Tell me one thing, how's Chomsky an intellectual? His political dissidence is his unabashed opinion that has nothing to do with Linguistics (where he's actually a genius). How are Marx, Foucalt or any of these guys intellectuals?
Intellectuals are people with a vision, a pertinent world view they can back with data... All these people studying liberal arts in ivy leagues types with their tired tropes about society and an opinion to spout catering to a specific audience; and who lend themselves to be used by politicians. THEY'RE ABSOLUTELY USELESS and a huge waste of money.
Someone who's hands are on real data and storytelling; poll strategists, survey designers or some social intellectuals who at least present their arguments to test it with real world phenomena for merit. These are intellectuals! Left or Right, these liberal arts so called "intellectuals" are frauds that cost us dearly.

How can these people be called "pro-family" when every single thing they stand for undermines families. A decent minimum wage supports families. Paid family leave supports families. Quality public education supports families. Affordable health care supports families. Etc. What they mean by "pro-family" is heterosexual marriages where the man is in charge, the woman is at home having babies (rather than cats, apparently) and is doing as she is told and can neither leave nor control how many children she has. It is not pro-family. It is pro-patriarchy at its worst.

The New Republic, online/free, has an article by Gil Duran entitled "Where J.D. Vance gets his weird, terrifying techno ideas". In this article the author reports on discussions between Vance, Theil, and a techbro named Curtis Yarvin that include discussions of a massive surveillance state operating to control individual citizens and monitor their private lives Duran also reveals their plans for corporate serfdom where CEO's are the only local government, free to enact whatever brutal means of control necessary: this includes chopping off limbs, incarceration in solitary with "tech" psychological torture. They also examine genocide in these conversations. PLEASE READ THIS. VANCE IS NOT TRUMP'S PICK; He is chosen by the Heritage Foundation as Trump's successor. He is every bit as creepy has he seems but VERY MUCH MORE and this is the intended future of Project 2025. The Supreme Court has given immunity for everything: including the list of horrors enacted by the Naziis, but in a far darker and ultimately broader spectrum of evil, barbarity, and debauchery.

    • @davidmenasco5743

Thanks very much for the tip.
I think very few Americans can really get their heads around what these people have in store for the country, or the incredible import of the Supreme Court granting provisional, aka preemptive, immunity for all of it.
During the 20th century, much of Latin America was ruled by people with similarly brutal philosophies, and with support from the US foreign policy establishment.
In many of these countries, death squads and gruesome forms of torture were the norm.
This is what is at stake here now. These "New Right" people are grasping for rationalizations to gain acceptance to bring essentially these same methods to the US.

@@Lerian_V You'd have to read about or hear about some of the things that the right-wing dictators did in South America. It is impossible to exaggerate how vicious they were.
On one hand is the "disappearances." Which is a polite way of saying they committed mass murder in a way that the bodies could not be recovered. They systematically kidnapped political activists who opposed them, and dropped them into the ocean from helicopters. These have been widely reported on and are well known to those who have taken an interest over the years.
Also widely reported is the rampant torture of political opponents. What has been less widely reported is the gratuitous torture of people who were not deeply involved in politics. The cases I read about were described by Noam Chomsky.
He described a case where a woman's teeth were all pulled out, and then they were stuffed back into her open mouth and her lips sewed shut.
As I recall, plastic surgeons often took part in these atrocities.

There's a big problem in this discussion of Liberalism. The classical notion of Liberalism, since John Locke, is about individual freedom which includes things like property rights. This form is very closely in line with modern Conservatism.
On the other hand, Liberalism in America, as it has been used for the last century, is roughly the same as progressive political ideas and is socially oriented.
You see the confusions here! Vance's ideas are a hybrid that ignores these conceptual positions. In particular, emphasizing social solutions to family issues is basically socialism, while Capitalism is really predicated on Classical Liberalism (Locke's ideas) and the supremacy of the individual ( business rights). And since the values of Capitalism are the status quo they are the essence of Conservatism. So this is just confused thinking.
OR: Of course, if family rights are not granted as social rights, these could be imposed on citizens as obligations in a modern Theocratic state ( Iran) or secular Fascist state (Hungary). I had excluded this far fetched at first, but you can't underestimate the audacity of these people.

Vance's Malthusianism isn't especially unusual, it's normal Conservatism.
It's just that Malthus wasn't the final word on how to manage a society.
They're calling themselves post Liberals, which just means they need a better name.
Tentatively, post Neoliberal gets you closer. We've already had a historic post Liberal moment!
It's when you update the terms that you start contextualizing Vance's views better.
His Conservatism just tried to dismantle a government that is decidedly not Liberal, and utterly failed to do so!
This is a new Conservatism that, after placing the burden for funding the government on work, and issuing as much debt as democracy can handle, has come to peace with a social safety net.
It turns out that a big government with levers on social mobility, and severely constrained elections, works great for the elite in this society!
So, what kind of system takes the democracy out of Socialism?
Here, we're getting closer to a better name...

I don’t think you can talk about conservatives and such a manner if you don’t ever interview any of them. I just never understood that about outlets like democracy now. It doesn’t interview conservatives, but they come up with these theories and why conservatives believe and the things they believe in, you can learn a lot from somebody by talking to them. Not pretending like they don’t exist just because you don’t like their world views.

Conservatives themselves are saying this stuff in public. You don't have to interview them to engage with and learn about the ideas that they public espouse. There's nothing "theoretical" about it. Engaging and critiquing their ideas isn't pretending like they don't exist. It's the total opposite.
Your argument would make more sense if you were to just say, "bring them on and let them argue their case".

I was raised Roman Catholic, went to a Catholic middle school for several years, and was an altar boy for 4 years. A few months before my 17th birthday, I had an epiphany of sorts in one night of deep discussion with my best friend in which the entire edifice of my Catholic faith crumbled. In my mind I’ve revisited that discussion many times to check the soundness of my thinking and refine it. I could not put my Catholic beliefs and faith back together again. I’ve spent the remainder of my life searching for meaning and grappling with the mystery of existence and, although I’ve not adopted any comprehensive framework to hang my psycho-spiritual hat on, I’m still energized by the search which continues, in fits and starts, to this day at age 75. In rejecting Catholicism at 17, I didn’t do so angrily or with the certitude of the convert to a new creed. On the contrary, it was a bit like saying goodbye to a benign parental figure whose authority over my conceptions was revealed to be irreparably flawed. I nevertheless held certain ideas I’d been raised with in high regard, such as the Catholic emphasis on actually doing charitable works as opposed to giving the idea of charity lip service or fulfilling the obligation by throwing money at it. Sadly, I’ve lost respect entirely for the institution of the Church, as it has demonstrated in recent years, in various ways, its moral bankruptcy.
Please beware of so-called Catholic “philosophers” like Deneen and adherents like Vance. Their project is to build a comprehensive framework of control over our lives, whether we like it or not.

When he felt the breeze blowing in Trump’s favor he stopped criticizing him and slavishly began sucking up to him. His lack of any deeply held political convictions other than saying anything to gain power is the most disturbing thing about him in my opinion. There are many politicians like him on both sides of the political aisle.

There's room to be creative here. Maybe we should be voting for cabinets, instead of individuals.
For an informal true democracy, you're limited to a few hundred people, with one leadership group, optimistically.
Here, I think workplaces could be better organized into democratic teams.
Economically, you could build larger organizations from modular democratic teams.
Also, there's all kinds of opportunities for pro democratic regulation of social media.
