Do we see parallels between Elon Musk's and JD Vance's views on declining birth rates and conservatism. Their shared goals for social change through political affiliation are noteworthy, especially given Elon's substantial support for the Republican campaign.
Vance is a fan of a dystopian author by the name of Curtis Yarvin. He, Vance, was recommended by Sebastian Gorka, a strong supporter of Orban of Hungary.
Mitterrand had a great natality policy. In his first term, PCF was part of the government (and France was flooded with CIA assets as a result). That policy prevented tens of thousands of abortions, while preserving choice and paying most of the cost of elective abortion (but ALL the cost of childbearing, for all women). But no one ever talks about that. Hmm.
There's a big problem in this discussion of Liberalism. The classical notion of Liberalism, since John Locke, is about individual freedom which includes things like property rights. This form is very closely in line with modern Conservatism. On the other hand, Liberalism in America, as it has been used for the last century, is roughly the same as progressive political ideas and is socially oriented. You see the confusions here! Vance's ideas are a hybrid that ignores these conceptual positions. In particular, emphasizing social solutions to family issues is basically socialism, while Capitalism is really predicated on Classical Liberalism (Locke's ideas) and the supremacy of the individual ( business rights). And since the values of Capitalism are the status quo they are the essence of Conservatism. So this is just confused thinking. OR: Of course, if family rights are not granted as social rights, these could be imposed on citizens as obligations in a modern Theocratic state ( Iran) or secular Fascist state (Hungary). I had excluded this far fetched at first, but you can't underestimate the audacity of these people.
Why don't they point out that these ideas about women's place in the home and the advantages of traditional roles for women are among the hoariest old conservative talking points that exist. And this is supposed to be the creme de la creme of original, avant-garde ideas from conservative intellectuals?
A women’s role is whatever she damn chooses. The point made is similar to Elizabeth Warren’s in the Two Income Trap. We live in an economic order that demands both spouses work. The whole system is rigged against a woman who may want to be a stay at home mom by forcing her into the work place or risk economic insecurity.
Parents should be paid to have children. Once they turn 18, the kid should then receive the payments until age 22 while they obtain a free college education. That will convince more Americans to have children.
He thinks families are the building block of society and that more support should be given to them so that they have less insecurity. Unusual and weird indeed…. Not Democracy Now, but maybe the media likes to spin their own narratives
what is wrong with having pro family policies... there are a lot of things i hate vance for but PLEASE pivot to attacking his positions on abortion and foreign policy instead... most of us like pro family policies. As independents and progressives, are we allowed to agree with any of the views of these "thinkers"? While I disagree with their fascist solutions to perceived problems, I find a number of the problems they see as real and in need of solutions the left rejects out of hand. This tribal gang-think and the summary ex-communication from the fold for dissenters associated with it on either side appears as a portent to the end of critical thought. Wholesale acceptance of the policies of either side is rendered invalid by the dysfunctional state of the nation that has brought the nation and the world to its current state. (BTW, the guest's reportage here came across as objective and devoid of hyperbole or alarm. Amy consistently allows her guests freedom to express themselves as they wish. Very refreshing.)
Vance's Malthusianism isn't especially unusual, it's normal Conservatism. It's just that Malthus wasn't the final word on how to manage a society. They're calling themselves post Liberals, which just means they need a better name. Tentatively, post Neoliberal gets you closer. We've already had a historic post Liberal moment! It's when you update the terms that you start contextualizing Vance's views better. His Conservatism just tried to dismantle a government that is decidedly not Liberal, and utterly failed to do so! This is a new Conservatism that, after placing the burden for funding the government on work, and issuing as much debt as democracy can handle, has come to peace with a social safety net. It turns out that a big government with levers on social mobility, and severely constrained elections, works great for the elite in this society! So, what kind of system takes the democracy out of Socialism? Here, we're getting closer to a better name...
I don’t think you can talk about conservatives and such a manner if you don’t ever interview any of them. I just never understood that about outlets like democracy now. It doesn’t interview conservatives, but they come up with these theories and why conservatives believe and the things they believe in, you can learn a lot from somebody by talking to them. Not pretending like they don’t exist just because you don’t like their world views.
There is a huge amount of scientific research and investigative journalism about political conservatives and evangelical christians. You can go on sciencedirect yourself and see 10,000’s of papers.
Conservatives themselves are saying this stuff in public. You don't have to interview them to engage with and learn about the ideas that they public espouse. There's nothing "theoretical" about it. Engaging and critiquing their ideas isn't pretending like they don't exist. It's the total opposite. Your argument would make more sense if you were to just say, "bring them on and let them argue their case".
I was raised Roman Catholic, went to a Catholic middle school for several years, and was an altar boy for 4 years. A few months before my 17th birthday, I had an epiphany of sorts in one night of deep discussion with my best friend in which the entire edifice of my Catholic faith crumbled. In my mind I’ve revisited that discussion many times to check the soundness of my thinking and refine it. I could not put my Catholic beliefs and faith back together again. I’ve spent the remainder of my life searching for meaning and grappling with the mystery of existence and, although I’ve not adopted any comprehensive framework to hang my psycho-spiritual hat on, I’m still energized by the search which continues, in fits and starts, to this day at age 75. In rejecting Catholicism at 17, I didn’t do so angrily or with the certitude of the convert to a new creed. On the contrary, it was a bit like saying goodbye to a benign parental figure whose authority over my conceptions was revealed to be irreparably flawed. I nevertheless held certain ideas I’d been raised with in high regard, such as the Catholic emphasis on actually doing charitable works as opposed to giving the idea of charity lip service or fulfilling the obligation by throwing money at it. Sadly, I’ve lost respect entirely for the institution of the Church, as it has demonstrated in recent years, in various ways, its moral bankruptcy. Please beware of so-called Catholic “philosophers” like Deneen and adherents like Vance. Their project is to build a comprehensive framework of control over our lives, whether we like it or not.

When he felt the breeze blowing in Trump’s favor he stopped criticizing him and slavishly began sucking up to him. The birthrate wont go up till minimum wage does. Pple cant afford large families, and those who can have to work so hard their children are raised by daycares not parents
Sadly I know a number of families where the parents both make well over 150k and still have their children raised by others
Do we see parallels between Elon Musk's and JD Vance's views on declining birth rates and conservatism. Their shared goals for social change through political affiliation are noteworthy, especially given Elon's substantial support for the Republican campaign.

Read Catholic Social Teaching and stop guessing. It's about $23 hardcopy.
Vance is a fan of a dystopian author by the name of Curtis Yarvin. He, Vance, was recommended by Sebastian Gorka, a strong supporter of Orban of Hungary.
Civilized means to be nice and fake. Vance is honest from his point of view and he should be called barbarian instead of weird.
your mom is a weird barbarian
weird will also work
"A person from an alien land, culture, or group believed to be inferior, uncivilized, or violent?"
I'm trying to understand the point of this post.

It sounds like Margaret Atwood is an indirect influence as well. 🙏
The VOICE of this man. Eeeerrrr... eeeeerrrrrr... eeeeeerrrrrr....
DN should interview JD Vance.
As long as they discuss eyeliner application and the Handmaid's Tale by Maggie Atwood.
That's not how Democracy Now! operates, reporting the facts & interviewing truthful guests. EVIL doesn't get to spew their rhetoric on DN!
So Vance has “unusual” beliefs?
What might those be?
He thinks families are the building block of society and that more support should be given to them so that they have less insecurity.
Unusual and weird indeed….
Not Democracy Now, but maybe the media likes to spin their own narratives
Catholic beliefs, what a horrow 😱😱
what is wrong with having pro family policies...
there are a lot of things i hate vance for but PLEASE pivot to attacking his positions on abortion and foreign policy instead... most of us like pro family policies. A younger population creates a more progressive voter base, a healthier economy and a more prosperous society.

Cool graphic! Shows there IS something in Vance’s head!
You're over generalizing

Babies are important to continue life. Family friendly policies are lacking in the USA.
Here, we're getting closer to a better name...
kamalla buttguage might be just the ticket.

@@Michael-yg1qd thanks for that bigoted anti-Catholic comment
American women are fiercely independent. You are not going to be able to force them to have babies.

Who is JD Vance and what does he really believe
Vance strikes me as your typical political opportunist. He wet his finger and held it up to the wind. When he felt the breeze blowing in Trump’s favor he stopped criticizing him and slavishly began sucking up to him. His lack of any deeply held political convictions other than saying anything to gain power is the most disturbing thing about him in my opinion. There are many politicians like him on both sides of the political aisle.
Yarvin has some stunningly harebrained ideas about history, society and the solutions to these “problems”. He’s also extremely unimpressive to listen to. Vance should be embarrassed that he’s listed as an influence

For an informal true democracy, you're limited to a few hundred people, with one leadership group, optimistically.

Economically, you could build larger organizations from modular democratic teams.
