So Many NOODLES: Air Itam LAKSA + SISTER CURRY MEE + Char Kway Teow | Penang's Noodles

  • Day 2 of the 5 part Penang series.
Today somehow turned into a noodle tour when I really didn’t even mean for it too!
Sister Curry Mee, these ladies have been serving up this dish since they were little girls. Now they may not be doing much of the dishing up, but they still bring their smiles to work every day.
Air Itam Laksa was up next for the legendary Penang Laksa. This was some unreal stuff. Not for the faint hearted taste buds as this bowl of Laksa is flavor packed. Spicy, sour, fishy, and a hint of sweetness round this bowl of pounded down flavor.
Back into Georgetown to cool down a little bit with some Ice Kacang. I went to this store which started as a humble street stall back in the 1920’s. A superb Ice Kacang, but I had to add my durian and I must say, I am just a cendol type of person. I missed my coconut milk and gula melaka.
Next up OO coffee house for some Penang white coffee and other noodle dishes. Now the beef noodles were disappointing, but the Char Kuay Teow really made up for the laking bowl of beef noodles.

Just a guy from Arkansas chasing his dreams of traveling the world, meeting amazing people, and trying all the delicious food I can find!
Recently finished working in Hong Kong. I am from a small farm in the states, I am now taking advantage and the opportunities I have to travel the world in search of some of the most delicious foods, unique places, and friendliest people.
A lover of street food, good laughs, and learning about other cultures. I hope to indulge in all these things and more as I bring you along with me on my epic journeys.

Air Itam, a small little area about 10-15 minutes outside Georgetown. I came up here a few times after this visit because it is surrounded by beautiful landscape, has good food with a history, and cheaper durian. Make sure to make the trip is you come to Georgetown.

Max McFarlin The souring agent in the laksa is assam. And the funkiness you were tasting probably comes from belacan (fermented shrimp paste), the blackish sauce which was there before you stirred them into the laksa broth.

6:43 the sour agent is tamarind base. its usually a mixed of asam keping which is a garcinia fruit plant and tamarind paste which is from the tamarind fruit.

The souring agent for asam laksa usually is Garcinia atroviridis, known as asam gelugur, asam gelugo, or asam keping is a large rainforest tree native to Peninsular Malaysia. This species grows wild throughout Peninsular Malaysia but is also widely cultivated, especially in the northern states, owing to its economic and medicinal value. Sometimes, tamarind can be use to. The fish use usually is sardine or tropical sea mackerel.

The Assam Laksa site always resonate to me because of Anthony Bourdain. 16 years or so ago when he made his maiden visit to Malaysia to film, I had the honour and privilege to attend a tea event with him in a KL hotel. Behind the scene, he is downright humble and soft spoken. I am glad you tried what he did that was served by the same owner.

Air (h)itam translates to "black water".
Reckon if I were to live in Georgetown, I'd be well over 300 pounds, too.
That Penang white coffee looks interesting. Ipoh coffee started when the Chinese couldn't afford a proper coffee roaster and would "roast" the beans in coconut oil in a hot wok. So kopi ipoh has a subtle coconut presence in the aroma and taste.
CKT is one of my favourite hawker dishes. Bad CKT is bad, don't get me wrong- I've had some shockers here in Australia. Decent CKT is great, but a great CKT is transcendent. I would crawl on hands and knees over broken glass for it. And there are multiple variants.
My favourite fruit in SEA is mangosteen, but the main season for them is June to August. Looks like a smallish grey-brown softball on the outside. Inside, the fruit is segmented like an orange, creamy-coloured and tastes like strawberries and cream. Don't get the purple liquid on your clothes, as it is there for life, and you'll have to wear off the layer of skin on your fingers!
Loving watching these videos. Can't wait to get back there!

Nowadays many famous street foods arent that tasty as they were in old times, some even decline in quality, a typical example is the Siam road Char Koey Teow, actually some hidden gems are even more worth trying, such as places that only the locals know, I am talking about this baby Char Koey Teow (WaHong Cafe) in Kampung Jawa, super flavourful flat noodles packed with aromatic WOK taste + big fresh fat sweet shrimp, make sure you try it next time, you wont regret it. Little tips: its portion is small, make sure you order extra koey teow & extra shrimp 😋

I had to crack up volume to hear to speak, but when the music hit, i think i broke my speakers a bit. Still I'm gonna subscribe cause i think you deserve more subs with the talent you showed.
