You had valid criticisms against indie music, but I also think the genre has some pretty significant redeeming attributes. I've always appreciated the huge amount of sonic experimentation in the genre... new instruments, influences, etc. surface regularly, whereas I'm always waiting for something new to happen in my favourite genre, pop punk, and when it does, it's always met with so much blowback and resistance. It also seems to me that indie music has long had more people of colour and women in it than most genres of rock, so they must be doing something right culture-wise.
That said, I remember the obnoxious Pitchfork days... a lot of indie fans probably haven't heard much criticism come their way and have no idea how to deal with it haha. Try being a scene kid in '08!

I watch a lot of your videos (I’d say most of the new releases and a large part of the archive) and my suggestion is that people can get angry and / or sad not because of the message (to which you appeal here: “do you disagree that copying someone isn’t progressive?” I think most people would agree) but because of the way you talk about it: you troll / stereotype / make fun / talk shit about stuff you don’t like and music is indeed an important part of people’s lives and identity and they can get sensitive because of that.
Me personally I don’t care about it - it’s just your style and as a fan of tool and “deft ones” I believe that you often miss the value / point cause you’re not trying to dig into the stuff you’re initially not interested in (surprise-surprise).
Not saying that you should be nice to everyone (and freedom of speech etc etc) say what you want - but it’s kinda strange to see you being upset with this reaction when you talk like that to people..
PS never bothered to dislike any of the videos on YT - unless it was total crap which isn’t the case of your clips
PPS It’s also kinda surprised me how protective (maybe the wrong word) you are in the comments - I expected you to take stuff easier with your style haha

Your racism in metal video was, if anything, too easy on racists. Like you point out, punks drove out the racists decades ago. Most metal fans never did the same kind of counter organizing and being willing to fight and risk serious injury and even death to drive out white supremacists.
I've seen small groups of idiots seig heil at a punk show way back in the 80s and early 90s, 10-15 Nazis. I've seen whole crowds seig heil at metal shows, over two thirds of the audience. NSBM bands don't even have a hard time finding a mainstream club to play at, unlike Nazi skinhead bands.
And as far as it being hard to be white, you answered, "Maybe in prison, nowhere else." Not even there. Maybe in California...In more than half the prisons in America, all over the south and midwest, it's the white racist gangs who run the prisons working with the crooked white racist guards.

All of these video listed have subjective points on contentions that have validity, some that may be a bit shortsighted that could have could have been communicated better but of all the videos I'm surprised he haven't talked about his video on "THE TRUTH ABOUT JAPANESE METAL" pretty sure Finn had more dislikes than likes on it. Perhaps because it was on the second channel.
Out of all the videos he's made made that one was the one that was actually objectively contentious and maybe harmful even since he's accused people of liking foreign culture music as being fetishtistic instead of just liking the music.
I remember a really funny interaction he had with one of the commenter Sophie Claire. an asian woman. summarizing his dislike as a projection of his own insecurities Finn coming back with a really horrible take.

I enjoyed all those videos. I'm not surprised the racism video upset people, because racists don't like be called out on it. Continued education and exposure on the topic is what's needed so I'm glad a video like that is out there.
I'm not into trap metal and think you are probably wrong about it being the future of metal but it's a good video, something to think about and I don't have to agree with your conclusion to respect your take and opinion on it. It would be stupid to thumbs down it just because I didn't agree with the conclusion.
And let's face it... there's A LOT of bad indie music. There's a few gems out there but it's overwhelmingly bland and boring music. It's also a huge umbrella term that incorporates so many styles.
I'm a big fan of European metal but your criticisms of it, while cherry picking, were spot on for what the examples were. Part of the fun is that it's cheesy. These guys dressing up as vikings must know what they are doing is cheesy. They must. I hope...
I have learned a lot from your videos. Both in finding new bands and also in challenging my own thoughts and impressions of music and sometimes I decide I don't agree with you on things. But I appreciate your perspective and it's good to engage with ideas outside of your echo chamber. Some people can't handle that though.

the idea that libs are the only people that get triggered is quite silly as this video highlights quite well. Also to your point about the black people vs hip hop being the problem, the thing that always struck me was that the rock guys who complained the loudest about 2000s hip hop lyrical content were always hair metal guys who listened to equally as frivolous and misogynistic music. To the indie video thing, I think Americans generally hate to be accused of being rich and a huge chunk of upper middle class and upper class people identify as middle class or even working class. I remember a kid I knew in high school getting very indignant about Obama's quote about working class people clinging to guns and religions. "As a member of the working class I find that insulting" (The guy's dad was a trader on wall street.) I grew up in a middle to upper middle class neighborhood where a decent number of people were into indie music but when I went away to NYU I was introduced to the stereotypical upper class indie fans who were really quite unlikable. Kids I knew were dumber than me but were more worldly bc they went to prep school.
