The Klan was clearly active in that part of Mississippi (and there was nothing preventing them from coming in from another part of the state or another state altogether even if the they weren't, which they were) and Eastland was one of the top leaders of the White Citizens' Council, a fact I assume he would've publicized pretty widely.
They say hindsight is 20/20. Today we know that everyone who said back then, it was a publicity stunt, the kids weren't really missing, they were hiding. We now know that those people were complicit in their murders. This includes the senator speaking on the line.
Two bull-headed old Southerners circling and testing each other, with colorful pleasantries ("When you get through using that rain in Mississsippi, send some over to Texas") thrown in to keep it cordial. One of the great ironies of American history that a Southern Democrat like LBJ was responsible for the two great legislative milestones securing legal rights for Black Americans. And he did it by amiably crossing segregationsts like Eastland. And they probably remained friends.

Most Southerners don't consider Texas to be Southern. Geographically it's in the south of course. Culturally, it's quite different. Texas is Texas. When we Southerners refer to the South we mean generally mean the Southeast as well as Arkansas and Louisiana. Texas is more western than Southern.

Texas is just as southern as any other state in Dixie they just have more of a western type of style. If you watch the footage when Jfk arrived in Dallas he was greeted to several confederate flags and very few American flags.
