    Laser projector doesn't really require focus lens, since it shoots its concentrated beam in a straight line. It is consider the most efficient light source with minimal loss because the light didn't spread out.

    • @nialltracey2599
      @nialltracey2599 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I was just going to say the same thin. A DLP projector makes up the image in the projector then shines light through it, hence the need for focusing. In a MEMS projector, the "image" is only created when the laser beam hits the wall/screen.
      Eve if the laser isn't perfectly collimated, you're still getting mostly distinct pixels at any distance with no need to set the focus.

    • @Ucceah
      @Ucceah 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      you beat me to it too. but i can add a little more insight and terminology.
      MEMS is a broder term, covering all micro-electromechanical devices, not just oprical ones.
      DLP (digital light proceccing) is a texas instuments trademark for digital micromirror arrays. these reflect the whole image at once, to over-simply it a bit
      what's used here is a is a MEMS 2D scanning micromirror device, aka a microscanner. it reflects and diffraacts a single beam (an RBG laser, in this case) and scans the image line by line, very much like CRT TVs did. (hence the scanline artifacts in the video)

      Yeah he could have just set the small board up to the middle of the image and both halfs would be perfectly fine to see (just different in size and brightness)
      Only 720p ofc is a little sad but if you consider that most beamers still only come in 1080p and some 4k ones have to shift their (1080p) DLP matrix because building it smaller isn't possible/feasible i think that such a small device with only 720p is to be expected ...

    I have a 720p projector at home with a 100" screen. I have never been disappointed by it. I know what it is and it works for me currently. You stress this so much in the video, but 720p is not bad if you don't obsess over it.

    • @Junyo
      @Junyo 3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Same here - very satisfied with the video-quality of my 720p native projector.
      What sets THIS thing apart from my projector is that it doesn't use a fan so its completely quiet, but ETA doesn't mention THAT part at all.
      Also, laser-projectors don't NEED focusing - that is the whole deal - also not something ETA seems to understand (or explain).
      My main objection to this projector would be the price...$200+ is just too expensive for a 720p projector of any type.

      Projector tracing is used for mural work on large walls. The artist would have a small hand drawn piece that he would run through the projector, casting it on the wall for the mural and then the artist would trace over it with a pencil before painting it up. This same method could also be used for transferring small drawings to a canvas for painting... as long as the drawing that is being traced is by the artist him/herself or a the artist who did that drawing is helping with the project then it is fine.

      @mattm7220 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      To be fair, there's moving parts in a DLP projector as well, so that's not really something specific to laser projectors. Also, getting something bigger doesn't really mean that it will have to be manually focused - there are 1080p (and even 4K) laser projectors out there. They just aren't exactly small, or cheap.

    • @johnbuscher
      @johnbuscher 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@acumenium8157 13 years is closer to 10 than 20, bruv. 1080p was only becoming more popular 2009 and up, hence the GTX 750 was making 1080p gaming available to average consumers. Your complaint is like saying the RX 580 is terrible because the 6800 XT exists. They're very different in price brackets and power consumption and one may be good enough for someone while the other is way beyond the budget.
      The fact of the matter is, this was designed for an audience that prioritizes portability and the ability to put it away, just like handheld consoles. If you don't like it, you don't have to buy it. Stop forcing other people to share your tastes.

    Hey ETA. I think you underrepresented the device. It wasnt meant to be a do all for cheap. Its not a competitor for a $35,000 SONY or JVC projector. Its a small pocket sized projector that does an amazing job for its price and size. Just go back 5 years and find something that could do the same for this cheap. Almost in the burner phone category where the price is such that if it was misplaced you could just get another. I think its cool for its intended use and plan to get one if not just for fun. The many thousands projectors still have their place.

    • @mattm7220
      @mattm7220 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@_._shinonome_._ I understand it's intended use, but nothing that is designed for a portable use should have a brightness so low that it requires absolute darkness to be useful. Outside if not completely dark - there are street lights, neighbours' house lights - far from a dark enough environment for 150 lumens to be watchable. And you're ignoring the fact that people wouldn't exclusively want to use it late at night - the price tag for a projector that can only be used during a restricted set of hours (when it's dark enough), and in an environment where lighting can be controlled (basically only a home theatre setup) should be MUCH lower than this is. I understand it's laser, and that puts the price up, but to justify its usefulness, the brightness needs to at least be enough to overcome ambient light outdoors in a typical backyard - which 150 lumens is not.

  • @XSpImmaLion
    @XSpImmaLion 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Is it 720p tho? :P
    720p is fine, specially on a projector this size, at that price, that consumes this much power... anything else in that price and size category tends to be lower than 480p, require even more power, and be way more fussy with keystoning and focus. Also, because this uses laser, no worries about lamp replacement and whatnot.
    The only major problem of this projector is that it really needs absolute darkness. The image is very very dim, particularly at big screen sizes.
    But I really like where the tech is pointing out to. Hopefully it continues getting better.
    Oh, btw, I have one of those.... got it before Nebra came into the thing I guess, mine only says Anybeam, no Nebra.
    I do agree with ETA though, but not because of 720p.... just because of brightness. The res and brightness falls fast at bigger screen sizes.
    As a portable monitor alternative though, I can see it working for some cases.

    100" projection at 720p looks fine. If you're more than 10' away or so, it's barely distinguishable. Back when there was a big price difference between 720p and 1080p you could find guides on this (e.g. Lifehacker has one still up). You have to get closer than 10' or bigger than 100" for the average person to even notice the difference, so when you were talking 2x the price, 1080p was ill advised.

    IMHO the 150 lumens is a bigger drawback than the resolution, which I believe is 720p... ;) With that low power output, the color will washout with any sort of light in the room. I was really hoping we'd see this improve with laser projectors, but I'm guessing there are some limits being placed on them for safety?

    720p isn't the problem and i think 1080p wouldn't do so much difference. It's about the speckles this laser produces. Step forward would be a speckle free pico laser, even 720p would look great.
    I've had Voga V laser smartphone since 2017, bought it from gearbest for $337. I bet it is exactly same module that this has. It is really good for travel and I've used it alot lying in bed, It's suprisingly bright, i have no problems to read morning news and watch youtube videos with it even in daytime when it's not direct sunlight and colors are great (in about 100 inches).

    I've turned up in places to give lectures where the venue's system has failed. I'll not pretend that I'd want this for high quality videos but with slides (eg libreoffice) 720p is quite enough. Even with battery pack, table-top tripod, cables, and small external speakers, this would fit into my laptop bag for those 'just in case' situations.

  • @AninoNiKugi
    @AninoNiKugi 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I don't think having a 720p resolution is a bad thing in this case. Both the resolution and lumens are actually good for this size. Pico projectors at this size usually only have 480p and 100 lumens. I'm not sure how much pico projectors have advanced in recent years but this is what I know when I searched the market for one 2 years ago. I've only seen 1080p and 800 lumens on a projector on maybe around 6 times the size of this.

    For 229$, 720p would be expected honestly. But! Not using a lcd display, lower resolutions even at larger sizes isnt as bad as you'd think. For DVDs and older games, it's actually better to have that 720p.

This product looks like it doesn't emit sound (other than the speaker) so it looks like it would be a great upgrade. Apart from the fact that 720p is perfectly usable for a projector AND that laser projection technology at that size is probably what is limiting the resolution... You were reviewing the picture quality on a very rough wall. I know most people won't exactly use this with a projection screen, but commenting on the picture quality on a rough wall just is not fair...

    Reminds me of the PicoP laser projector that came out several years ago. Their ShowW++ model has been discontinued but the laser module for it supports a really weird resolution of 1920x720 or was it 1080x720? Anyway the market gods of war long ago decided that these compromises are the industry norm for this form factor. For mobile DJs this is a cool way to add some background visuals with focus-free perfect focus of their videos. You failed to play around with projecting onto oddly shaped surfaces which is usually a strength of laser projectors, especially cool is projection mapping onto static and moving targets (people, animals, mechanical objects, etc). I could easily see this being housed in an all weather security camera enclosure where it can be used to project images, video, mood lighting on your lawn (in place of or in addition to) your normal outdoor light bulb, to create cool visuals for under a car's carriage, to create super awesome effects when paired with a fog screen for vaporous ghostly whimsy, as part of an art display using prisms and mirrors to sculpt the images and motion graphics to the interior of light controlled enclosures.
    Netherworld has used tiny projectors to create unique scares in their gallery at their former Norcross, Georgia location. Care to create an active plasma sphere like in the Arc Reactor from Iron Man? A laser projector can do it quite easily. Nothing like the 4K short throw laser projector from LG but it is a whole lot smaller. You can realize the same type of fluid energy in other frosted lamp shades of all manner of sizes and shapes. You only need the right kind of projector, cool visuals (perhaps fractals?), and a nice looking surface to project onto or into. Maybe sneak it into an aquarium to see if the fishies swimming around you take an interest to it? Or, a cat light for ceiling mounted laser pointer-like fun?

    Is there any lightweight and unprofessional software to align the image if the projector is placed sideways with the hdmi cable? (for reasons of space I cannot project with the projector straight ..) I bought a miniprojector that with android 7.1 allows me to position the projector where I want and to have a large or small square or rectangle, (the problem is that when I connect the hdmi cable the image resets itself, deforming ... obviously, if it is posizinato laterally ..). A way to save the settings made by me on android that do not change when I connect the hdmi cable esite ?? (it has keystone correction but it only works if everything is centered, also the keystonec does not allow me to shrink the image and change the shape as it happens with android 7.1.

    I have a so-called 1080p projector but because I can't focus it properly and because of it having these awfully large scan-lines this 720p projector looks like alien technology in comparison. The only reason I haven't tossed it into e-waste is because it also had a built-in CD player and decent speakers and also can connect via bluetooth for audioplayback so at least it is good as a soundsystem.
    But anyways, the focusing of the Pico projector alone is enough for me to like it. You don't need higher than 480p to play something like PS2 games or whatever the Raspberry Pi 4 can run/emulate.

  • @mattm7220

    I would argue that the 720p resolution isn't the biggest downside to this, but instead the fact that it's *only* 150 lumen equivalent. That's basically only useful if you can control the lighting to get a near-pitch black room. I'd be fine with the 720p resolution if they would at least get it up to 800 lumen equivalent minimum (but preferably closer to 1500/2000) to be actually usable in a real-world setting. If it's supposed to be portable, I shouldn't have to be bringing full blackout curtains with me as well as the projector 😂
