  • Adventure Time really doesn't need an introduction. It is beloved by many and holds a strong fan base that is still more than active today waiting for the new iterations in the series to come out since they've been announced. Today, I wanted to take a look at the rise of Adventure Time and see the building blocks that lead to one of the biggest shows ever for Cartoon Network.

This and Avatar are easily the two best kids cartoons of all time to me. When I watch Adventure Time, I find myself admiring almost everything about it. There were points in the later seasons where it just flat out gave up on catering to children and had episodes more mature than 90% of adult television. It’s so creative and brilliant that I don’t think we’ll ever see anything like it again.

Regular Show just didn't have the writing adventure time had. Most Regular Show episodes have nothing as far as content goes. Mordecai and Rigby mention a thing immediately when the show starts, they find a way to get said thing, said thing goes crazy, everyone is mad at them about it, they fix the problem or its fixed for them, its a children's show from top to bottom. It doesn't have interesting characters outside if the handful of reoccurring ones, it doesn't have any interesting storylines, it doesn't have a sense of adventure, its rather boring honestly. I loved Regular Show when it first came out but once you've seen even a dozen episodes you've seen every possibility their formula can spit out. Regular show lore is shallow and most often not interesting, while Adventure Time fleshed out its many wacky characters masterfully.
Don't get me wrong guys, I don't think Regular Show is bad, I can even watch an episode or two nowadays and laugh at most of the jokes they tell, but you're comparing a hot pocket you ate to tide you over until dinner against a four course meal cooked by the third best chef on the planet.

    • @astronot8928
      @astronot8928 ปีที่แล้ว +3

I'd put them on par with each other, they both had specific elements that made them worthy of 5 stars. Regular Show's setting was more realistic, which made its scenarios more relatable compared to Adventure Time, which had a more whimsical fantasy setting that made you yearn for the next "adventure".

Adventure time will always have a special place in my heart. My brother and I are 10 years a part, so as you can imagine, quite a divide when I was teenager. AT was one of the only shows that we both loved watching together.
On a seperate note, some episodes speak to you on a deep level. The one that comes to mind is the 'hall of egress' for me. It draws parallels to life, where you cant really plan out a path, and when you do, things always change and makes you feel lost. In addition, the thought of going through life, making a small mistake, and being set back years is absolutely terrifying or having to separate yourself from your loved ones in order to progress through life. Its also terrifying to think that your problems have a simple solution that you dont see (the stone snowman) and have to endure a long journey due to your choices. idk...that episode gives me a sense of dread but also beauty

Adventure time has such a special place in my heart. It was the first show that I ever actively participated in an online fandom back in 2012 as a 14 y/o kid on deviantart. The episode that made me invested in the story was when the litch first appeared and the cake and fionna epsiode (as to why Im excited for the 2023 series). I remember drawing so much fanart and having such simple designs made drawing them in anime style the more flexible. This show really introduced me to the whole concept of online fandoms and basically shaped how Id interact with the media I consumed through all my teens and young adulthood.

This show has masterful character and world building. In the later seasons of the show, there are tons of super conceptually abstract episodes that focus entirely on different characters and parts of the world we’ve seen previously. It works because every character and piece of imagery in the show is valuable and has a story. It explores so many nuanced ideas, it doesn’t shy away from pain, death, sorrow, corruption, fear or any of the very real things that we all experience, and it doesn’t shy away from the affects that those things have on the characters of the show. I really don’t believe another show like this will exist again, but I’m just happy that this one does. This show has had a profound affect on me as both a child and adult, and it’ll remain one of my favorite shows forever

Imagine the weapons we could use in a Adventure Time open world game. I imagine that not only would we be able to use swords Finn uses in the show but also the swords Finn uses in the Adventure Time comics like the Blade of the Defender from issue 36, the Ribbon Sword and Dimension Sword from the season 11 comics and etc. I also imagine we would see characters from both shows and the comics. I mean think about it the Adventure time comics had some cool characters some of which I wonder who would voice actor for them be had they appeared in the show. Plus having both show and comic characters in the game would show newcomers how big the Land of Ooo really is beyond what the show showed

    • @NottherealLucifer

The problem is television studios are never willing to take the risk to put actual money into making a good video game. I mean, they're in an industry that never takes risks. We haven't even been able to get a high budget anime game more than once or twice in the last few decades despite that genre borrowing tropes and themes FROM video games more than any other. I've always thought an Avatar the Last Airbender open world game with character creation would also be dope but we'll never get that either

    • @randomguy7766
      @randomguy7766 ปีที่แล้ว

To be honest that sounds like an amazing game idea! It would take a lot of work to pull off though, as it would be super tough to manage to include every location and have them all feel substantial, but wow I want this now

@@NottherealLucifer what it really is, is that tv and film studios and ip owners still hang on to this idea that they are the superior medium. an elitism that has kept them from ever giving video games the proper time of day. in their minds they will make far more money and reach a far wider audience with tv and film than gaming ever would. now for a while during the decades gamming struggled to reach mainstream audiences, they were technically right. but for the last few years they could not be more wrong. as of right now the video game industry makes more money than tv, film, and music industries combined. by and large the biggest entertainment medium, all the while the biggest triple A titles with the largest budgets are still dwarfed by the amounts that get dumped into making blockbuster movies. which by default makes creating a game a far far far safer bet than a film. spend half a billion to make a movie that might fail to make back its cost, or spend 50 million to make a game that will dwarf the earnings of even the biggest films. the only thing stopping them is their own elitism and hubris.
for comparison, the highly anticipated star wars episode 7 spent about half a billion, 300 million to produce 200 million to market it, and made about 2 billion all in all. it was highly anticipated, and liked (at the time anyway) upon release from one of the biggest franchises in human history (at the time anyway... clearly dead now) so it profited Disney 1.5 billion a great deal of which got dumped into the crap that would come later. but either way it was a big success as a film, and the 5th highest grossing film of all time.
in STARK contrast genshin impact one of the most expensive games ever produced, a free to play game with no accompanying ticket sales cost about 300 million, 100 to produce 200 to market it, its a niche gatcha game made by an until then completely unknown company, for a niche audience. no film producer would ever back it. in just two year it made 3.7 billion. this failed to break the top 100 highest grossing games of all time.
the profit margins between games and all other media aren't even remotely close. again comparing franchises, star wars formerly the biggest and most well known franchise on earth, since 1977 has made about 50 billion, and thats including everything, with all 9 nine main films in the top 20 highest grossing films of all time (literally half the list) and their own books and video games and toys. pokemon however, while well known to gamers, is not known by everyone a somewhat niche rpg series, including only main line games NOT merch, cards, or side games, their own movie, JUST the main line games. have made just shy of 1 trillion. film and tv are but ants to the video game industry at this point. the only reason the tie ins are so bad or low effort is tv and films own elitist hubris. they sit on their rock thinking themselves to still be the king while ignoring the wider world around them.

Imo Adventure Time is one of the best animated shows ever made and has a way of telling stories and covering dark or deep topics incredibly well, all of the lessons learned thru the show have stuck with me. I have the Enchiridion version of the complete series and they really put some love into it and even as a full grown adult I go back to it's pages to watch an episode or two every now and then.

I think I read something when it was coming to an end that Cartoon Network always had trouble marketing the show because it didn't have a set demographic they could target so despite it's huge success. They'd been wanting to cancel it for a long time. But it didn't make sense to until a small dip in popularity would naturally come.
So if thats true then its mass appeal was literally it's undoing
In a sense it's like saying it was cancelled for being too good 😅

Usually people credit lord of the rings, Conan the barbarian, or even game of thrones with getting them into fantasy and dnd. I've always lacked an opinion on the show, but over some years I had a family and I have to say... this is the golden family show. A gem in a sea of glass, seriously. You get a lot of adult humor and I find myself laughing more than the kids do. I'm also clearly invested in the character stories and development while they sit happily laughing at funny stretchy dog fart. If you're having trouble finding a show for your kid that
    1 - won't drive you insane
2 - will entertain the kids
Then I highly recommend giving this one a shot. 👍

What i love from Finn is that personality wise he's never the same in earlier seasons he was hot head and more of a punch first talk later type of boy and then he get into alot of romance drama easily fell in love with literally every female in ooo and then he met Flame Princess and the Drama is getting more intense from PB's extreme jealousy towards FP to Finn suddenly he become so possesive of her and ofc the fire vs ice which is cruelest thing Finn ever did, i think all of that was because of both finn and Jake's misunderstanding but Jake takes more of the blame since he the one who told finn to get FP and Simon to kill eachother but the thing is he keeps learning from his mistakes and try to be better each seasons it makes him more alive

Mainly I remember how this was right after CN Real. After chowder, Flapjack and all that ended, they implemented CN Real. Then all of a sudden there were the promos of a kid dressed up as Finn, yelling "Adventure Time" into a bullhorn or whatever. It didn't say what is was going to be like, and I wasn't sure if it was even going to be animated. I watched the premiere, hyped that it was an actual cartoon.

The post apocalyptic war thing is also such an amazing lore that absolutely fascinates me. • @mortalitydoesstuff8965

The golden age of Cartoon Network, to put it simply, understood that the kids that were gonna be attracted to this and other shows were just as much their own people as the adults that would also enjoy it. That allowed them to explore all the dark and complex themes that they did from the lens of a real kid still having real human shit to deal with, while in the case of Adventure Time also living in the magical post-apocalypse, and in fantastical versions of the real world in others. That fact alone is half the reason for the success of Adventure Time and Cartoon Network at the time. It really surprises me that Nickelodeon didn't pick up a show like that considering they had Avatar, which was already a show that was very aware of its audience in a similar way.

Mr. Death: “So Finn, ready to settle into the 37th?”
    *Finn looks over at Jake*
*Jake smiles and gives a thumbs up*
*Finn gets a look of uncertainty on his face*
“Yeah about that, Jake when you left, I kind of freaked out, it was the worst thing to ever happen to me”
“Oh come on you still had plenty of other things to live for right?”
“Yeah but deep down, I just kept waiting for day I would finally see you again”
*Jake looks down at the ground with a frown on his face and says in a sad depressing voice “oh”*
*Finn takes a deep breath in*
“Mr. Death, I want to go back”
*Mr. Death nods his head and snaps his fingers*
*A portal opens behind Finn and Jake and they briefly glance at it*
As Jake playfully punch’s Finn Jake says: “Proud of you bro”
As Finn kneels down to pick up Jake and hug him Finn says: “thanks bro”
*Jake starts to glow and shape into a star as he floats up*
“You’ll be ready for the 50th before you know it, go back there and live that best life”
*Finn looks up as he smiles at Jake then walks away to the portal and steps through it*
*As Finn walks through the portal Jake starts to hold back tears and turns back into his normal dog form*
*Jake falls next to Mr. Death*
*Jake with tears in his eyes runs after Finn*
Mr. Death says: “No wait, ah I’m not your mom”
*Finn now flying through the portal to be incarcerated with a smile on his face*
“I wonder what life’s going to turn me into this time?”
*Finn feels a hand grab his wrist, he looks over*
“Jake?! What are you doing, I just had my adonkin epiphany.”
“I know, I’m just coming back for fun, because it’s great being alive with you”
*Finn grows a smile on his face and tears up and sniffles*
    “Hahahaha, Good reason”
    *Fist bump*
    - Jake and Finn together forever.
