One unusual aspect of the plot concerns the romantic triangle. Instead of the stereotype where the "other woman" is a monster, here she is a normal, kind, goodhearted soul who bows out gracefully as she realizes that this isn't the life for her but is for him and that he still loves his estranged wife. It adds some dimension to the central relationship that the competition isn't portrayed as a shrew. I really appreciated this twist on what we generally see in similar plots. 👍

She’s possibly my favourite part about this movie because it’s such a refreshing change. The acting is fantastic. And she’s a great stand-in for the audience as they keep explaining things to ‘her.’

    • @cloudsn

Exactly. They stayed away from the lazy, tired stereotype of the new love interest. It would have been easy to have Joe and Melissa fighting the whole movie, instead Melissa is extremely human and relatable. She's a therapist and very self aware, so she quickly figures out the situation and leaves gracefully.

I don't think many people understand the power and devastation of a tornado. In that regard, they get surprised by Twister (not that it is 100% accurate, but close enough). And thank goodness people don't know, because I've never been more terrified than when one went through our house. Fortunately, we were safe in the basement. Its also quite surreal in how they move, destroying one home and weaving around your neighbors next door.

I remember reading somewhere that like 70% of Philip Seymour Hoffman's lines were ad libbed. Apparently he kept modifying his lines that Jan De Bont basically just shot different takes with whatever he came up with. He became a character that in the beginning you went "How is this guy even part of this science team?".... then by the end your going "I LOVE THAT GUY!!!"
Was a great movie on so many level. This was my favorite movie and have no shame saying I saw this 3 times in theaters when it first came out back in '96.
Also made me want to purchase my first truck which was a '98 Ram 1500 Quad Cab.

When they weren't filming, the actors and crew stayed at the hotel across the street from me and all the vehicles were parked at the grocery store behind my house. I used to walk over and look and touch the vehicles all the time. So crazy... So personal. I can't wait to see the new one.

27:42 Not gonna lie, the scene they pulled up into is incredibly lucky. A tornado of that strength can leave multiple blocks unrecognizable. They could still navigate and find Aunt Meg’s, in time to rescue her. Nobody thinks about how important street signs and other landmarks (trees, houses, etc.) are until they’re not there anymore.

Yes Michael Crichton always did massive research so it's hard to tell where the science ends and the fiction begins . Interesting story about his book on climate change was that he went into it believing the concept was bollocks and the bad guys would be the ones claiming it existed. Then he did his research and went "oh shit", completely reversing the good guys and the bad guys.

Here in Edmonton, we had a notable storm in 1987 that included a series of tornadoes that hit multiple neighborhoods in town. That storm had the hardest rain, the strongest wind and the scariest and most beautiful clouds I've ever seen. And my grandmother in Oklahoma had a tornado cellar in the front yard of her farm. On visits there in the summer, we always half-expected to see one but we never did.

  • @adaddinsane

This is where I say that the UK has more tornadoes per square inch than any other country - except they never last and are never bad. Except the two worst (not even close in scale to the ones in the US) in the last twenty years both happened near me. I was on the motorway near Birmingham in 2005, I saw the sky and the weird way the wind was blowing, and went "oh shit" and drove away as fast as I could. (Thank goodness for this movie.) It destroyed a small area of houses. Then just last year one went through my local area at night. A fair track of damage but it missed us by a couple of hundred yards.
Honestly I love this movie, and it's endlessly rewatchable.

As much as I love this movie, it's nothing like going through the real thing. This past May, the town I live in here in Ohio was hit by an EF1 tornado with winds of 111 MPH. I was working from home and upstairs in my home office. About a half hour before the storm hit, it started to get dark outside with almost constant rumbling of thunder. About 4PM, the rain started to come down hard, and the wind picked up. I realized it was getting bad as the call I was on dropped when my internet/cable went out followed by the power. At that point, the house was shaking so bad that my computer displays were literally moving. The sirens hadn't gone off yet. I looked out my one window facing the west, and there was a wall of horizontal rain a couple houses away from my house, and the trees were leaning about a third of the way over. Realizing I needed to head to the basement, I grabbed my cat's carrier, ran downstairs, got him in it, and texted my manager down in Columbus that I was heading to the basement for shelter from the storm. It was at that point that it suddenly got quiet as the storm was past us. Then the sirens came on. As for how close I was to the actual tornado, about five houses up the street from my house was where the south edge of the damage path started. My neighbor across the street from me has a flagpole in her front yard that is still bent over at an angle from the wind. Amazingly no damage to my place. Fortunately, I have a backup generator that kept my refrigerator running, and power came back on about 13 hours after the storm.

I believe the house that survives at the end was shot in Iowa, and my uncle worked with the film crew when they were scouting special effects locations in the county fairgrounds in my city were under consideration. we get tornadoes every year mainly in spring and summer. Most of the time they just take out some trees or an old barn but unreal occasions they do more damage. There is a small town that was devastated about 15 years ago by a tornadoes. A lot of houses in the high school in town were destroyed. I saw a tornado from about a mile and a half away when I was a small boy before running downstairs to the basement

I grew up in "tornado alley". I've never actually saw a tornado...but did hear one going overhead in the dark. In 2011 I did go to Joplin MO to assist with cleanup the weekend after the F5 that hit that city. Finger of God indeed! At ground zero there was a path almost a mile wide that went for several miles where there was NOTHIING higher than 3 feet. I've never seen destruction like that and hope to never see the like again. I have always enjoyed this movie even though there are a few things that stretch the imagination. SGI did a lot of work on the digital effects and supplied computer gear for both teams of storm chasers, which is why we all got a free screening. We loved a little inside joke: Jonas's team had beautiful new SGI computers and monitors; Jo's team's gear was all beat up, and the Silicon Graphics logos were broken off and replaced with the company name in masking tape. Those twisters over the lake were probably waterspouts, not as powerful as a tornado, but can still be lethal in the right setting.

Growing up in Miami, I've been through several hurricanes, one being a Category 4. I was visiting my mother when Hurricane 🌀 Andrew hit. It felt like it wanted to get into our house. My sister's best friend's husband was killed. Andrew was tearing their house apart and they had to get out. He was hit by flying debris. Hurricanes are known to spawn tornadoes. A new community called Country Walk was totally destroyed. The only house left standing was a nearby farm house that was built in the 1920s.

Here's a somewhat obscure movie of Paxton in 2024. A Simple Plan, with Bill and Billy Bob Thornton. It's a drama and not thrilling or exciting, so maybe you may not dig it, but it's a twisty story with deep terrible consequences and some great acting and you may cry. Another Paxton movie that I'm sure others will mention is Frailty, which is a movie he directed and starred in. Dark horror with a twist and a shocking subject matter

That was an amazing reaction! Thank you so much for watching this icon! Believe it or not, they actually interviewed 2 people who actually were in the middle of the tornado and survived. So everything Bill and Jo saw were exactly as the survivors described it. Helen Hunt has also been in these films: Quarterback Princess, based on true story about a girl being a kicker on all boys football team, and Soul Surfer, which based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton’s shark attack and overcoming her obstacles to get back in the water. If you loved Phillip Seymour as Dusty, you’ve got to see him in The Hunger Games film series. If you want more natural disaster films I recommend Dante’s Peak and Volcano. 👩🏼👨🏻🌪

I live in Michigan now but when I was a kid, my family and I lived in Oklahoma for 3 years from 1988 until 1991 when we came back to Michigan. My father had a job offer in the Tulsa area. Oklahoma is in 2nd place as far as number of tornadoes per season. Texas is number 1. When we moved to Oklahoma it was in the Spring, (March);right at the start of tornado season, and 1988 was a year that saw some epic storms that dropped DOZENS of tornadoes just in Tulsa county alone. It was scary but exciting at the same time as I have always been fascinated by powerful storms.

Depending on the location mountains can have tornados, I remember one that touched down briefly in Golden, Colorado which has mountains going up on the west side of town and 400-600 foot tall mesas on the other three sides. There have been a couple in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Billings, Montana. There have been some in broken/mountainous terrain from Western Tennessee, across Southern Kentucky, West Virginia, Western Virginia, Western North Carolina, and Northern Georgia. These are usually smaller and short-lived but can still do some damage.

    Chandra & Jordan
Jan de Bont, director wanted Helen Hunt for this movie as studio did not because she was unknown as movie actress even though Helen is known for her TV experience. Jan hired Josh Whedon to polish up the script. He added "Cow" "Another cow" "I believe it is same cow" Because storm consultant informed Jan photo of a cow in a tree alive after animal went in the tree from a tornado. Jan thought photo was fake, but scientist informed him that photo is real.

Such a great cast. This film really gets the emotional punches right. Helen Hunt is incredible, I recommend As Good As It Gets with Jack Nicholson which won Oscars. This is my fave Philip Seymour Hoffman performance, and I hope that some of his own real character was in Dusty somewhere. I also adore Lois Smith (Aunt Meg) in absolutely everything she does (Minority Report).
Seeing this at the cinema at release was incredible. I love the sound design for the twisters as they have this deep almost animalistic roar.
Definitely one that exceeds its online rankings.
