When C. Everett Koop was the surgeon general in Ronald Reagan's administration conservatives pressured him to say that abortion represented a serious risk to the health of women. Putting aside his personal beliefs as a conservative he refused to do so because it was not medically true. Wow the polling changed on the legalization of marijuana since this episode first aired. It is legal and easily to obtain here in Canada. There is a cannabis shop around the corner from my home. I don't use the stuff, but I'm agnostic about the subject.
What does believing that nothing can be known about god have to do with weed?

Reminds me of Dr. Joycelyn Elders, Surgeon General during the Clinton administration. She was also outspoken about drug legalization and sex education, and was later forced to resign.
Medicine and science should never, EVER, be at the mercy of politics.
Medical Marijuana Legalization: Beginning with California in 1996, numerous states have passed laws permitting the use of marijuana for medical purposes. As of now, a majority of states have some form of medical marijuana program.
Recreational Marijuana Legalization: Colorado and Washington became the first states to legalize recreational marijuana in 2012. Since then, several other states, including California, Oregon, Nevada, Michigan, and more, have followed suit.
Decriminalization: Many states have moved to decriminalize the possession of small amounts of marijuana, reducing or eliminating criminal penalties.
At the time the episode "The Warfare of Genghis Khan" aired on February 11, 2004, the stance on marijuana in the United States was significantly more conservative compared to today.
I believe this episode called "Ellie" and it's from season 2, which would have aired in 2001
Medical marijuana was sort of a misnomer. Just as there is little evidence to suggest that Refer Madness was credible there is also very little evidence that marijuana has any real medicinal applications. At best a mild pain reliever that can help increase appetite. With many viable alternatives. But it is relatively harmless, people were doing it anyway and now there is little moral stigma associated with using it here in Canada. People want it and I don't care much either way. Obviously it was a mistake to lock people up for small quantities.
It literally says what episode this is from in the description... What kind of shitty bot are you?
@@SiavashAgharazi well corrected
And would you look at that, the stance in the medical community is pretty much exactly the same 20 years later. What's that conservative phrase? Facts don't care about your feelings?
sorkin centrism in just over 4.5 minutes!
The source episode for the key line from Hamilton: “So long as you come home at the end of the day, that would be enough”
Good for the SG refusing to resign. Not all things are about politics.
Later in the episode she resigned.
@@seanwebb605And Bartlet refused to accept it
It's now making sense.
The polls and politics have changed dramatically
Times have changed
About time!!
This didn’t age well.
It was pretty silly at the time, too. I remember it.
@@NiceTryLaoChe Well, the most vocal opponents of the policy at the time happened to make the biggest fuss about it. They were silly, but not unimportant.
Neither did their stance on gays in the military. On some issues, the Bartlet admin was far more conservative than their real life equivalents.
Oh it has aged incredibly well. it's a really good time capsule for the issue and how it was being debated at the time.
@@skribeworks I would say that the administration was idealistic but pragmatic. They had an agenda and understood the obstacles in their way.

"The Allman Brothers, Josh"
What?
A reference to the top of the episode. Dr. Griffith was on an interview in which someone asked if Marijuana can cause cancer. She mentioned in her reply that he should 'put the bong back behind the Allman Brothers albums where it belongs.'
Whoof that didnt age well
the more i watch these reruns the more i realize what an abusive prick Sheen portrayed the president as. He comes in screaming at CJ and threatening people's careers instead of just asking "how did this happen?". actually the more i watch the reruns the more i see how deplorable some of these characters were. namely Josh and Tobey, they were smug self righteous condescending dbags

He is right though. She had no business commenting on laws
Why is that? Should experts in a field not be able to give their insight on legislation?
@@raldenvcsIs she part of a committee about the legalisation of said substance? No. She is the primary physician of the president of the USA . I am a legal expert but I don't open my mouth for medical issues unless I am employed as an expert on some sort of forum.
She was being asked direct questions about the relative harms of marijuana. She gave her expert opinion based on the best evidence of the time. She took no position regarding the law regarding possession, use or study of marijuana.
@@raldenvcs qualifications in any field does not make you a scholar on public opinion and how that affects policies. You're a doctor, stick to just the medicine.
@@MIGBMWLOVER The Surgeon General is *not* the "primary physician of the President". The Surgeon General is an official of the US Government, advising on & addressing health decisions. She wasn't Jed's doctor.
Due to their relationship Ellie did that for attention and got it.
