hosier sucks
@Kevin Davies true
MegaSpideyman To build a home is absolutely beautiful ❤️
Absolutely. This one is among my REM best songs. I recommend you RED CAN, I think they have some influence from REM..the way their lyrics are...pretty cool. Glad I found them cause I have never been at the beggining of a band
so beautiful!
Thank you very much.
I usually write nothing as comments: i'm a shy person.
But today, listening for the 100th time this song, i cried. Literally.
And writing about how much this thing is beautiful for me, has become important.Thank you R.E.M.
