    Thanks for real honest videos. I am in Adelaide and my garden got neglected and then I did some low cuts and applied some slow release fertilizer and start daily watering and now it is coming off well. I did not know actually what worked and only realized what work for Buffalo lawns. I am very thankful that u are very honest and do try to promote products and unnecessary work with machine hires etc. I have a cheap lawn mover and not sure if I need to upgrade but it does the job for as I can see. Second thing is how much watering Buffalo lawn need. SA is much hotter and less rain

    • @theaussielawn
      @theaussielawn  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the kind words mate, I always strive to give honest opinions in all I do on the channel. As for the watering question. At the height of summer the rule of thumb is 25-30mm of water each week done over 2 seperate waterings and slowly backing off as it cools down again

    Great video Brenton, I used to cut my buffalo low (with a cylinder mower) but you have convinced me to let it grow. I’m now cutting it at about 30mm and looking much better. Thanks.

    • @dchall8
      @dchall8 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I mow mine at 100 mm and even with that I'll miss a week or three between cuts. I like it really tall. At another house I experimented and found it will grow up to 800 mm before it stops growing. Side note: at 800 mm it no longer needs to be watered or fertilized, because the roots are so deep there's always water and nutrients down that deep. It goes months without water and then it rains. Also, no, there were no pests (snakes, rodents, etc.) in the tall grass.

    Thank you for your episodes on Sir Walter. I am in SEQ and have had SW for 17 years , and never scalped it. Come spring 2021 I am going to knock mine back like you did with the Reno in Nov. thank you for the insights it has given me confidence to give it a go. Also appreciate the fertiliser info, I will look for this locally as it’s quite a bit cheaper than what I have been buying.

    Planned to scalp my 10 year old sir Walter in Brisbane this weekend…order fertiliser…check…start knocking it down…check,,,find old two Stoke victa for the serious scalp..not so much. Getting a bush ranger utility mower so see how it goes as my four year old Honda still has 27mm of material standing. Giving it a core aeration as well as after rebuilding yay house from the 2011 floods a lot of clay from boring out for concrete foundations got spread over the yard. Here’s hoping and praying the 20-30mm of rain forecast comes at end of the day not the beginning..thanks doe this and the ‘massacre’ video. Informative and helpful…and if i kill the whole it’s only grass.

    You’re right about the half mulch half catch option on other models.
    If you’re cutting fine leaf varieties, it all ends up in the catcher and if you’re cutting larger leaf lawns like buffalo, it just clogs up the back end and it all mulches.
    I use the hrx 217 (the plastic one) for work and it’s an awesome machine.
    Used to use hru 216 and one noticeable difference is the maximum height of cut. hrx max is about 25mm higher than hru max which is perfect for buffalo in winter.

    Excellent follow up to the renovation video. Thanks. I'm targeting April to scalp my lawn near San Antonio. Last week we had two nights with temps of -15C so I'm not totally confident the grass will return.
    At 4:15 you show the hell strip after scalping. When you see St Aug pull back from concrete like that, it's either a watering problem or chinch bugs. The owners were most likely not watering deep enough on that strip and the hot concrete in summer baked the moisture out of the nearby soil. I see that a little in the present day video at all the concrete interfaces. They should be watering 25 mm, all at one time, every week in the summer.
    The best herbicide for St Augustine/buffalo is anything that contains atrazine. Don't know if you can get it in AU. It seems to kill all the broadleafs and most of the grasses (but not couch/bermuda). Apply after the 4th mow in spring and a month before the first fertilizer of spring.

    15 years in that business in California in the 80's and 90's. I'll be frank and say I'm not at all a fan of how you trim the edges along the walkway and driveway. I used a powered blade edger which made for a nice clean edge right at the concrete. What you have is a steep beveled edge which, in my opinion, doesn't look nearly as good. Even when I did use a string trimmer along that type or any other edge I wouldn't make such a steep angle. I kept the edge as vertical as possible.

    Hi Brenton. Really enjoyed your video. This may be a beginner Buffalo question. I have over an acre of green stuff on the NSW Central Coast which ranges from a paddock to slash and all kinds of grass. However we do have really nice Sir Walter around our pool area which I guess is about the size of a normal back yard. I mow most of my place with a Greenfield ride-on but mow the Buffalo, which is about 5 years old, with my old Honda HRU216D. Am I meant to do this restoration process regularly, if at all? I don't like the idea of not having nice grass through the Summer swimming season and you recommended doing it late Spring. Cheers, Pete

      Hi Pete thanks for tuning in and thanks for your question. If you are currently satisfied with how your buffalo is performing then no I would not worry about it. I'm in San Antonio and have been fully organic since 2002. The reason I switched was the fungal problems with St Aug. Local radio host suggested using ordinary corn meal at 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet (10 kilos per 100 sq meters for Oz). I was pleasantly surprised that 3 weeks later I had a full growth of grass where none, NONE, had been growing before. I fully converted and committed that day. I've been using it successfully every year since then. You should be able to find corn meal at a local feed store for under $10 per 50 pound bag.

      Hi Kaye, In a nut shell there is no chemicals on the market to control couch grass in a buffalo lawn, As buffalo is a home lawn variety limited money is invested into selective chemical controls. Where as couch grass is widely used in the sporting area there is much more time and money invested into developing chemicals to control other grass types from it.
