  • In this video, I will show you how to paint this beautiful countryside scene and I will give you some tips on mixing greens that you would typically find in the landscape.
    This painting is inspired by the Northland Region of New Zealand.
    This painting originally started as a plein air painting, and then I added more detail to it in the studio.
    Check out the written notes that accompany this video. Please feel free to use the reference photos if you would like to have a go at painting this.

    I know you like to finish up your plein air paintings with some detail back in the studio. I rather like your plein air paintings in their own right. Always a good view. Thanks.

      Thanks, I like both and it’s only more recently I’ve been adding more detail to my plein air paintings in the studio. Most of the time I leave my paintings as plein air paintings but just lately I’ve really been enjoying adding more detail to them in the studio 😊

    I just commented on another of your videos how your different mixes and values of green really creates depth and reality. It's your depiction of light that you create with those greens that give your painting so much depth and beauty. Your paintings glow. Beautiful work. And beautiful country side.

I live in the far north of New Zealand where it is more subtropical so lots of green fields, trees and palms. Me, Andrew and Freeman are planning on meeting up in the next couple of months for a plein air painting trip so that should be good. I think I’ll start including more footage of the local areas I’ll be painting for future videos 😊

    Samuel, I have big problem with ultramarine blue and since you are my go-to pigment expert I have dire need of your advice:
    I was painting bluebells the other day, and my ultramarine blue didn't seem to have strong enough chroma to make the bluebells stand out.
    It seems as though UMB is pretty weak in chroma, although dark, so when adding white, I loose the strength I need.
    What do you suggest I do? Would you agree that UMB is not very good to use when looking for high chroma blue, or might my brand of paint be the culprit?
    The brand is Beckers, and it is rather unknown these days, but is a premium brand, and even Zorn, the Swedish painter, was an avid user some 100 years ago.
    Kindly, if you have time, advise what to do about my high chroma blue issue.

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hello. Interesting, I have not painted bluebells but I growing up in England I am certainly familiar with what they look like. Chroma might not be the issue but the relationship between the other colours and values surrounding them. You could try mixing in a little quinacridone magenta and / or cobalt teal as well. I am thinking off the top of my head here.
      Ultramarine blue is probably the colour I use most on my palette (excluding titanium white) as it is so versatile. Don't forget it's a red shade blue. 😀
