    as the daughter of a carpenter who specialises in home reno, it always amuses/saddens me how much people underestimate how disruptive building works are - always take longer than you think, cause more problems and mess than you think, and are noisier and take up more space... I'm glad I'm prepared!
    also when Jessie said a skylight was important to her, I was so sure she was going to say it was because she wanted something more interesting than a ceiling to look at when she was lying on the floor 😆

      About the skylight - I thought so too! :-D I immediately pictured Jessica lying on the floor and wanting to look at nature.

      Yeah, lol when we got an extension our builder misread the measurements made by the architect and we ended up with a really low ceiling so we had to make a step down and hollow out the floor, then we were told that our previously already completely wheelchair inaccessible house was not allowed to have the step because wheelchairs couldnt then use it (even though a wheelchair user would not be able to get through the front door already) so we werent allowed to make the step, luckily that was resolved when the council man just drew a fake ramp onto the housing plan and said now it's fine 😂😂

      Building construction can be like that, (with pre-fabricated sections that slot together like lego) but renovations are usually fiddly and require custom construction.)

      I think it’s where they are taking up floors and redoing openings and knocking down walls etc but it’s fairly normal for plaster to crack at the slightest shift and doors to not hang right - the builders should sort it all before they leave and it will all need to be signed off and stable so don’t worry it’s normal xx

    • @jamieo2147
      @jamieo2147 4 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Fun fact some old artex contains asbestos. It's fine as long as it's not disturbed but don't start smashing it into dust or sanding it without checking. Just have it smoothed over by a plasterer. The house has shifted due to it being propped and the supporting wall removed. Make sure the builders do make good and make it level. I lived in a house where the floor had shifted so much that my toy trains couldn't climb the hill that was my bedroom floor as it was too steep and my bed would roll a foot off the wall every day and I would have to push it back.

      I have to admit, the size of the split in that wall shocked me. They will need to put new lintel in, as well as polyfiller. But when you are remodeling a house downstairs, (especially if you are knocking walls through) it is known to affect the upper floors. Although I agree entirely that they should document all of the occurrences, and maybe ask an independent surveyor to inspect the work before signing it off. Word of advice to Jessica and Claudia, check the loft to make sure that none of the roof beams have shifted or become unseated, it can happen easier than you think.

    Finally construction knowledge comes in handy outside of work. 😂
    To achieve that sort of texture, there's a variety of ways to achieve this. Most bumpy "popcorn" textures are a mixture of a drywall compound usually termed "mud" and some sort of grainy add in to give the bumps. These can range from adding a bag of sand into this mud to small bits of styrofoam to then be sprayed on to achieve the bumpy texture.
    There are some other techniques that could mimick that style that are done with specific types of brushes and rollers, but I would guess just based from the small video clips, it looks like a sand and a mud mixture was sprayed.
    The benifit to this style, it typically softens a bit of sound and light so there's no harsh glare, or not a high level of reverberance in the room. This can also hide small imperfections or give a room a different sort of look.

      @@squiggles7833 some popcorn ceiling s were made with aspestos so yeah, unless you know 100% it was safe it would have been a risk if it ever cracked.
      It's also healthier because all that texture holds dust, even with 100% safe materials used it's a textured surface.

    • @wildscotsman1
      @wildscotsman1 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      The coating on their ceiling is Artex which was very popular in the UK some years back. It's a powder mix which is sold as either hot water or cold water added. Once mixed it can be brushed on and then there are various tools for creating the effect you would like. Most are like Jess and Claudia's, which is a stipple effect, but some are combed into fan shapes and many other designs. Removing it is messy, but the most effective and safe procedure is to use a steam wallpaper remover and then scrape off the Artex, which once wet it will come off easily. As for asbestos, there can be around 1% content, prior to 1985, but thereafter it is asbestos free. Testing is important prior to removal and removal should be carried out by skilled tradesmen.

    About compostable things: most compostable things are only well compostable in industrial composts, where everything is well controlled. They often don't degrade well in home composts. This is the case for compostable plastic bags for example.

    • @annacolb2753
      @annacolb2753 4 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      What your saying is quite true. In addition compostable plastic bags usually don't degrade in industrial composters either because they need about two weeks longer than the average composte. Therefor it will be shredded and shiped out befor the plastic is propperly decomposed and this is a huge reason for microplastics on fields.

    • @elisecollins8467
      @elisecollins8467 4 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      I've done the compostable plastic bags at home before, but it took them a good year to finish composting. Which, that's fine for me. I don't really get very dedicated in the use of my compost as far as intentionally fertilizing plants with it and whatnot. I just sort of have a compost pile where I let things break down and the soil slowly leaks out to the surrounding area.

    • @LifeLostSoul
      @LifeLostSoul 4 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      It was cheaper and faster than possibly having to make a ceiling that was perfectly flat and showed it's imperfections.
      Popcorn ceilings easily finished a ceiling.
      Depending on how old the ceiling is they could have contain asbestos, but that's like all building materials. Is it's if it's old enough it will either contain asbestos, arsenic, lead or all of them.
      Here is a good short documentary on popcorn ceilings.

      @@rosequill7925 Drywalling it flat takes times, technique and precision. Putting a texture on it that hides the fact that it's not perfectly flat, is faster and cheaper.
      It doesn't start flat before they put the popcorning on.
      I also assume in older homes they were added after repairs to ceilings to make it look uniform. But that's a guess...
      I don't think they were ever in fashion for homeowners but just for builders where it was lower cost.

      Popcorn ceilings can also insulate to an extent, so it helps with soundproofing and keeping heat, though it doesn't really do either very well, but it's kinda known for it for some reason, so people believe it.
      Of course, if you want to do more than just paint it (like, if its in a bathroom and has superficial mold that won't wash off or something) it has to be done professionally, assuming you want to keep the texture. It also frequently contains large amounts of lead or asbestos, and holds onto all manner of allergens, so I don't understand why anyone actually wants it. Even if it were effective insulation, the cons far outweigh the pros.

    Talking about homes we grew up in and wallpaper. The house I grew up in was from the mid 1860s (american Civil war era) and one day my Mom decided she didn't like the wall paper in the dinning room so she started to peel it off. 2 1/2 inches of wallpaper (and many different decades of interior design later) we decided to stop because were not sure if there was a wall or if it was just wallpaper between the kitchen and dining room.

    In the USA we call that Popcorn Ceiling. It was popular in the 60s & 70s. It is achieved by taking a blower, filling it with fiber glass, and literally blowing said fiberglass into the wet paint on the ceiling. Sometimes they paint over it, but if it isn't if can sometimes sparkle.

    The way they get popcorn ceilings and walls is that they use a sprayer to spray plaster onto the surface. A more fashionable way to do this is to do knock down. This is where you take a tool to knock the tips off of the plaster so that the wall/ceiling has texture but isn't pointy. The wall is then painted over in a color of your choice.

    Texture on ceilings absorbs and breaks up sound and light. It is also forgiving of imperfections. Texture is applied with a type of stamping brush or roller. High areas in the texture can be "knocked down" with the edge of a trowel and lightly sanded. Much like with faux finishes, it takes technique and skill to look nice. It would then be painted with a thicker knap roller than what is used for smoothe surfaces. Popcorn ceiling texture is usually applied with an instrument called a hopper. New popcorn is best painted using a spray device, or removed by moistening and scraping.

    As far as the ceiling texture goes, I know of three ways that's done (at least in America). One is literally tapping the ceiling with a sponge or rag with texture material on it - you were spot on with that. Another is the use of a large compressor that sprays the thick texture material onto the wall. The last way is that some people use thick paint on a textured paint roller. People get creative. I'm sure my list isn't comprehensive. I'm very excited to see what the house looks like once its all complete! Great choices for the Georgian windows and prairie doors - that will look beautiful and timeless. I love the idea of renovating and intend to do the same once I own a home. Really, I hope that someday I may have enough money to design my own home and have it constructed (I'm a civil engineer, so that helps a bit). Thanks for sharing so much of your lives with us :)

    Artex was ridiculously popular in the 80s. Its like a kind of plaster. The type on your ceiling would just be like a paint roller. That's a fairly mild one. You'd have shells and swirls carved into this stuff. It wasn't cheap to put up but it meant you never had to decorate again, just paint it when you wanted to change colours.

We have done remodels over the years, and the word "inconvenient" doesn't even come close--a kitchen remodel wherein I would "put" dishes and glassware into a non-existent sink breaking items that hit the bottom. Moving the refrigerator and microwave into the living room was quite convenient [at least for the Super Bowl catching the game AND commercials]!! The set-up for your kitchen seems really user-friendly with everything well within reach. I wish we had an island/sink so I could pull a stool/chair under it so I could chop, mince, etc. without putting a strain on my back. It was the noise, noise, noise plus the vibrations from drilling under the house that drove me nuts. I know it will be lovely when finished. Have a good weekend to both of you!! 😁💗

    As a son of a builder and someone who has worked on many buildings and homes I'd say the one thing people aren't prepared for is the amount of dust building work makes. You can try your best to keep the dust out by sealing doors and holes but it will always finds its way in. If you don't want something getting dusty it's best to hide it as far away from the building work as possible.

    There was construction on an apartment complex across the street from ours, and with the lock down, we couldn't go anywhere to escape from it. It was awful. Lock down got stricter and it stopped, and it was lovely. Then construction was allowed to resume, so we moved, to a lovely house with a lemon tree. Airplane noise, but I would choose airplanes to construction any day.

    Specialized rollers (long furry things) and a thin type of plaster to apply popcorn ceiling. Still no idea why it is EVERYWHERE, but it's in older canadian and US houses too.

    I just watched a random video on Airtech/popcorn ceilings! They became super common because it's an easy way to cover up imperfections in the ceiling. It's made by spraying the ceiling with a long hose. They've been linked to asbestos, though, so be careful if you want to get rid of it!

    Ooof, I know how you feel with the drilling. There has been construction in the apartment above ours for over a year (they always say it will be done in a few weeks but then in a couple of months they just start up again) and it literally sounds like they are jackhammering directly above my head! Hope your construction finishes quickly so you can enjoy your house 😋

    Last November we had a kitchen extension as well. It was only finished in Feb but I can see so many similarities. We too thought our living room/kitchen would be nice but it was so cramped and noisy so that was funnnn (not). Luckily we weren't home for most of the drilling though.

    When the building is done and before you put in the furniture, take a few minutes to do Sound of Music spins in the rooms. It's fun, and a good memory to keep.

    Textured ceilings are supposed to help soundproof or reduce echos and improve acoustics, but they were also cheap and forgiving because they didn't have to be even.

    I can totally relate with Claudia's story with the wallpapered walls. In my bedroom the people before us wallpapered ever surface of our house, and apparently there was a 15 year-old in my room and as I peeled off the wallpaper I got to see all their phases as they grew up, from the top layer of pure black to the bottom one of yellow duckies-- it was interesting.

    You two are so cute! I remember when we moved to this house I live in right now and first few months it was a building site like yours is now. So much dust that it really triggered my asthmatic symptoms and finally got re-diagnosed with it. Plus we didn’t even have a bath or shower at one point so did the dishes in the bathroom sink which was SO difficult! No kitchen for weeks on end was frustrating as hell. Plus most of our furniture was in storage.

    We call the ceiling stuff "popcorn" in the States. You buy plaster with bumps in it of varrying size and mush it up there with spatulas and sponges. I've done some touching-up with it.

    That ceiling was popular in the 1950-60’s. It was done with different brushes, sometimes even a broom. It will all look wonderful in time! Just FYI I have been watching you since you had just 10k subscribers, you’ve just got better and better!

    I understand how terrible and annoying the drilling and dust from remodeling can get. They recently remodeled my workplace which involved weeks of drilling into the concrete - all during working hours. You couldn't think straight. And no amount of plastic curtains were good enough to keep the dust contained. There were days I would blow my dose and it would just be gray from all the dust I'd inhaled. I'm so glad that's over now. I can't even imagine what it would be like living in the situation and not having the ability to leave.

    I really loved you doing the presenter's tour. So glad that you are able to use hacks for washing the dishes. I have had to use the bathtub to wash the dishes when we had a major leak in our back kitchen. Not very fun for most, but I had a blast( easy to entertain me)😎

    I had to have a section of concrete floor ground smooth and the dust took 3 days to clean up. I got so discouraged and emotional halfway through that I started crying. Don't leave curtains up and carry your furniture out if you can. The dust goes everywhere and takes hours to settle. You will therefore end up vacuming the same surfaces multiple times.

    Oh you wanna talk artex ceilings? My living room in my house, all 4 walls were artexed and it looked awful. After the plasterer chopped some of the larger nibs off in order to skim the wall, we found out that they had had blue and red painted on the artex walls. No accounting for personal taste, eh

    The wallpaper thing amuses me. I had the same thing in my bedroom. 10layers of paper. Took us all the way back to when the building was first rented. Amusingly we knew the previous tenants (their daughter was in my class). So we saw the layers of wallpaper for her nursery and what it was before.

      My aunt inherited her house from my grandparents and when painting the bathroom discovered that the walls used to be a hot pink sort of color. Turned out when my grandparents first painted the bathroom they wanted a soft pink and the color came out wrong and they didn't want to pay for more paint.
