      Couple years ago I bumped one putting tools under a boat trailer and the trailer immediately dropped. Guessing it was holding 1000 lbs at the time, and bumping a ratchet into the lever was all that was needed for it to drop.

    • @MurphysLawGarage
      @MurphysLawGarage  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It didn’t sheer, I was able to beat it back down and it returned to functioning.

    • @TJ-pe6ej
      @TJ-pe6ej 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I don't believe that.
      When you were giving it a "love tap" with the handle, the handle suddenly failed and the got stuck pointing up, indicating the safety pin sheared. When you were showing them on the tailgate, the second stand's handle is pointing down and resting on the base rather than sticking out at 90 degrees, indicating the safety pin sheared.
      I don't know if you just didn't think about it or notice it, but am pretty positive the safety pin sheered and the handle broke as intended.

      I wish the stuff you can get at harbor freight was available as made in usa and readily available to purchase. They have been innovative in their product delivery and availability. Any piece of equipment should be treated with respect and expected to fail or expect the unexpected. For the price, many harbor freight tools are worth their weight in gold. Others however might not be worth a steamy pile of cold morning outhouse crap.

    When I use jack stands,I always keep the floor jack under tension after backing it away to have the full weight on the jack stands. I also place the wheel and tire under the frame as a third back up! It might seem to be a little over kill but I will never place my life to any jack stand!

Sad part is I had a close call and thought I just hadn’t gotten the locks in place, when in reality I had actually bumped the stand with my foot sliding out from under the car. Near death story. I had a set of the 61197 6 ton jack stands from Harbor Freight. The front of the truck was sitting on the jack stands under the frame. I was under the f-150, laying on the ground I pulled on the front bumper to slide my body out from under the vehicle after I had made my repair. The jack stands failed and the truck fell on me. Thank God the wheels were on the truck, otherwise I would have been crushed, suffocated, bled out, or all 3. I suffered no injuries other than paranoia now every time I'm under a vehicle. These jack stands are no joke and you should check your stands and immediately return these if you have the ones that are being recalled.

      It's only the extension ratchet that fails. The body of the jack stand is not the problem. So the truck would of only went down to the height of the stand. Like you said you had the wheels on, even if you didn't have the wheel on the stand body would of stopped the truck from completely hitting the ground.

    Hi, this is an extremely impressive video ty, not many people care about other people lives, you reached out to the world to make it known that product is defective and you showed pure quality compassion to save lives, my hat is off to you my friend and my deepest respect to this video, I also have the pleasure of seeing first hand that hf stands behind the product they sell, exchange no question asked with a much safer product that you tested and it held up to it’s potential, excellent quality video ty so much, much respect, Bob Frate,

    I noticed in the test at HF, when you used the release lever on the recalled stand it just straight drops. On the new one there is a bit of rise to the extension as you rotate the release lever. That's what you want to see. That makes it impossible to release that stand with any real weight on it.

      You got the NEWER Pittsburgh stands made AFTER the resolution of the recall?
      I have a pair of the 3-ton ones, and the pawl engagement is way better than the ones in this video.
      Another point of failure not shown in this video was separation of the welded seams on the base because the factory welds hadn't penetrated. I read of a few guys who ground the paint off, and ran full-penetration welds down those side seams to cure that.
      Also, the throat of the older version was too wide between the pawl and the "blank" back of the post, so the pawl was engaging, but not much, and it was well beyond the point of being flat to the teeth on the post, so there were cases where the pawl engagement was so shallow that the load on the post just bent the tip of the nose on the pawl, and the stand collapsed.

    • @MurphysLawGarage
      @MurphysLawGarage  ปีที่แล้ว

      I covered the welds in a video after this one - the replacement stands failed in this way. Moral of the story here is not to trust HF with safety equipment.

    The release handle is suppose to break loose from the latching paw when there’s weight on the jack stand and when up force on the handle. It’s a safety shear pin, and you can see it on the latching paw assembly

    A few years ago I was working underneath my car while it was on jackstands, one of my jeans pant legs got caught on the release handle, and got hooked on real good. I was panicking because I was effectively trapped under the car with no way to get out without pulling my leg that was caught on the release handle. I thought about just undoing my pants and getting out butt-naked but my sneakers would have kept me from getting the pants off and I wasn't in a position to kick them off without tugging on the handle. The minutes I spent unhooking myself while underneath the car felt like an eternity.

    The most important factor for proper pawl engagement/retention is that the upright must be lifted slightly for the pawl to come out. If you watch the upright on the new stand you will see it rise when he actuates the pawl lever.

    That’s why I bought the jack stands where there have a secondary pin so even if you lifted the handle they wouldn’t collapse til you pulled the pin out.

      Or the old-school ones that just have a big transverse pin and no ratchet mechanism. A little slower to set up, but as idiot-proof as they come. You can even replace the pin with a nut and bolt so they absolutely will not slip out. Another case of "progress" actually making things worse.

    I've had one of these drop a 99 Ford Explorer on me 3 years ago. They were under the rear axle holding the rear end up and it just dropped straight down. Luckily the tires were still on the vehicle and there was probably a quarter inch of space left from the frame rail and my chest. The stands went to my scrap metal pile immediately after.

    This is honestly why I always use double jack stands, I always have to have a extra one on there just in case one fails. I even re pump the jack just to where it starts to build pressure so the jack stands are doing most of the work but the jack is still there just in case.

    Use tyres under with the jack in place and stands! That’s 3 things there to stop you from being crushed! I use the old style stands (pull up and insert the thick metal pin) just takes an extra second to set up but safety is key. At worst I’d end up with a broken nose lol

      Murphy's Law Garage no worries! There are a lot of the same jack stands here (and with poor quality welds not to mention not fully locking in the teeth) without any recalls as far as I’m aware so I just steer clear of them and watching your video they look pretty much the same. I think ‘they’ are trying to kill us 🤣

      @@MurphysLawGarage I prefer a rigid truck frame with a proper suspension for improved ride quality. Jacking up an empty pickup truck by the center of the frame and casually noticing (eyeballing) a sagging frame sounds like a flexible frame to me. Might be hard to control when loaded to the max.

    • @MurphysLawGarage

    One thing that you definitely want to see is the cast center section (saddle) needs to raise up when the ratchet is engaged in the tooth section while lifting the handle to release the pawl. The more lift of the saddle, the more it is engaged and the more something weighs, the more secure it will grip because it will require the vehicle to raise before it can come down. Yours were of the mousetrap design.

      Okay. So buy yourself a set of these and put your life on the line. I checked my 3 ton stands and they failed. There was a lot of casting and weld slag on the teeth that would not allow full engagement. I had already decided that mine were going into the dumpster even before I found this video. I went searching the internet when I saw this. Mine are part of a Husky garage jack set that I got as a birthday gift several years ago and I had not even used them. I saw they were pretty cheap and decided to check them. I'm glad I did. Looks like the same Chinese company makes these stands and many mfrs. use them. I see that my garage jack set by Husky is now being sold by many brokers, possibly because they had to pay out a big lawsuit. The jack set I got is now down to around $55. Originally, they were intended to be sold for around $110. Smells like a big problem with these jack stands. The welds on the creeper that came with the Husky set broke and the creeper folded up the first time I used it and I weigh only 170 lbs. I should have suspected something about the overall quality of this set when that happened.
