Buying an Apple product used to be a fairly straightforward affair. Now it's gotten so complicated that an entire TH-cam industry has been built around trying to untangle the myriad overlaps and options. Problem here is that after watching this video I am even more confused than I was before.

No, you're not just getting a bump in GPU cores when going from the top Pro to the base Max. You're also getting a second media engine, literally cutting export times in half for supported video codecs

    • @VMYeahVN
      @VMYeahVN หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Those supported codecs are only h.264, HEVC (h.265), ProRes, and ProRes Raw though. Most video editing pros are just as often, if not more often, working with proprietary Raw formats like RED camera R3D files, or raw Canon or Sony cinema camera files that are not supported by the media engine. The media engine has to brute force those (which is still helped by going from Pro to Max chip just not always linear double). So export times are not always cut in half across the board as there are lots of variables depending on what an editors specific workflow is and what cameras they are working with. Kinda wish more tech TH-camrs talked about that and tested it more in their videos. Hopefully some will once these new Macs are in everyone's hands.

Oops, now you’ve just made me think twice about the configuration I was just about to order. I thought the absolute best deal for me was the MB Pro with 14/20, 48GB memory and a 1TB SSD… Then I saw some comments on YT about the Pro Max with the 14/32, 36GB memory would be best for video editing.
So now you gotta help me. This is of course a more expensive option but I’m upgrading from an M1 Mac Mini because I realized I needed a laptop after all. Since I usually buy a machine that’ll last me long, and I’m editing video a lot, it would be a thing to do. But my editing is not more than 2-3 cameras 4K footage and no fancy effects, and I’m also editing photos in various apps (no Adobe products) where I noticed my M1 Mini (w.16GB memory) struggled frequently.
So is the GPU that significantly better in the Max (at 14/32) compared to the Pro (14/20) for me?
I'm also thinking about the longevity when all the apps and MacOS are getting their upgrades in the future.
The Unified memory is also an issue here, I tend to use many apps at the same time when I go wild on my computer and 48GB on the Pro is more than 32GB on the Max option....

Unfortunately, these are the highest available RAM sizes that Apple allows us to customize for these two processors even though they are designed to handle more RAM. I wouldn't even be able to get 48GB RAM with the top of line M4 Max (16 core CPU/40 core GPU). I would have to get 64GB RAM.
What are you all thinking is the best approach here? Get more RAM size with the M4 Pro or get more GPU processing power with a smaller RAM size with the M4 Max? The base M4 Max RAM does have 1.5x the bandwidth speed, but still 12GB less in size, so I'm thinking the bandwidth speed here is negligible.
So this brings me to do I want more GPU processing power or RAM. Thought?

Someone please🙏 explain, If only I could understand how this unifaite memory is spent: how much video memory is needed for the graphics cores, and how much is left for the "RAM"? And again, the bandwidth is different for the M4pro (273), but 48GB, and the 20‑core GPU, M4Max (410), but 36GB unified memory and 32‑core GPU.
And this neural engine, how much does it need? This is driving me crazy.Where is the trap?

I wouldn't really say that Apple is "Forcing" you to this much memory that you stress a lot in this video. This is unified memory and the larger and smaller gpu core counts is what would be determining the amount of memory you get. GPU cores need a specific amount of memory dedicated to them in order to perform operations correctly. GPUs process data differently than a CPU where memory can be a bit more flexible. GPUs don't necessarily have this luxury and need more specific dedicated amounts of memory to compute properly.

There are numerous videos about how various M4 Macs might perform. Some 'reviewers' have never seen or touched an M4 Mac, others might have one but cannot report anything themselves, so there are leaks which may or may not be genuine. But in a week or so there should be more dependable reporting once actual M4 Macs are delivered or NDAs expire. But we cannot resist looking now, even at the reports of M4 Ultra machines which may never exist.
For me it's all academic, as my main use revolves around standard business applications, particularly spreadsheets. I'm unique amongst Mac owners as I don't edit video and wouldn't know how to. Thus the need for speed, storage space and memory are easily satisfied by the lowest spec M series Mac. Even so my main machine is a basic M1 Mac Studio, bought in March 2022 and I can't ever see any operational reason to upgrade it.
But its fun to speculate, as long as I don't spend any money!

    1. I too despise the forced upgrades.
    2. You neglected to mention the difference in memory bandwith that is especially important when using unified memory. If there is a bandwidtth bottleneck, the cpu and gpu performance does not matter...like a traffic jam where the powerful cpu and gpu are waiting to process the data, but with not enough lanes for the data to get there in time. The increased memory bandwidth on the max will all but eliminate those bottlenecks = delays.
