The lyrics are in iambic pentameter, so it’s cool that Geoff chose to match the time signature to the natural cadence of the lyrics.

I always think that if it sounds like skipping, not the rope kind, the child kind, then it's 6/8, also think Viennese Waltz, which is 6/8, if that helps. I fully appeciate why the pauses happen to allow you to comment but, personally, having listened to it without pauses to start with, I like to share that experience with others if you see what I mean. As a whole thing he always builds and builds to make it a particular experience which is spoiled for me, and doubtless you too, by continually pausing. I hope that makes sense. I especially felt that with VoicePlays Hoist the Colours. it just loses so much by pausing it for comment. However, althoughI do understand why some feel it necessary, listening to it straight through is so much more of an emotional experience. Though seeing how excited you get this way perhaps you couldn't cope with more :)

Plus, your passion and enthusiasm is infectious!

You didn’t say anything but I’m guessing by your expressions that you realized that Geoff is now TEASING us a bit by giving a lead-up that makes us expect one of his super bass notes, only to just go on with the song. He’s freaking playing with us now! LOL

    • @kevintilander8554
      @kevintilander8554 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

Yes I completely agree. With a lot of his songs, it makes you feel like he’s teasing you for that bass note.

  • @barbarabishop9362

One of the things I most love about Geoff's solo work is that he builds in moments where he LOOKS AT HIS OTHER SELVES. I mean, we all know he isn't really there four times at once, but we just accept that he can nod approvingly at a good bit performed by one of his loops. It's actually funny as hell and no one EVER remarks on it.
As a complete aside, I need to say that Geoff's decision to grow his hair long was one of the best choices he ever made. The videos of him with short hair ... I barely notice him. He's a clean-cut, nice-looking young man, but bland, bland, bland... Tony's eyebrows catches more of my attention in those older videos. Or Earl's whiney tenor (which is fabulous in some songs, and fingernails on a blackboard in others, to my ears). Layne ... just ... I could listen to him all day but watching his mouth move when he's beatboxing just confuses the heck out of me. J None has a voice that ranks right up there, but I'm really glad they brought in Caesar as a permanent member - he's just an amazing fit. Yeah, I know I'm six months late to this video but I'm just cycling through some of your VP content and needed to say something.

Strongly agree on both Geoff interacting with the "Geoffettes" (Folsom Prison Blues and Way Down are *brilliant* examples of editing genius in this), and on Geoff growing his hair long! Can't believe he jokes about getting "old" when he literally looks better with long hair now than he did like 10 years ago with short hair (not that he ever looked bad, but you really nailed it in that had I known about Voiceplay in their early days, I probably would have glanced right over Geoff. But now? Hoo boy, hard to take my eyes off him honestly!)

OMG I love it when you absolutely geek out about Geoff. Especially for this because I think it's epic. I've watched this so many times I think I'm definitely obsessed. My favourite part is the a cappella in the middle. It's great that he uses all his range and of course his harmonies are to die for. His arrangements just get better & better. Shout out to Eli for the atmospheric lighting.

And just finished it, great reaction, as always. Don't worry about the pauses -- we'll go to Geoff's channel for the uninterrupted experience, as you say (as well we should, give him due respect for a great product). I mean, only other way you could get in your analysis is to 'save up' and talk longer when you do, which could get boring. Or maybe add visual text on the screen for some of the observations? I've seen that done to great effect, but it looks like a bear to edit. Whatever, your way is great, and it's what I keep coming back for! (Well, that, and to see if Mortimis might put in an appearance! When's she coming back here? Love hearing her take on things, too!) :)

Geoff does an amazing job with this one. With the timing change, octave catches, the Picardy 3rds he throws in there, the staccato steps, etc., he blows my mind! As soon as I saw your video pop up for this I went right to it. I KNEW you were gonna lose your sh*t! (In the best way possible, of course.) This is such an awesome arrangement, Geoff just keeps raising the bar he prevously sets, either in his solo work or in what he arranges for VP. I thoroughly enjoyed your R&A and always look forward to giggling at your giggling when you get to certain parts! I may listen to this all year through, like I already do with his and VP's Halloween offerings, it's just that perfect. All the best to you and yours this holiday season!

One of the reasons I love your reactions to Geoff is that you really appreciate all of the technique and, frankly, the beauty of his overall work. So many reactors get so locked into wowing over the incredibly deep bass notes that I feel like they miss a lot in the harmonies. Thanks for giving some love to what a fantastic overall singer and arranger this man is!

I am in the same boat, although have forgotten a lot of my music technical knowledge over the years, it's so much fun to watch someone get to break down and really talk about what makes it so cool. I love your reactions as you’re so open and expressive, and I love you pausing often to share what you find cool about an arrangement. It gives me better insight into what I’m enjoying and highlights moments that I might not otherwise have appreciated fully. And I find your reactions refreshing when it comes to Geoff’s work, because it isn’t just the low notes that you’re reacting to and appreciating. They’re great, but so is a lot of the other things Geoff does too, so I appreciate you melting at them (as we all do) but then giving equal weight to the other great stuff. 💚

Enjoyed all your observations of those little things that make it so enjoyable. I usually listen to music very casually - sort of in the background- but I find myself rewinding from time to time to try to dissect a part. It is all your fault! Ever since you did your analysis (blinded by textbooks) of Oogie Boogie I listen for little things like Eli’s plaintive notes there.
Peter was blown away too. So nice to know that uninformed me listens with the same enjoyment as you experts!
In a TOTALLY different way I recently enjoyed Home Free’s “Full of Good Cheer”. Lots and lots of fun.

    OH MY GOD! xD
I don't know if you're familiar with the musical theater commentary channel "Sideways", but he discussed that technique where the accompaniment drops out for a moment to emphasize the vocals in, I think, his Cats video? And he used the exact same moment from Danny Don't You Know as an example! So when you started talking about that technique and your favorite example of it, I was like "Is it gonna be...? No, there's no way, but wouldn't that be crazy--" AND THEN IT WAS!
And I mean it makes sense!! It's a pretty damn good example!

Love your reactions. I am an extremely amateur musician and singer. When I heard Geoff do the vocal scoop my first thought was it was a grace note. At least if I was playing it on an instrument that's how I would do it. Don't let the haters get you down. If they don't don't like the way you do this then find another channel. Personally I hate when people wait and then talk about something because I don't remember what it sounded like or just plain missed it. I want to hear about it as soon as it happens. I am used to taking music for granted and I love hearing about all the background nuances. ❤❤

Well, I was actually going to say you beat the time in two groups of three so 1, 2, 1, 2, with 3 notes for each beat not 6 beats separately But it amounts to the same thing. There is a name for this key signature [maybe 3/2] The emphasis Geoff made seemed to me a striking of the beats counted as 1, 2 in 3 note groups. (Which is why I mention it) BTW Waltz time - 3/4 is popular in music , too. Love your reactions. And each reaction brings something new to the appreciation of the music. Great comment about pausing. I like it. Thanks

Does anyone know if there's an audible difference between 6/8 and 12/8? Because I can see it written in 12/8 to keep the 4 beats per measure like the original version in 4/4, but I don't know if there's any difference between 6/8 and 12/8 when performing. Same way with 2/4 and 4/4

So I wanted to make one comment at the end, but you keep making me think of other things -- the mark of a good reactor! I wonder if there's a word for this: When Geoff harmonizes in those higher registers, he seems to prefer a certain set of notes, as here, with his Headless Horseman, Monster Mash, Sixteen Tons, etc. There's a similarity of harmonic intervals there, the note progressions of the parts he's singing. Is there a name for those notes he's choosing, as opposed to other notes in the chord he could have chosen? It's been years since I looked at any kind of musical theory, and I've forgotten more than I probably knew (if that's possible), but it feels like that's some category of 'shape'? Is that right?

10 months behind on the view, but I generally only like 3-5 pauses in a reaction for most reactors as they tend not to add anything. While you aren't as in-depth as Charismatic Voice, you do have something legitimate to add when you do pause to geek out about a facet of the work in general. We've probably already heard it, so it is nice to get a deeper understanding and thus gain a deeper appreciation of the work. Anyway, I hope you read old comments and know that you add value and not just mindless entertainment.

It feels kind of like 6/8 time. Takes a 2/2 and gives it rolling feel.

Btw my vote is for 12/8 - it feels like four main beats to the bar, rather than two (6/8) although it might have changed during the bell-like echoing middle section

Its a triplet fill so its fast 6/8 where i believe the 8th note gets the beat either that or the quarter note but as far as i know its the 8th note

What you are saying is a scoop is called a slur. I also think the time signature is 6/8. Geoff teases us by begging us to follow him down the path of a super subharmonic note, but he doesn’t. When he did go low was perfect timing.
