      Yeah, I mean, compared to some of the UK’s worst areas, St Paul’s feels like a nice day out 😅

    My grandparents lived in St. Paul’s all their lives. It is nothing like as bad as you portray it. Most of the housing was built during the Victorian period to house the working classes.😊

      St Paul's isn't too bad. It's mainly students and immigrants. I lived there as a student and never had any issues.

    Compared to Birmingham, Coventry, Kidderminster, Stroud, or even Gloucester, Cheltenham feels more like a sedate little village! It is a very odd place to live though as it's essentially two completely different towns fused together. The northern portion, where St.Paul's is situated, is more deprived but it's also where most of the key services are, as well as the University of Gloucestershire's Hardwick and Francis Close Hall campuses, two of the area's largest employers by a considerable margin. If you go to the city centre, or anywhere south, it suddenly feels like you've randomly wondered into the area around Regent's Park in Central London. This is made even weirded when you discover that the British Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) is located just on the western edge of town.

      Yep. South and East Cheltenham is much better off than North and West.

    I like St Paul's, despite its crowding and the major problem I see with it: too much traffic. To say 'there's no shops' is a bit misleading when, as you've said, Cheltenham High Street is only a short distance away - it's literally a ten minute walk from the town centre, even less if you just want to go to a supermarket. And 'a small park' - do you mean Pittville Park, which defines the northern edge of St Paul's and continues across Evesham Road? It isn't so small.

    I would like you to do videos on Worthing, Oxford, Eastbourne and Hastings. So l can avoid any mistakes. I'm still shocked of how nasty Swindon looked and it's so close to Bath via train.

    Cheltenham is like London, with the affluent West and deprived East. Only swap them around and smush them together in a couple mile radius. You're either poor or loaded in Cheltenham. You can almost draw a line through the town, like a Berlin Wall of economics. Pretty crazy, but that's the UK now.

    • @chrismanners9091
      @chrismanners9091 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It was always like that. Hesters Way and St Paul’s look much better now than they did in the nineties.

  • @chrismanners9091
    @chrismanners9091 ปีที่แล้ว

    One final point (I promise). This area is very close to the town centre, which will have a relatively large amount of crime because it gets a lot of tanked up visitors. I notice that Lansdown and Montpellier, which are very affluent, have a lot of crime, presumably because of proximity to the town centre. Is it possible that some of the crime in St Paul's is overspill town centre beer and fights?

  • @pestopizza2001
    @pestopizza2001 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    The area looks ok compared to most cities, just goes to show you can't judge a book by it's cover

    • @chrismanners9091
      @chrismanners9091 ปีที่แล้ว

      There's a rougher bit around the corner that's not in the video. I would think that's got more crime than the bits featured here. Plus this area is right by the town centre, so I expect a fair bit of the trouble is overspill of drunks from there rather than residents.

    You drove past my house 😅 (rented mind you) in 7 years leaving here we've never had any crime or anti social behaviour issues though you can see it around, I think the deprived stats might be slightly off just because a large amount of St pauls is student housing, the average house price in the area is £200,000. So you've gotta be on a pretty penny to own a home here in the first place.
    I'm from kidderminster originally and I'd be interested to see a video with stats for the Horsefair there, or the rifle range

    • @ukexplored
      @ukexplored  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's cool! Cheltenham as a whole (or individual areas) are nowhere near the worst of the UK, which is why I thought it was interseting to show some of the areas that are struggling as they're often forgotten or not known about.
      It's hard to say exactly why it's struggling - Kidderminster has decent stats, you're good at picking places to live 😀

      @@ukexplored I might be wrong, but I think it's in Wyman's Brook district. The old terraced houses in St Paul's actually look pretty good now. I wonder if they're attractive to a more affluent demographic than before, who value being able to walk into town and to work?

    • @ukexplored

    This report is bullshit. The disparity is huge between average cheltenham income and lowest income, but it's no worse that anywhere in the UK, and actually not a bad area to live if you can afford it. St Paul's is fine.

    Doesn’t look as bad as some other places, at least the housing stock is possible to gentrify.

    • @chrismanners9091
      @chrismanners9091 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, and I think a lot of that’s already happening. Cheltenham has lots of jobs fairly central so you wouldn’t particularly need a car. That makes gentrification easier.

  • @marchfast8291
    @marchfast8291 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I think to thrive in this sort of neighbourhood you'd want to have lots of friends in the area, to be on good terms with your neighbours. Also safer if you don't have a car, but rely on public transport or walking.

    • @ukexplored
      @ukexplored  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      You definitely want to get along with your neighbours in high crime areas or you’ll find yourself in a living hell 😂

    • @chrismanners9091
      @chrismanners9091 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Wouldn't think neighbours would be any problem. I agree about not having a car. Cheltenham has lots of jobs and social stuff you could walk or cycle to. Lots of younger people now actually prefer that. It's very different in eg lots of South Wales, where a household needs at least one car just to get to work.

    It’s a shame how these areas get run down they should send all the criminals to Australia like they used to in the olden days the UK is a nice country being run down by criminals and the conservative government
