  • With the summer season well underway we start milling lumber for our outhouse project. Transporting the materials was not as easy as we had hoped for but we still successfully get our fully loaded boat up to our remote lakeside cabin.
We appreciate you tagging along for our Alaskan adventure 😀

hi , I was born and raised in appalatha ky. thank you for a view into my past . but we used ponys to pull logs out of the mountions. we used 1 inch branches to make chicken enclosues, it took a lot of #8 nails. we picket up our tolet and moved it to a new hole. we put the bed posts on lids filled with kerisene or desil fuel to keep bugs from us. we took baths with a bole of warm water and towel and warsh cloth, it took time and work. after school we went to worke at the home stead. the best toy was a good stick. peace

around ten years ago I took a motorcycle ride up into way North East Canada on the Trans Labrador "highway". The highway was mostly a remote gravel road that would have distances of 150+ miles between any sort of services or anything at all really. Just wilderness for miles and miles. I noticed pretty early on that if I was stopped on the side of the road and someone happened to pass by they would make sure I was OK,. Often just a thumbs up / thumbs down to which I would reply with a thumbs up and they went on with their day. I realized that even if you could get cell or sat phone reception it may take many hours for a someone to make it out to where you are. The people that live/work in the area already know this so they look after each other. I made sure to do the same the rest of that trip and I like to think in life in general.

We got rid of ALL our spruce in our neck of the wood in Alaska well before the huge infestation started near us, a couple decades before all our homestead neighbors did. We planted western red cedar and yellow cedar and the perimeter forest line with black cotton wood we mill everything ourselves and have a steady customer base that we cater to for many decades when my father first started rotating our forest portion of land. We rotate at 10 acres per species cleared every year, let that 10 acres go fallow for the following year, then replant with 5 year old potted trees we grow ourselves in our greenhouses. So a total of 3- 10 acre cuttings and processing every year. We have NEVER had issues with fires, rot, blight, nor environmental nut jobs (which is by far the worst infestation in Alaska!) Good videos young man!

It laid in our garage for 30+ years. And then our darling belated son in law made a beautiful dining room table and many incredible cutting boards. At 7:45 into the video you pointed out a rather elegant large beetle. That one is Monochamus scutellatus, also called the white-spotted sawyer or spruce sawyer. They eat and lay eggs in already dead or dying Spruce trees of larger diameters. They come in after a fire or after the Dendroctonus rufipennis spruce beetle has done its evil job of killing the tree.
We have both of these beetles here in Colorado too, decimating our forests of pine, englemann spruce, and the white spruce above 9000' altitude. It creates high fire danger in our forests and with our many lightning strikes fire in a half dead forest is just plain terrifying. I'm happy to see the two of you doing the hard work of clearing your land of the standing dead, making use of the wood, and improving the health of the your forest.
Also, the new outhouse looks amazing! (I peeked ahead)

I just love the little homestead you two have created. That and having a "vacation" cabin makes me smile. Isn't it amazing the things you can accomplish. I don't think there is anything you two can do together. What a great couple/team you make. So fun

Might I suggest the next time you do this. Try ratchet strapping a pallet of wood and towing it behind the boat. For decades lumber companies transported their logs by water to a mill downstream.
It would at least take the boat's weight capacity out of the calculation and make the transportation safer and maybe allow you to transport even more.
    Love your channel.

How many days do you reckon it would take to go the 60 miles when they're travelling as slowly as necessary to keep the pallet of wood from breaking up? That would be important to know.

Gotta' say, never thought I would see a boat that could use a powered winch on the front. Could have been useful on those shallow creeks.

I run a couple of sawmills (Alaskan with a 96” bar and a woodmizer LT-15 wide). A quick recommendation, when you have the cant, or at least flat sides, try taking the point off of the clamp. It won’t dig into the wood but will still have the pressure and if you keep it a little lower it won’t twist when cutting.

Would an anchor winch on the bow help walk the anchor upstream bed it then winch the boat up to anchor repeat etc? Always useful for other things as well.
