What I’ve learned about a lot of the “impractical” martial arts is they were created for a specific purpose, wing chun for example you’re supposed to wield two bladed weapons, it focuses a lot on parrying and deflecting on coming attacks instead of blocking, capoeira was a style that was designed to be practiced in secret and was done to music to look like a dance. When you take these martial arts out of their context and apply them to actually fighting you have to understand you can’t use them the exact same way you learned this, because despite how fluid and lively capoeira looks, when stationary and planted it can deliver some of the most powerful kicks I’ve seen from some really odd angles. Context matters and it’s always important to differentiate that practicing and learning a martial art will be very different that using it in a practical setting, that even applies to judo, wrestling, boxing, etc. you’re learning skills but in a real fight you aren’t going to be playing by the same rules you trained under. Always appreciate where your classroom ends

I took classes in both Wing Chun and Taekwondo.
Both of them seem really focused on teaching fighting like choreographed dance.
Specific attacks with specific defenses, it doesn't all seem very practical and applicable to real life.
One thing I did learn in taekwondo was how to kick someone in the face really fast.
One thing I learned in Wing Chun was how to block a punch and lock up someone's arm in the same movement.
Those two things alone have ended the few fights I have actually been in pretty quickly.

When people dislike Wing Chun because it's a classical martial art, it always bugs me that they don't immediately bring up Jeet kune Do. That's what I teach, and it's the original mixed martial art. Our mantra is literally, "Accept what is useful, reject what is useless, and add what is essentially your own." Which means that if you find something that doesn't work, they expect you to leave it out of your repertoire

As a wing chun student that’s also learned and cross trained in Muay Thai and some bjj, most of wing chun is much better suited for grappling than striking, or at the very least, is best when in grappling range. The few things you can make work outside of that range are parries, straight punch to the face since most peoples guards aren’t expecting a straight punch, and kicks to the knee or stomach from punch range. All the other stuff like trapping, guard manipulation, elbows, and chain punch only really work from close range, with chain punch only really working when the opponent can’t run, like when they’re cornered or you have them on the ground and you’re in mount.

One aspect of WC that I feel many people ignore is the context of its original purpose and theory.
The system was created for someone one smaller, with less force in their strikes. The emphasis was placed on speed and multiple strikes to compensate for someone stronger. Almost all modern striking arts emphasise getting the most power for a strike. When you apply that to WC, it throws off its form and frankly just can’t compete based on its framework.
WC, is weaker because of its design, not there lack of. Figuratively speaking, boxing is like “how can I get the most power out of this one punch” while WC is more like “I can’t throw like that guy, but I can throw 15 punches in the same time to equal the overall power of their one punch.”

I trained Wing Chun for 3 years. A year ago, I got in an intense situation where self defense was needed. I fought better than typical street fighters, but if u know what average street fighters are like, you probably know being slightly better than them means nothing.
After the experience, I started to train boxing. But like the guy said in the video, Wing Chun really helped learning boxing moves faster because it's heavily focused on understanding my body and ways to generate forces properly from my legs, hips, waist and shoulder.
Any martial arts never encrouage you to just swing your arms, and they teach u to build up a force from movements of your other body parts. But often, it's not easy to get used to, especially when u have other things to learn like footwork, different types of strikes, and even rules for a sports match. Wing Chun is definitely a good choice if you just wanna focus on training ways to utilize your body parts better and generate legit forces.

    Depends on utility:
as a weapon to kill: sambo, jiujitsu, silat, muay boran (they focus on take down and shut down target).
As a sport: kick boxing, jeet kune do, muay thai, judo, tae kwon do (they have great training for the body).
As a self defence: karv maga, wushu, wingchun, karate (they have great methods to defend even against stronger threats with finger to eye gouge, chop into throat, chop into back head, balls attack, foot stomp)

Okinawa Karate, goju ryu to be exact is extremely effective in practical application. Every move is precise and meant to be executed in a real world situation. The training is meant to strengthen your mind and body, repetitive movements coupled with breathing techniques downloads the mind with reactionary movement ready to spring forth in an instant.

but during a real fight, I hug my opponent and wrestling ensues. Locks and chokes are more useful and less risky than punches and kicks.

Ving Tsun is worth learning just for the basics of the center line theory and the three pillars. just using that will upgrade your fighting skills. also, punching a sheep stomach full of BBs that you sew together yourself to break down calcium deposits in between your knuckles is just fun for everyone.

If you don't know wing Chun also have blocks not punching only
Wing Chun is not like street fight moves ok
Having very fast hands are also defensive
Wing Chun can block 1 punch and give 5 punches only by a second wing Chun is useful ok

I'm not an expert, but based on what I've seen and heard from experts when asked, is that wing chung by it's self can't do much, thats why a lot of masters combine it, by itself is weak but when conbined it really shows superiority

This is a good martial art to condition your arms + create speed with blocking and striking drills. If you like block strike focus. Reduce your telegraph. The noise conditioning forearm blocks is therapeutic. Learn to strike with karate, throw and roll and choke with judo or jiu-jitsu...

Learning wing chun basics is useful in my opinion. Its the most efficient way to strike and block in close quarters and teaches wrist control. Its only one style of combat though and was originally developed for self defense by a woman.

Wing chun is just a conceptual DLC to add to your standard "mma", that's how it was originaly used, by people who already knew how to fight, it's just theoretical stuff to add to your game, if you want to, don't have to though🤷‍♂️

As we are a connected world, with so many tourists and migrants moving around to different places, the old martial arts are becoming more and more obsolete. Styles that incorporate more and more techniques from completely different styles are more and more likely to win in a conflict. That is why newer styles that are combination martial arts, and especially MMA are so devastating, because they don’t follow a narrow set of rules of style. It’s harder to guess what a fighter is going to do, and so it’s harder to defend against. Still, NONE of these older styles are a waste of time. They still teach you incredible levels of skill, focus, inner strength, and determination, and they greatly increase your ability to defend against the average bully or mugger.

    frankly with wing chun:
I discovered that different countries has different versions of it. mostly the same but different philosophies and all. different masters even added their own experiences to the mix.
I learned under a german grand master and a turkish one. the moves were similar but still had differences. I am turkish, and one that I learned during high school was much more street fight oriented than anything. no rules, no holding back. if someone dies in the heat of action....... well shit happens and you defended yourself.
I remember a few times people asked our teacher if there were less violent and damaging ways to incapacitate people. and he showed them just that.
and he was also a security guard for over 20 years. so he literally had to chance to test what worked and what didnt, and focused on teaching the useful moves first. tradition came later. his very first lesson to anyone were always been how to defend against a knife. or at least last long against it.
I think it is only useless if you stick to tradition too much. times are changing and we we gotta adapt to it. that applies to martial arts as well.
