  • The Harbor Freight jack stand recall made me look for the best budget jack stand with a locking pin. I bought three sets of safety stands to find out.
    Here’s the Harbor Freight jack stand recall:

    I have those same Pro-Lift stands. The build quality on mime are very good. I've used them quite a bit and have had no problems. I always keep the floor jack and the tires under the car for extra safety.

    The thing to consider when looking at welds is how it gets in the joint. This isn’t easy to see without destructive testing. A friend of mine was a test technician at a major tractor company in Iowa. He explained this too me when I was a young engineer. They would take cross sections of welds to test their processes. The point being is that a pretty looking weld can actually be trash. This makes it difficult for the consumer to judge the quality of a weld without testing it to yield or cutting a cross section.

    Torin must have seen this video, I just bought the 3Ton with locking pin and I must say the welds are very uniform and clean. The pin also now goes in deep to the ratchet tooth giving it way more support than the one shown in this video.

    Been using the Big Reds for quite a few years, they've been working pretty well and the engagement really improves with weight on them. The slack really gets taken up as soon as the pressure seats the post into the pawl/locking pin.

    Another scary issue is that a "pretty" MIG weld can still be a bad weld. If the welder doesn't stay in the very front of the puddle, the weld will cold lap while still looking visually fine.

    Send them to one of the channels that uses hydraulic presses and see how they do. It would be interesting to see how the welds hold up, and if the "good" welds, which some has pointed out not necessarily are good just because they look even, are noticeably worse than the splatter feasts. Also the security pin on the Torin stand look like it would fail easily. With that small an area of engagement I wonder what they were thinking.
    On another note I'd be very vary of jack stands made of aluminium. It's a far weaker material than (at least decent) steel, and would have to be made from much thicker material. Only positives I see are weight and that they won't rust. But if you are not transporting them weight isn't that important and I at least tend to store the jack stands inside so rust isn't that big of an issue.

    Even before the HF recall. I've had concerns of Jack stands w/o a secondary locking feature. I bought the Torin pair and were beautiful, except had a bubble weld on neck next to the lever. I returned them for another pair. The welds are good, but the painting was light in some areas. I'll go with the good welds and crappy paint. However, now I am having second thoughts and may buy the pro lift as the second pair. Great review, BTW.

If the consumers buy garbage either because they don't know any better or if its all they can afford, then the product will sell if there are not that many alternatives. Think of it like this: Jeep makes nice looking but very poor quality vehicles that attract consumers. Why would Jeep improve the quality of their cars (and I am talking Toyota quality here) if there is a demand for their crappy junky cars? There is no incentive to stop selling junk if that is what people like.

    Jack-stands are like anvils, you need one your entire life. If you get a good set of stands, you will only ever need that one set. Be a baller and get 4. Even paying through the nose is only going to cost you 200 bucks for 4. I see reasons to cheap out on a lot of tools, this doesn't seem like a good area to be thrifty when purchasing.

    I'd avoid the torin stands. I've had the welds and the sheet metal fail on a set of 2 ton jack stands. Just using the two of the jack stands to support half of my car a few times caused them to bend in the legs where the horizontal beam is at the bottom. Me and my friend had to whack them back in shape to be able to use them in the short time I had them. I actually have the Pro-Lift Jack stands you show here and they have been reliable and I had a friend of mine confirmed they were good welds on my set of 4. He said he would get under the car supported by it. The Torins got sent to the scrap yard for the $2 of scrap they were made of. I will never ever buy their jack stands again.

    I can attest to the Esco jack stands. Got myself a set of 4 10498's - the taller set, along with a set of 4 10499's for my dad - the shorter set. Welds are meh, but the pin design, flat saddle, and solidness exuded by these makes me feel so confident being under a car vs traditional ratcheting stands. I also appreciate the large feet on them that don't dig into the ground like traditional stands, plus it's a tripod design, so it never rocks. Well worth the money in my opinion.

    35 years ago I built my own. 1 1/2 inch schedule 80 pipe welded to 1/4 inch thick 6 x 6 plate, and 3/16 inch thick triangular gussets at each corner - the adjustable inside pipe is 1 inch schedule 80 with 1/4 inch flat bar top bent into a mild "V". Pins are 1/2 inch, grade 5 with sash chains attached. Overall collapsed height is 10 1/2 inches. Didn't cost me a penny - was an iron worker and used shop scrap. So I say, if you have the material and talent, build your own - if you can't then find someone who does fabricate for a living and hire them to make you a set. Peace of mind insurance.

    Don’t have any prolifit jack stands but I do have a small pro lift bottle jack that I used at work. I had on several occasions used a 2’-3’ cheater bar on the handle to get every last bit of pressure of it that I could. I used it pretty regularly for around a year and it’s still holding up great, the base is bowed slightly where I had to much pressure on it inside of pipe, but other than that no complaints.

They are amazing for the price. Just for the 3 ton during the parking lot sale for $28!! Normally $50. There are review videos breaking down the build quality of them. On a crush test video it beat the pro lift pl3300 at 11,500 pounds! For one same jacks stand. That’s insane. which is the more expensive pro lift version of this one in the video at double the cost.

I don’t understand, though, why more jack stands don’t offer a flat platform, as the Jasco’s do. That is a much better design for today’s cars.

      I'm not too scared to use them because I think the most common point of failure is going to be the locking mechanism and it doesn't get more secure than a good old fashioned pin. I would never put 3 tons per stand on them, though, as they recommend. Also, I got my stands on sale at Fleet Farm for around 30 bucks earlier this week.

I have no idea when I'll need them but now they're safer. Dorman #29006 (2pcs) and a little bending and cutting to fit.

    Wouldn't peening in that tab on the side keep anybody from fully extending the jack stand like you were concerned about? I agree that that's bad practice, but that's the primary purpose of that tab (right?).
    Also, I saw another video that was praising the architecture of jack stands that had an extra bar (for lack of a better word) all the way around the bottom of the jack stand, to have one more safety mechanism in case one of those welds down the sides give way under too much pressure. Care to comment on that? It made sense to me, but it looks like stands with that kind of build (e.g., US Jack) are all on the pricey side.
    And finally, regarding the per vs. pair question you brought up, I found this, for what it's worth:
    "The ASME PASE-2014 (Safety Standard for Portable Automotive Service Equipment) states that jack stands must be rated as a pair and not rated per stand. This became effective in late December of 2015. It also states: “Maximum load capacity per matched pair shall not exceed the rated capacity of the individual stand”."
    Hope this helps, and thanks for the excellent and informative video!

    • @ToolTeardowns
      @ToolTeardowns  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The tab prevents you from completely removing the post. I was warning people against using any stands on the tallest setting, which is when they're the least stable.

  • @unebonnevie
    @unebonnevie ปีที่แล้ว

    Because the jack stands' total tonnage support is for EACH PAIR of jack stands. Based on the video, basic thinking would be to buy a PAIR of jack stands that support TWICE the weight of your car. So, if your car is 6000lbs (3 tons) in weight, you would NOT want to buy a 3-ton PAIR of jack stands. If one fails, the other will, because the other one can't handle 3-ton of weight by itself. You would want to buy a 6-ton PAIR of jack stands!

    Nice video. Like you, I just don't like ratchet stands - not enough tooth engagement for my liking especially considering the recent HF recalls (2). I just bought the Esco pin stands that are rated at 3 tons EACH, so 6 tons a pair. The post is solid not hollow and the welds are pretty good with no foot wobble on the 3 legged design which is supported with extra struts all the way around. I don't mind spending a little over a $100/pair when it comes to my safety and don't think twice about getting under my Tacoma P/U with these.
