My wife and I attending his concert in Portland Oregon in the mid 1990’s. To hear his voice live in a beautiful theater was so much for the senses. Pitch perfect. Deep, rich and melodic. He was and is truly a legend.
I got chills on the last note. Only a handful of singers have given me chills--Frank Sinatra at the end of Autumn Leaves, John Raitt in the climax of Soliloquy, 11 year old Jackie Evancho, soprano Sonya Yoncheva, and currently, Filipina singer Jona Viray, numerous times, especially when she goes suddenly from soft to loud while rising in pitch.
December 1983 Torme performed it for us kids backstage after our practice before parade and concert at Disney World. We gave three standing ovations and it was the best performance I saw him do of the song. Mom almost got Michael Jackson's autograph that day as he was in the park so I saved part of it he handed back, my pass and Christmas program. I was more impressed with Torme.
Just no way to describe the ultimate magic in this man's voice. Brings me to tears. To watch the man who wrote this song sing it is awe inspiring. A completely underrated talent. This is quite probably the best singer who ever lived. RIP Mr. Mel Torme. I know you didn't like it, but the "Velvet Fog" is amazing.
I'm not sure how old he was when he sung this, but I'm guessing he performed this in the mid to late 90's which would make him in his 70's at the time. If that's the case, you can tell that he took good care of his voice. Vocal folds tend to get a little more relaxed as you get older, but his voice had no pitch issues and his overall sound was just amazing. Simply wonderful!
What a wonderful talent and not only does he present it with the expertise he only does, but he allowed his friend and protege Mr. Nat King Cole to take part in presenting it as well!!! A genious!!
He sang this on the Tonight Show (Jay Leno may have already taken over) and he was perfect! You could have heard a pin drop! The audience was spellbound
The Maestro of song in the Autumn and best years of his life. I can think of other great songs sung by legendary performers including the great Sinatra but when Torme weaves his magic then the work becomes truly definitive. I doubt that we will see such musical talent in one individual again. Thank you nicemanko for posting yet another superlative video.
Been playing this on the piano again this December...one of my favorites. I have Mel, the velvet fog singing in my brain to guide me... I play by ear, as I'm too nearsighted to read music. Seems you can achieve immortality by composing a good Christmas carol. This will be played and heard hundreds of years from now, I'm sure.
Mel Mel Mel Mel Mel... Master Maestro ! I was in the Custom Clothing Business and Majored in Music... He Dressed, Perfect ! His Music Perfect ! Perfectly Mel !
With joy he sang and hit the heights while touching all that heard... actually saw one of his last concerts and this song sung . Amazing memory to touch
This must be the best Chistmas song of them all. No one performs it better than the Velvet Fog, God bless you Mel and thanks for leaning us such a legacy
A treasure, yes, you said it just right! A Joyous Noel to You & Yours! From Leo in the town of Alamosa in the beautiful San Luis Valley of Southern Colorado USA. Check out Leo's Christmas on TH-cam (Garyskiman L) 🎅🤶🦌❄☃🎵🎄🎁✨🖖🙏
I love this composition, I am working on a guitar and vocal version of this, I get obseessed every Christmas with this song, and this improv- tender and respective of his own composition yet jamming it so beautifully, man he was something!!
He might not "own" it, but he is the composer of this, the greatest Christmas song of all time (written in 1946 with Bob Wells on a 100 plus degrees day in Beverly Hills CA).
100+degrees in Beverly Hills Ca 'Wow !! Back in the day I use to frequent Ye Little Club on Canon Drive in Beverly Hills come Fri & Sat evening.... Was a fun & intimate cabaret & sometimes the Bel Air Hotel piano bar lounge where Bud Herman use to play & Estelle Reiner would sing.... Relished Piano Bars & at one time LA had a plethora of them scattered All about the LA basin
Great !!!! His singing technique is excellent. But it is not his technique that makes him great. He sings freely with a rich musicality, yet is not a bit technical. The whole song is filled with a simple and warm message. That's what makes him great.
Thanks for posting! Love it! I wish I could find a live version he did with the Boston Pops (I think) in the 90s. He ends it with "love and joy, come to you..." The last notes he sings there just about the most gorgeous I've ever heard! Let me know if anyone knows where I could find it.
@sugar1756 Uh, Mel was pretty famous. Yeah. Will Friedwald, a noted jazz author and historian said of Mel, “ Tormé works with the most beautiful voice a man is allowed to have, and he combines it with a flawless sense of pitch… As an improviser he shames all but two or three other scat singers and quite a few horn players as well. ” -Will Friedwald, Jazz Singing Yeah, Mel Torme was kinda famous.
"The Christmas Song" 1944(Robert Wells / Mel Torme) Pat Shea Chestnuts roasting on an open fire Jack Frost nipping at your nose Yule-tide carols being sung by a choir And folks dressed up like Eskimos. The great, great Mel Torme…. A gift to have him in our lifetime….❤

Indeed, truly a vocal artistic. What control & expression of his instrument - his singing musical voice. Wow, amazing.
Amazing how his voice and singing just got better as he got older. Never get tired of listening to him.
Way back when the Vegas strip still had intimate lounge shows, I had the privilege of seeing him perform. It was a wonderful display of pure talent.
Oh man, he still had it all in his twilight years. What a wonderful talent.
Those who know of Mr.Torme are very fortunate people🤗
Oh my God!!!! This performance gave me CHILLS!!!! Pure perfection!!!!
Yes! My feelings also!
I got chills on the last note. AND ON THE BEACH IN JULY.
AWESOME ♪♪♫♪
He is so amazing.
That's so shame I cant see him
A master vocalist. What great musical imagination. Hard to imagine why Mel Torme wasn't more famous. This performance was absolutely wonderful.
Mel Torme and The Christmas Songs ❤
Now I remember why Mel is still my favorite male singer.
Absolute magic. every note and vocal quality has true meaning. He has sublime expression.
I'm not sure how old he was when he sung this, but I'm guessing he performed this in the mid to late 90's which would make him in his 70's at the time. Spot on - Incredible legend. Mr. Torme could write songs, too. This song is his! Merry Christmas, and God bless you and yours! 🙏🏻✝️🎄
His son, Steve March Torme has a tremendous voice. What treasures - two great talents (Mel and Steve Torne) and this timeless song.
Kind of learned about Mel, as a lot of guys my age, from Night Court. So many of them have passed; shows how old I am….
God! How I miss this man. I still have his autographed book in my collection.
When I get to heaven, I hope I get to hear him all the time
the way he sings it. I feel this is the song one listens to when alone for christmas.
Wonderful. What a voice. He makes Christmas for me and many thousands. Love him.
Just beautiful
What a wonderful talent and not only does he present it with the expertise he only does, but he allowed his friend and protege Mr. Nat King Cole to take part in presenting it as well!!! A genious!!

Watching him now on the Lucy Show.....2022.....What a talented dude..
When it comes to Christmas Song, Mel rules !
Another wonderful voice, lost to the ages!
That last note though…pipes still there in his 70s…Salute to you Mel! Harry knew what he was talking about 😉
My go to after a harrowing day of christmas shopping. Brings back the warm fuzzy feeling...
What a voice.
no one compares to Mel, whether singing or composing

Holy...that was INCREDIBLE. Classic Mel. Now guardian angel for all of us who sing. :)
simply stunning,
A unimaginable brilliantly well written classic.

This is really a WONDER! What a taste, what a sense of music... and a tiny tactfull touch of jazz

Quelle délicatesse, quel maitrise. Il mérite d'être connu d'avantage. Grand bravo.
MÊME niveau que old blue eyes SINATRA
