You and your website have become a significant haven for me. What I run on my Sorcerer tank is 5 pieces Catalyst, because I love how engaging and impactful it is, and light armor, and Crimson Oath on my backbar to proc it with my armor buff. As a monster set I use the Arch Druid and then either Death Dealers Fete, Esoteric Greaves (broken against bosses with few adds) or just a Trainee piece. I like to play my tank more as a battlemage, and I combine this with Altmer for the 5% damage reduction whilst heavy attacking. (Thanks to my big shield, I can just shake off all damage, and only need to block the most dangerous attacks that have a cc attached to them) This makes me very self sufficient, as I need no healer or self healing in any vet dungeons or trials, and often I even use the Twilight Matriarch to heal allies.
For harder content, staying alive is the most important goal I have in tanking and most are Pickup Groups where you don't have coordination and everyone else is just trying to do stuff as fast as possible. If your're dead, you can't tank anymore and unless someone rezzes you, the group wipes. Your suggestions are almost all about buffing damage and if you have a group that you know all the roles and heals and buffs are there, and it works, that's ok. But after tanking for years as my primary role, I find it is best to be armored up and buff armor and health. Presently, in harder content, I use Hatchling's Shell, Imperium and Lord Warden or Mighty Chudan if necessary, on head and shoulders. Also, if I am at 50% health in a group, I'm gonna be dead soon so those sets that kick in at 50% are pretty much worthless. I still love all the insights you give for tanking and obviously, you are on a level that everyday, hard-working tanks haven't achieved.
I think these are very good sets for coordinated raids. However when pugging in random vet dungeons, wearing selfish sets were always easier for me as a tank. People not knowing mechanics and dying/wiping it's better to stay alive and res people than starting over even if it takes longer to kill the bosses. Tanking is the hardest job in ESO
Yea most of the time for support players you’ll see content creators put up builds that are BIS/META for organized groups specifically. Always tailor everything to how you play the game and who you play with daily :)
Well said! Not enough players understand this, not everyone is running coordinated raids. Staying alive is often better than providing buffs for players who are going to die in their random vet daily anyways lol.
Just back in game after a year or so away. Today I played 3 random vet dungeon groups in a row and all of them had fake healers, so as a pug tank self heals and and good damage shields seem a must, to hell with non-selfishness in sets and builds with pugs.
I've gotten almost all of my Vet Dungeon achievements on my tank thanks to your videos and advice. A lot of Tri-runs the first time trying some dungeons on vet, too.
When I first started playing ESO, I played with 2 other people and we used to 3-man base game and some DLC dungeons. 2 dps (Sorc and DK) with no healing between them (the Sorc had the dmage shield). I played Templar so I could Tank and Heal (plus I love the RP of a Paladin). I had to run selfish sets to buff my health and armour as I dumped all stat points into Magicka to buff my healing. It was the most fun I've had in group gaming - having to keep control of the boss and its adds as well as heal the idiots who didnt get out of the giant red circle on the ground. Still main the Templar, but switched to a solo build cos questing as a Tank sucks, then switch back to a tank set up for dungeons. About to take my first stab at the Infinite Archive now that I've finally acquired the full Deadly Strike set.
An honorable mention for beginners is Akiviri Dragonguard: Farmable overland in Eastmarch or generally pretty cheap to buy from traders. Lower cost ulti generally means more ulti meaning more group damage
wow so nothing has changed in the last year that’s crazy and cool if i decide to come back cause i still have all those set. you’re videos are great! thank you
Yeah tank is hard I'm a new player but at least they bring me in when I'm trying to do random dungeons I got a DPS build and all I do is wait and when you do mess up they let you know don't they usually by kicking you I'm glad I'm bald headed nice video thank you give me something to go for
In my DK i go with weapon, shield an juwlery „Rushing Agony“ and my heavy armour is „Brands of imperium“ Monsterset is „Engineguard“ Workshop Fine i my groups and for my playstyle
Claw orfYoln was a staple tank set a few years back. Is it time to delete it now that I have all the other sets in your video? No mention of Magma Incarnate monster set. Delete it too?
Yoln nowadays is less present because of the arcanist class having the skill “Zena’s Empowering disc”, which provides Minor Courage just like yol does. Having a arcanist dps run this one skill for the whole group is easy and makes it possible for the tanks to run another 5-piece set. Same argument for Magma Incarnate that also gives minor courage. With the class meta currently, you’re always going to have at least one arcanist dps. Even an arcanist tank can do this.
Idk if someone needs to read this. So.. Ima don't like meta, and i'm fully embracing those strange builds. For once i had a tank fully relying on puncture. I took knight erants, tremorrscale and masters snd. for the backbar though i had assault (so i could buff my group at least somehow). And that was nb, before his heals where buffed. And it worked good. I had self heal all the time while doing some damage, debuffing enemies and buffing alies.
So it's safe to deconstruct my Gold Aegis of Galenwe set? I farmed it after watching one of your original videos years ago. I still have Ebon for niche scenarios, but Tormentor got deleted after the last patch. I literally cannot keep all tank sets I might need to use on my tank (along with the necessary potions and foods) in the inventory of one character.
How do you know whether sets affect group members or not if not specificslly stated? Such as Torug's Pact 5th bonus doesn’t include "group" in it. And how do you know if sets will crit or not?
Sets only affect group members if it's specifically stated. Torug's Pact benefits the group indirectly. It affects only you, buffing your enchants. But if these enchantments then help the group, like Crusher lowering the enemies' resistances, then Torug indirectly buffs your group's damage as well.
I know it can be frustrating. I do wish that the easier to use sets like Sax and Pearl were a bit more accessible so more newer Tanks could use them also!
It is mentioned in the video - Ebon & Worm would be my basegame sets after crafted gear but they are not that useful in todays game, you are very limited on options. Make sure to look out for the ESO+ Free Weekends and utilise those for some of the other gear which you'll gain access too for a short time
Pearlescent ward or lucent echos (after it comes out) on body with either olorime (no healer) or powerful assault (healer present) on the back bar. Monster set could be archdruid or 1 piece magma incarnate with spaulder on shoulder. For the front bar a solid option would be vateshran s&b to make grouping the adds easier or you could do masters s&b instead for extra survivability. If you’re an arcanist masters s&b isn’t as useful since you’ll probably be using the arcanist taunt so instead you could just do 1 pc trainee with 1 pc druids braid to have that extra health on your front bar so that your burst heal is a little stronger since it scales with health
Depends on your group setup - I just did it with Archdruid, Powerful Assault body, Olorime Weapons/Jewellery and Master Weapons but going with Pearlescent body would work then PA/Olo Link to see the run: x.com/thetankclub/status/1790451773917872422?s=46&t=pFX9wuPw_-4uNzSNeJk3kw

For the damage reduction when group members die - is that on all group members that are still alive, or just on self (Tank)?
Its on everyone in group that is still alive.
