Fun fact. The reason Kyoko has a lot of hands in a bunch of her transfromations is because her wish "I want people to listen to my father" gave her the power of essentially Shadow Clones "followers" that do whatever she says. However she loses this power sometime before the main story that we know... What I find kind of sad is that Madoka’s wish was never truly granted, even though she sacrificed herself. In the timeline in which she has erased herself and is the god of her world, it’s revealed that they don’t fight witches, they fight something else that I don’t remember, but it can still put their lives in danger. Wasn’t the point of madoka’s wish so that her friends- and every magical girl for that matter- are safe and never have to worry? And what’s more, even in other timelines and events that are presumed and confirmed to take place after madoka magica, they still have to fight monsters. Their lives are still in danger.
You're talking about wraiths, which is kinda the predecessor of witches. This shows how naive Madoka was. Her wish was to erase the existence of all witches only. And she actually got the wish, by becoming the law of the cycle and preventing any magical girl from becoming a witch in the first place. The wraiths are different though. They still exist.
Yeah... she basically put a sopping wet bandaid on the problem. The reason why a dark being has to be fought is because the Kyuubei want to stop entropy. I think that's the whole point of the show and part of the tragedy of it all. Because the main targets are preteen girls who (mostly) only think with their emotions solely to benefit themselves, they are incapable of seeing the bigger picture. Instead of Madoka saying, "This is happening because of entropy? Let me wish entropy didn't exist or wish there was a free and easy power supply", she got caught up in the "You're doing this to these poor girls! Let me stop that". The Kyuubei (unfortunately) were geniuses by deciding to use preteen girls!
I think the main point was to rid the world of the corrupting force of the Witches. It wasn't JUST that her friends were in danger or could die. It was the existential horror of realizing that one moment they could "fall into despair", totally corrupting everything about themselves, and hurting those they love. It's shown many times that becoming a witch is considered a fate worse than death itself. But the only only way to fight Witches is to use your magical powers... Which can corrupt you into a Witch. And the only way to heal that is by using a Witch's Grief Seed (basically their corrupted soul gems). So it just becomes a vicious cycle of magical girls becoming witches and then needing to defeat witches to stave off the existential horror barreling in their direction... It's horrifying. I personally think Madoka's wish was sound, it's just really weird how it didn't also get Homura? I know that could probably be down to how she worded it: "get rid of every witch that was born or will ever be born" which I guess leaves the loophole of "what if a witch was a witch but was never truly "born"...... But Homura DID become a witch eventually??? I just don't get it man.

Madoka Magica is awesome! Because - Short but great and beautiful transformations - Symbolism is used cleverly - FEELS - It is dark, which is why I like it, but it’s not super dark so I can still let myself watch it. - A character that actually uses realistic guns and bombs! The weebs in my class are literally just full on shōnen including the girls! But I can’t bring myself to shame for being a MadoMagi fan, it’s too beautiful.

It's just occurred to me that in Madokas transformation the other Madoka kisses her and grants her her magical girl abilities, it's literally all the previous incarnations giving her their power to grant this one final wish and save all her friends forever... Holy shit
I like how in a lot of these transformation you get hints of their witch form but not from madoka, and none of her timeline. She turns into a witch except for one and that was the culmination of all the despair she took upon herself in order for the magical girls to have true happiness. And even seeing the magical girls happy gave her enough strength to never succumb to despair and destroy her own which form. form.
Weird theory: what if Homura’s illness that she suffered from before the series began was actually cured because the only member of her family left to take care of her was a magical girl who used her wish to cure Homura only to turn into a witch soon after.
One of the main reasons I watched this show was because I saw videos of these witches and their labyrinths and found them so abstract. Definitely a very creative take on witches on these shows.
9:14 it was cool to use the string as the representation of the godhood that she stripped from madoka , because its shows that all the different timelines connected on her from the series and that they all for together into the god version
+Nol Glemsel I've come to a similar conclusion, though funnily enough, I usually swap which person is actually representing Homura; I usually replace Madoka throughout the opening with Homura in my head, with the naked scene being the only time where Madoka shows up. In fact, there's even a cool video where somebody animated this directly - search on TH-cam, "Puella Magi Homura Magica" it should be the first option.
IMO it symbolizes the fact that Madoka's karma is what makes her powerful, and it's a more "mature" Madoka from a previous timeline that gives her magical powers to this Madoka. Madoka. Madokaseption.
When I first saw madoka rebellion I thought their transformations were strange at the start. There's an unusual, witch labyrinth vibe to them. Also, i like sakura's transformation music, it has this tone to it that i find really badbeans.😊

In the late 20XX era, Madoka literally became a concept to end the suffering of Magical Girls. As such, she ascended into a realm of gods, deities, over-deities alike, & to administer to the system of Magical Girls from within in. Should anything befall them, Homura Akemi is her herald to act on such matters unless it is something serious. The lore was referenced in many worlds from the 19XX-20XX describing how Kriemhild Gretchen and Penitent Gretchen are aspects of herself as a concept. Kriemhild was rumored to be a harbinger of the end & that Penitent is a bringer of heaven. A couple comparisons to few worlds like the Mega Man & Toku worlds who had such comparisons only in whispers by most others. A certain Old Spice Man's commercial starring Madoka. She giggled after watching it with her baby brother. Her friends had different reactions, though. Kyoko laughed raucously at the ridiculousness. Mami smiled at its silliness. Sayaka and Homura agreed that it was insulting to Madoka as it also promoted Kyubey. Said Incubator was amused and hoped to use this to lure girls into making Contracts but was…forcibly prevented. Charlotte…turned away in shame, as cake was why she ended up a Witch in the first place. Funny enough, Beerus like God-Emperor of Mankind got along well with Madoka. She scares half of the villainous factions when she makes her own Giga Drill Break & Simon cried tears of joy. Madoka has started exploring different fields & hobbies; so far, she seems to have settled on ballet after a entire story arc.
Did you ever imagine a crossover between "Manhunt" and "Madoka Magica" ? Just imagine for a moment. A girl who is told by Kyubey that the evil behind the city is all being caused by the witches. But as the story progresses, and the more time the girl spends with the protagonist, seeing how the city's evil was also caused by humans alone, there's a point in which she just gives up, and after Lionel's demise, she becomes a witch continuing on his job, and her executioner is none other than Kyoko, the girl who represents humanity's greed.
Madoka also became a witch.. When Homura and Madoka fought Walpurgisnacht and won, but they were both going to die and become witches, yet Madoka had a grief seed and used it on Homura, which is when Madoka became a witch afterwards and Homura wen back in time to save Madoka from making a wish and becoming a Magical Girl.
But this time Madoka asked Homura to kill her before she becomes a witch as her last wish before diyng and Homura going back in time again. Madoka turned into a witch in other timelines, like the second timeline and one of the last ones when she was getting more and more powerful because of Homura's time travel.

while i'm a sucker for dark and disturbed magical girls like homura/akuhomu, rebellion's "reason" for homura's corruption left a bitter taste in my mouth. like most people, i was confused at first and needed about 3-4 rewatches (not all at once of ofc LOL) to fully digest everything here's an attempt at a "simplified" breakdown: taking the first and last 2 letters of the japanese romanization of "MAhou shouJO" --> MAJO = magical girl --> witch soul gem = magical girl = born from hope/wishing grief seed = witch = born from despair homura's dark orb = devil = born from love (or more specifically, her "love" for madoka) i put the word "love" in quotations because homura's "love" for madoka is clearly obsessive to the point of corruption and is very much one-sided/selfish. she's turned her pain amd despair from all those timelines into pleasure as a sort of coping mechanism, eventually driving her motivations. throughout rebellion, homura gets a small taste of being with madoka again up until the big reveal, finally pushing her OWN self (as she created this "fake mitakihara") to the edge. while in her labyrinth, homura convinces herself that madoka secretly wishes to be freed of her duty as the one who fulfills "the law of cycles". it's sort of ambiguous whether real madoka and homura's "madoka" are the same, but while i'm inclined to believe homura's madoka is more or less telling her what she wants to hear (this is homura's OWN labyrinth, after all), homura's madoka may or may not be madokami without her memories of being madokami (i kind of forgot how she ended up in homura's labyrinth to begin with, but i'm sure she had help from sayaka and nagisa aka "her personal assistants"). after her transformation into akuhomu, homura no longer cares about madoka's wishes and decides to trap her in a world of her own creation against her will because she "loves" her. in her mind, she's "saving" madoka from her responsibility as a god AND making it so that she can be with her again. her corrupted soul gem becomes something we've never seen before, apparently called a "dark orb", and is created from these incredibly strong emotions. remember, it was a side affect of madoka's wish that made her become a godlike concept/law of the universe and thus, without a physical/human form. while madoka did say she was now "everywhere at every time", this just isn't enough to satisfy homura. at some point after the anime's ending, homura comes to this realization and ALMOST succumbs to her despair after being unable to accept madoka's sacrifice. right before she is to become a witch, kyuubey intervenes by isolating her and her soul gem, to see what would happen to a soul gem on the brink of corruption, BEFORE the law of cycles takes it away. at the same time, he could analyze the law of cycles and find a way to control it somehow. remember, the anime's ending shows that homura reveals to kyuubey the truth of the world that existed BEFORE the law of cycles came to be. homura believes herself to be the only one that remembers it, and doesn't realize kyuubey would become intrigued enough to act upon her revelations to him. while homura and her soul gem are being "incubated", she turns into a witch WITHIN her own soul gem, as she is unable to be taken away by the law of cycles, but is also unable to fully "hatch" into a witch as a result of being "incubated" (this part is a bit tricky to understand). witches technically STILL exist as a concept, with madokami working in the past, present, and future to erase them before they are born. but if for some reason, madokami cannot get to a soul gem that is on the verge of witchhood, how can she erase them? kyuubey wants to find out, and uses homura to lure madokami to him. BASICALLY, chaos ensues after homura shuts herself in an alternate world she's created within herself while waiting for madokami to take her away with the law of cycles (thanks to kyuubey isolating/incubating her). here is a quick timeline: ALMOST succumbs to despair, soul gem now on the brink --> kyuubey isolates her JUST before law of cycles can reach her --> succumbs to despair while in isolation --> becomes a witch within her soul gem --> unknowingly creates a labyrinth reflecting the "perfect" world she desires --> "lives" in the labyrinth with "madoka" --> realizes she's in a labyrinth --> realizes she's in HER labyrinth, becoming self aware and realizing nothing is "real" --> decides she wants nothing more than to be with madoka after convincing herself that madoka doesn't actually want to be madokami with her newfound self awareness, while waiting for madokami to end her "suffering" through the law of cycles, homura grabs and stops her before she can. if a corrupted soul gem --> grief seed = despair then a corrupted soul gem --> dark orb = "love" and so, akuhomu is born! she breaks her OWN corrupted soul gem so that it can transform not into a grief seed, but a "dark orb" thanks to her "love" for madoka. she is an anomoly in every way, having successfully managed to turn her pain/despair into pleasure so that she doesn't succumb to it. unfortunately, she doesn't retain any of her sanity in the process. after she decides she cannot TRULY be with madoka unless she is stripped from her responsibility as god, she splits madoka in two, effectively separating her from her godhood. now that there is no god, she can rewrite the laws of the universe yet again (as madoka had done so earlier) so that it may bend to her will. homura takes over and becomes the ruler of this new world, meaning madoka is probably trapped unless homura HERSELF decides to release her. despite claiming she "loves" madoka, she also acknowledges they are enemies. while destroying everything madoka worked so hard for shows how little homura actually understands her (altho she superficially retains some of it), homura herself is aware of this discrepancy, knowing they are opposites that cannot coexist. what they represent is far beyond themselves, both having lost their humanity in completely different ways and for different reasons. according to the wiki, madoka is the embodiment of hope (selfless love), while homura is the embodiment of despair (selfish love). the reason kyuubey cannot comprehend what homura has become is because he cannot turly understand love in any of its forms. even with hope and despair, he sees them as black and white formulas/concepts, and isn't capable of sympathizing with the girls at any point he's with them. but then you have an emotion like love, with so many forms and layers, it is simply far too complex for him to even have factored it into the equation. as distorted as homura's "love" is, it's still "love" (albeit a selfish one). her "love" is, arguably, the strongest there is. td;lr homura "loves" madoka and became a witch within herself, and a "devil" in real life, by turning her pain/despair into pleasure. this "love" however, leans toward obsession and selfishness and caused her to remove madoka from the part that made her godlike so that they can be together again. thanks to kyuubey's meddling, homura basically "killed" god because she "loves" her. also she's crazy and idk how to feel about it.
Something over noticed upon rewatching all these is that in the Blu-ray versions for Mami’s 3rd transformation she uses her school uniforms ribbon to create her corset and Kyoko throws the sticks she had in her mouth at the camera. They’re both a real blink and you miss it but you can see they were animated :D
Homura was actually the true hero in the ending of Rebellion, because in the ending they appeared in a "desert" (probably a city ceasing with all life due to Madoka's wish of killing all witches and ending the suffering to all Magical girls from every timeline Past, Present, Future. All of them.) And in this case, Homura brought back the balance and for that she became the demon god for imprisoning another god-like being. After all this time, her wish was still not granted. All she wanted to do was to protect Modoka. Change her fate, and maybe the other girls as well. If they do make a sequel to Rebellion, I like to see what will happen next. Will Madoka regain her memories, and jogging back the other's memories, or will it be Kyubey making them remember what Homura did? And if they do, then they will be facing a powerful enemy but only seeing that Homura was realizing that her perfect world not only flawed but felt empty with fake happiness. Though if Homura was defeated. It would end her suffering from something that was impossible. She is tearing herself apart trying to cease the never-ending pain. Although, unless they introduce a new magical girl she might be able to fix things. like her granting the wish to heal others physically, mentally, internally, and emotionally. The ability to help save someone from trying to die. Maybe Homura's family might help her. If... her family is there at least that is. I am leaping too many conclusions and theories on this. Maybe, just maybe, that demon raccoon thing will burn. Reason why is because Kyubey started this mess by convincing the girls to make contracts with them. And it's cute appearance is probably a disguise of what is really under Kyubey. At one point, Homura might've seen the true nature under that appearance of Kybey. being they might be a different race of witches. Or worse, space demons. And that they sold their soul to be consumed once they are dead after turning them into colorful things of jewelry.
I feel the only person who got did dirty was Homura. She wished to protect Madoka, failed so many times and the last time,, Madoka completely dips on staying with Homura, and becomes a god. She then became a witch and realized that nothing she did ever had meaning. Sad Homura, though

The Kyuubei (unfortunately) were geniuses by deciding to use preteen girls!
no? the point was for them to not be condemned to eternal suffering after they died

Because
- Short but great and beautiful transformations
- Symbolism is used cleverly
- FEELS
- It is dark, which is why I like it, but it’s not super dark so I can still let myself watch it.
- A character that actually uses realistic guns and bombs! (There are many more reasons why Homura is best girl, this is only one of them)
- Great music
- I feel embarrassed and a bit ashamed for being the only magical girl fan in my class other than my best friend but that’s only because I introduced her to Madoka Magica and she’s not really that big on magical girls. The weebs in my class are literally just full on shōnen including the girls! But I can’t bring myself to shame for being a MadoMagi fan, it’s too beautiful.

ash ketchup Yep.

It's very likely that it's actually Homura with pink hair, given the symbolism.
Madoka. Madokaseption.

try reading some of the spin off mangas-
In the late 20XX era, Madoka literally became a concept to end the suffering of Magical Girls.
Thanks for this

Well, Madoka Magica does fall under the genre of paychological horror.
For the people who might think Glitter Force/Smile Precure copied Madoka Magica's scene after the transformations, I think they actually got inspired.

Madoka turned into a witch in other timelines, like the second timeline and one of the last ones when she was getting more and more powerful because of Homura's time travel.

while i'm a sucker for dark and disturbed magical girls like homura/akuhomu, rebellion's "reason" for homura's corruption left a bitter taste in my mouth. like most people, i was confused at first and needed about 3-4 rewatches (not all at once of ofc LOL) to fully digest everything
here's an attempt at a "simplified" breakdown:
taking the first and last 2 letters of the japanese romanization of "MAhou shouJO" --> MAJO = magical girl --> witch
soul gem = magical girl = born from hope/wishing
grief seed = witch = born from despair
homura's dark orb = devil = born from love (or more specifically, her "love" for madoka)
i put the word "love" in quotations because homura's "love" for madoka is clearly obsessive to the point of corruption and is very much one-sided/selfish. she's turned her pain amd despair from all those timelines into pleasure as a sort of coping mechanism, eventually driving her motivations. throughout rebellion, homura gets a small taste of being with madoka again up until the big reveal, finally pushing her OWN self (as she created this "fake mitakihara") to the edge. while in her labyrinth, homura convinces herself that madoka secretly wishes to be freed of her duty as the one who fulfills "the law of cycles". it's sort of ambiguous whether real madoka and homura's "madoka" are the same, but while i'm inclined to believe homura's madoka is more or less telling her what she wants to hear (this is homura's OWN labyrinth, after all), homura's madoka may or may not be madokami without her memories of being madokami (i kind of forgot how she ended up in homura's labyrinth to begin with, but i'm sure she had help from sayaka and nagisa aka "her personal assistants"). after her transformation into akuhomu, homura no longer cares about madoka's wishes and decides to trap her in a world of her own creation against her will because she "loves" her. in her mind, she's "saving" madoka from her responsibility as a god AND making it so that she can be with her again. her corrupted soul gem becomes something we've never seen before, apparently called a "dark orb", and is created from these incredibly strong emotions.
remember, it was a side affect of madoka's wish that made her become a godlike concept/law of the universe and thus, without a physical/human form. while madoka did say she was now "everywhere at every time", this just isn't enough to satisfy homura. at some point after the anime's ending, homura comes to this realization and ALMOST succumbs to her despair after being unable to accept madoka's sacrifice. right before she is to become a witch, kyuubey intervenes by isolating her and her soul gem, to see what would happen to a soul gem on the brink of corruption, BEFORE the law of cycles takes it away. at the same time, he could analyze the law of cycles and find a way to control it somehow. remember, the anime's ending shows that homura reveals to kyuubey the truth of the world that existed BEFORE the law of cycles came to be. homura believes herself to be the only one that remembers it, and doesn't realize kyuubey would become intrigued enough to act upon her revelations to him. while homura and her soul gem are being "incubated", she turns into a witch WITHIN her own soul gem, as she is unable to be taken away by the law of cycles, but is also unable to fully "hatch" into a witch as a result of being "incubated" (this part is a bit tricky to understand). witches technically STILL exist as a concept, with madokami working in the past, present, and future to erase them before they are born. but if for some reason, madokami cannot get to a soul gem that is on the verge of witchhood, how can she erase them? kyuubey wants to find out, and uses homura to lure madokami to him.
BASICALLY, chaos ensues after homura shuts herself in an alternate world she's created within herself while waiting for madokami to take her away with the law of cycles (thanks to kyuubey isolating/incubating her). here is a quick timeline:
ALMOST succumbs to despair, soul gem now on the brink --> kyuubey isolates her JUST before law of cycles can reach her --> succumbs to despair while in isolation --> becomes a witch within her soul gem --> unknowingly creates a labyrinth reflecting the "perfect" world she desires --> "lives" in the labyrinth with "madoka" --> realizes she's in a labyrinth --> realizes she's in HER labyrinth, becoming self aware and realizing nothing is "real" --> decides she wants nothing more than to be with madoka after convincing herself that madoka doesn't actually want to be madokami
with her newfound self awareness, while waiting for madokami to end her "suffering" through the law of cycles, homura grabs and stops her before she can.
if a corrupted soul gem --> grief seed = despair
then a corrupted soul gem --> dark orb = "love"
and so, akuhomu is born! she breaks her OWN corrupted soul gem so that it can transform not into a grief seed, but a "dark orb" thanks to her "love" for madoka. she is an anomoly in every way, having successfully managed to turn her pain/despair into pleasure so that she doesn't succumb to it. unfortunately, she doesn't retain any of her sanity in the process. after she decides she cannot TRULY be with madoka unless she is stripped from her responsibility as god, she splits madoka in two, effectively separating her from her godhood. now that there is no god, she can rewrite the laws of the universe yet again (as madoka had done so earlier) so that it may bend to her will. homura takes over and becomes the ruler of this new world, meaning madoka is probably trapped unless homura HERSELF decides to release her. despite claiming she "loves" madoka, she also acknowledges they are enemies. while destroying everything madoka worked so hard for shows how little homura actually understands her (altho she superficially retains some of it), homura herself is aware of this discrepancy, knowing they are opposites that cannot coexist. what they represent is far beyond themselves, both having lost their humanity in completely different ways and for different reasons. according to the wiki, madoka is the embodiment of hope (selfless love), while homura is the embodiment of despair (selfish love).
the reason kyuubey cannot comprehend what homura has become is because he cannot turly understand love in any of its forms. even with hope and despair, he sees them as black and white formulas/concepts, and isn't capable of sympathizing with the girls at any point he's with them. but then you have an emotion like love, with so many forms and layers, it is simply far too complex for him to even have factored it into the equation. as distorted as homura's "love" is, it's still "love" (albeit a selfish one). her "love" is, arguably, the strongest there is.
td;lr homura "loves" madoka and became a witch within herself, and a "devil" in real life, by turning her pain/despair into pleasure. this "love" however, leans toward obsession and selfishness and caused her to remove madoka from the part that made her godlike so that they can be together again. thanks to kyuubey's meddling, homura basically "killed" god because she "loves" her. also she's crazy and idk how to feel about it.

Through out the whole anime, madoka has only two tranformations, magical girl, and celestial being, and her regular self
This show disturbs me on a whole new level
The Holy Quintet transformations are my favorite (besides sayaka's witch control)
