  • Richard Louv, author of several books on the benefits to humans, particularly children, interacting with nature and learning about natural play, sat down with Staten Islander News. Topics included his latest book, Our Wild Calling, and the many research studies that now exist on this previously under-studied topic.
There are too many benefits for kids interacting with nature to list here, but some of them include increased cognitive function, fewer attention and disruption issues, as well as other benefits to the health and well-being of children. Many of us remember the days of unstructured play outside, which current generations of children are not being shown. Richard Louv and the people participating in the movement he started are hoping to change this, bringing back natural play and interaction with the world around us. Getting kids away from their screens may help nurture much more than just their minds. It is also food for the soul.
