This is a subject I have considered for a number of years, ever since I pulled up at a traffic light in Singapore next to what appeared to be a home made handicapped vehicle driven by a gentleman sitting in a wheel chair. I could see the tops of his wheelchair tires. He was steering with a motorcycle type handlebars, hand throttle and brake controls. My thoughts were what an engenius simple vehicle for a handicap person to use for local errands, shopping, etc. Was there anything like this being produced in the USA, versus the handicap vans requiring complicated lift platforms, and/or maneuvering to get the driver into a conventional seat, unusual brake controls, etc. When I got back to the USA, I looked around a bit to see what I might find. either gas or electric powered,...not much. I have now advanced in age, and I am living in a senior community in Florida. Most of my driving is just local errands, food shopping, etc. What do I need a full size car for these errands?. For that matter what does ones wife need as a second vehicle to do such errands. Its makes me think there are a large number of retirees across this country that might make use of an affordable, simple vehicle. And of course with our escalating fuel prices, a simple electric model that doesn't need to exceed 50-60 mph would be OK. I might certainly have one as my primary vehicle. I'm looking thru a lot of these proposed designs, and here are a few of my thoughts. Electric is the way to go, 1) small engines producing a lot of torque, 2) no need for any type of transmission, 3) wheel power (likely in-wheel hub design) for simplicity, Many older seniors come to a point where they need assistance with their walking, via some sort of 'walker, or even a wheelchair. So likely another consideration should be whether this vehicle could offer access to a wheelchair senior, or even a wheelchair veteran,...thinking ahead,...broadens the market for the vehicle. From some of my experiences with torsion bar axles vs conventional sprung axles I realize how small of a ground clearance they can allow, thus a 3 wheel vehicle with such an axle at the rear would allow for relatively low freeboard for wheelchair access from the rear,...then the single wheel up forward would allow for motorcycle type steering. But to tell the truth I am much more attracted to the newer 3 wheel styles that place the single driven wheel at the rear, and the other pair up front. I'm wondering if anyone can come up with a solution like this for handicap usage??.....such as this one presented in these 7. Of the 7 presented here, my choice would be ... th-cam.com/video/JjbRduwOWGA/w-d-xo.html I also believe that the overall size of this vehicle should NOT tend toward diminutive,..ie very small. Interesting i know about the Solo but hadn’t heard about the others. I am surprised this didn’t include the Arcimoto FUV which is better known than most of these. I have heard about the FUV and SOLO now for years so surprised they haven’t really made much of a dent in terms of mass sales. I think the $18,000 price tag has something to do it as it seems steep. I like that there was a car in the list that was under $10,000 maybe that will make a splash.
There is most likely going to be a specific solution to spanning mass transit and micro mobility: pods that can form a larger whole. It's much more likely that the preferred experience is to have your own space. Not saying there won't be buses or train style environments, but being able to have your own pod is waaaaay better than sharing a space with the random public and being exposed to things like viruses or violence. The best of both worlds would be a pod that combines lego-like with others to go to a similar destination or get on the highway. The efficiencies would be unbelievable, in the same space as a car, you could have 2 or even 4 pods and in the space of 4 cars with solo drivers you would no longer need vehicle spacing and be able to fit 13 to 28 pods.
love em, except the solo $18k, silly idea, no room for the dog. $10k, I'd like to see that. Sounds about a good price point. I love the Nobe, would be awesome in my little town, and 3 seats. Its awesome, good for me, the wife and the dog. Its a bit pricey at $30k tho.

They are licensed as motorcycles, thus lower insurance rates and less stringent safety measures are required. It is also likely that with cars like the Ampere XUV (no windshield), you will be required to use a helmet.
These need to be half the size of a normal traffic lane, less size, more cars per lane, less traffic and less need to build more roads. These all miss the mark at solving the basic problem which is stated at the start of the video. Most trips are done with one person in the car. We need something cheap to buy as a work commuter that is easy to park and takes up less room, while keeping our weekend/family car at home. I would not bother with any of these.
You mean a motorcycle. You cannot make a car too narrow, it will not corner safely, These are all smaller, cheaper, and one is single seat -did you even watch the video?
About the only thing someone can buy today is that coffee machine, but a bench top model, sans a car. It's sad if the best are unavailable. One problem with all these single rear wheel drives. They will never work in snowy areas or snow period. Rear tire will just slip slip slip away. Now if it was front wheel drive it would be better. But there is absolutely no weight on the rear wheel to give it the traction necessary
Aptera already went broke once trying to crowdfund. The big problem is they all rely on a Chinese supply chain and China is shutting down again for COVID.
Apterra expects to be in production the first of 2023. They have already bought factory space and is in the process of equipping it. They just passed 25,000 orders.
Traffic jams at fuel stations are horrific now, with fuel up times taking minutes only, how is the electric car industry going to get around this very real disadvantage? Plus the range of electric vehicles are truly pathetic. On top of that, and is purely a safety issue, silent vehicles are more inclined to become road kill and cause accidents, rather than a vehicle which can be heard...
You miss the main advantage of the EV. You just plug it in when you get home and before you know it, it is ready to go again. The Aptera is planning to provide a 100KWh battery that will give it an expected 1000 mile range. So, if you plan on driving for over 14 hours straight without charging overnight, then maybe an electric trike isn't for you.
Thank you very much for the links and a ¡VER HAPPY NEW YEAR!.
Aptera would appear to be the lowest drag/ cleanest aero wise, hands down.
Agreed, plus solar charging allows for almost no need to plug in.
And impossible to take the groceries bags. Changing a flat rear tire must be a pain...When design primes over functionality.
