  • My AVX had a stiff RA axis; here’s what I did to re-grease it and adjust the tension to be silky smooth again.

Good presentation Ryan, I'm sure this will help me when I have a look at mine tomorrow! I've been looking for a solution to this for a while now.

Cheers for this, Ryan. I take it you can do the Dec too by following a similar procedure?

I experimented this evening and you can adjust the Dec tension by following a similar procedure. Thanks for the video Ryan, it’s been a big help!

I would think since it has grease in it now, that if you just loosened the ring a touch, it would take care of the problem and they would never know you fixed it by doing their job in the first place and you wouldn't have to worry about them canceling the warranty since they would never know.

Big needle nose in a pinch! But, good job. Those tools when you have a deeply recessed pin job are hard to find. Mickey Mouseing is a lost art I'm afraid...

hi from germany. i got mine avx today and both axis are very stiff. balancing impossible with small 360mm refractor. i will not send it back for maintenance but can i just loosen the tension rings a bit? or is it just the factory grease too much or bad from beginning in general? is there any more grease inside along the axis? i interprete the video that you didnt take all apart, correct?

Do you know what size of allen wrench you used.. I can not seem to get the grub screws to loosen.

Hi Ryan. Did you get a better guiding after your RA axis tension adjustment ? Thanks, Daniel.

Yes I would say so. I no longer have the gradual “drifting” and the oblong stars are much better... as long as there isn’t a gentle breeze. 🙄

Anyone knows how to solve on the EQ5? Bought my second hand and it's very stiff... I have no experience whatsoever.

Your mount was dried out because you live in Arizona (aka hell on earth).

It comes down to a $5. Power cable for a $2000. Mount makes celestron mounts useless garbage.
