I had always thought that I did not want tension in my ambient works, because I want it to be calming. However, your example still had that calming effect along with a certain amount of tension. I like it. Always good to learn something new.
I started to watch the first episode around 2 weeks ago, now i am at number 15 and it's such a great pleasure to listen and learn how to play music with Chords of Orion every day ! Thank you very much for all of this. Dominic from Paris France
Great stuff Bill! I really like the calm laconic way you explain what you do - 9ths are something that Andy Summers (The Police) used to add as and when needed to enhance a tune (Tea in the Sahara - ambient style - Every Breath You Take used arpeggios with added 9ths -being 2 examples)
Another great video. Kudos! 9ths and added 2nds certainly are lovely. For me, music is about contrasts, i.e. tension AND release. Perhaps in a future video, you might wish to show different ways to resolve the tension of 9th dyads. Playing a few in a row is great for adding tension through ambiguity of key or of chord quality. Just don't forget the resolution for that ambient Ahhhhhhhh! :-)
Winston Joel I don't mention it in the video, but in the description, you will find that I used an inexpensive Line 6 AMPLIFi FX100 for this video. You can definitely use inexpensive gear and get some good sounds.
I know it's an old lesson but it's the best on the subject. Can you tell me how to approach this in relation to a key center? I use a lot of 3rds and 6ths in different strings to harmonize melodies. I noticed that if I try the same approach with 9ths I stumble upon some very dissonant minor 9th intervals (if I strictly follow the key I'm in). Would you simply avoid using the degrees where that happens or try notes outside the key and then use major 9ths only?
do you think at some point you could do videos like this that go a little more depth into the theory of chords and intervals? Also amazing video as always keep it up and thank you!!!
Yeah, I think that would make sense to dig in a little more. I've got a few videos queued up, but will start thinking about this. Thanks for the suggestion!
i think the most important effects is delay and reverb, nice amp, and a volume pedal (optional but very important for swelling; from what i've learned, swelling is fade in and fade out effect sounding.. like keyboard pad sounds) .. and a compressor (optional) .. some people use chorus, a little dirt section like drive or overdrive but the most important thing is delay and reverb, and a lot of ambient musician use two delays, stacking each other to fill some hollow point on their sound's length and for some nice backing tone..
I would encourage you to check out some of my demo videos where I cover some of the effects that I like. But basically, I use a compressor, a volume pedal and 1 or 2 delays stacked together. I like the Strymon Timeline, Strymon DIG and TC Electronic Flashback Triple Delay. I don't use an amp, but like the Avid Eleven Rack amp modeling unit.

The 6th string 9th interval I LOVE. Sounds like it would be wicked for an intro in a lot of genres
Another top lesson Bill.Your certainly changing the way i play and think about guitar (in a very good way).Thank you.
You are very very welcome!

I like to think of it a little like a stone hitting the water and creating small ripples. Still calm, but there is a lot of surface tension involved.
Dear sir you have a very touching „feel“ to play. The way you explain and shape the sound is just great

Awesome! I am so glad you are liking the series. I am planning on adding more episodes to the series in 2017, so stay tuned!
I love ninths and tenths too, cool lesson, i like your style.
Um, tenths are 3rds...... Or is this a joke.
Wow... I mean... WOW. This was the coolest lesson yet! Thanks Bill.
Thanks for sharing. I’m learning this kind of stroke for playing guitar in church God bless
best teacher ever..
Thanks for the kind words!
I love your videos. So clear, well explained, and very well produced. Also that Carvin sings. Love it.
Thanks!!
And the Carvin? Definitely one of my babies... :)

Excellent examples!! "Every Breath..." is a really good one to demonstrate how the 9th resolves to the octave.
@@chordsoforion ...As is AT SEVENTEEN by Janis Ian which keeps going to the major 7 and back to the octave to double the tension and relief.

Love this series!
love 9ths! especially bending them up!!!!!!
Nice!
Beautiful lesson. Thank you.
this is some amazing stuff
Glad you like it!!
I have created similar sounding patches on my digital processor which is a really cheap one.

It's always exciting to see an upload from you. It seems like the 9th intervals are always looking for resolution - is that what u mean by tension?
Yes, that's exactly what I mean!
ok, cool!

awesome!

What kind of effects are you using to make ambient music?. This music is fantastic!. Thanks...

Just look at some older videos, he have a few where he show you what effects he use.

Good points all!
Thank you a lot!...
Don't you use reverb as well as delay?
I do. Sometimes a pedal. Sometimes a plugin on my DAW. But sometimes, just a delay will do it.
can you do a video on how to write ambient chords ? ll
