    Another understated benefit of a flashlight is that it makes people super uncomfortable to know they are seen when they can't see. There's some kind of psycho-social dynamic about one way observation that makes people feel extra vulnerable. Same with one way mirrors, cameras, tinted windows.

      I accidentally sprayed it in a room I was in and for me it was brutal. Hurt like hell to see and to breath, even when I quickly left the room to the outside.
      Lasted about 20-30 minutes, and it took a few seconds (3-10) to really kick-in. That's my only issue with it... the time it takes to really affect the attacker.
      But some attackers will turn away for a few seconds, unknowingly giving it time, and that's good. Other experienced attackers might keep rushing, which could obviously be a problem. Then there's those it doesn't affect very much.
      So, I definitely always carry pepper spray, but also I carry other weapons in case I need it.

      I have no sensitivity to capsaicin. I have been directly pepper sprayed by accident when an inmate decided to finally get down as it was being sprayed at him. I caught a face full of industrial pepper spray and had no reaction. When we resumed pill line, one of the inmates said "nurse (last name withheld), I would never want to screw with you. You're a badass. The way you handled that pepper spray." My response was simple. I said "you shouldn't screw with anyone, especially any staff."

  • @Pouncer_Fox
    @Pouncer_Fox 2 ปีที่แล้ว +12

    Great video! Thanks for sharing this.
    I think pepper spray effectiveness is relative to how much and how quickly it gets into and interferes with the eyes, the nasal cavity, and the mouth. In other words, if the defender gets unlucky and sprays the assailant who managed to close their eyes and not breathe, they can last longer than someone who happened to get a direct hit with their eyes open and happened to be inhaling at the time.
    As for the flashlight, I absolutely agree with flash, bash, dash. The problem is I think some people who carry flashlights do not understand this, and leave it on, thinking that it's just the brightness of the light, and not the residual spotting afterwards that ends up providing the blinding effect. If a light is left on long enough, it can eventually become a point of reference for a bad guy to roughly shoot in that direction, for example.
    Perhaps I would rank the list a bit differently, but that would be minor detail. I think what is more important is to carry several of these items, and learning to use these tools in conjunction. I think you guys have mentioned this in other videos as well, but for example, the flashlight can be used in conjunction with a gun, but it is also entirely possible to use the flashlight in conjunction with the pepper spray. Flash, spray, and dash is perfectly viable as well.
    To me, and up to a point anyway, there is no reason to argue which tools are better than the other. Like debating whether the hammer is better than the saw, or if the saw is better than the pliers, or if the pliers are better than hammers. In the end, what is truly important is to have the right tools you need to solve the problem, available at a time when you need it the most.

    The less ineffective weapons were used in situations where they are obviously less effective. Guns are meant to be used at a distance, not in the fight already. Pepper spray is a deterrant so the user can run away from the attacker, or prevent the attacker from attacking in the first place. The point about the knife is valid but then you shouldn't be using a knife for self defense unless you've trained in how to use it.

    • @mastercat381
      @mastercat381 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Of course, but the point was to showcase the potential weaknesses of each. Guns are useless if you're already in a grapple, and they wanted to show that here. Pepper spray should be used as a deterrent, and doesn't always work as an immediate fight stopper, etc. But that doesn't mean they aren't effective in their element (see: countless Active Self Protection videos), just that you need to be aware of those shortcomings if you're going to carry them.

      Not true any well train person in any of the weapons in the video can show proper usability far or up close for instance firearms are very effective up close when trained in up close training making at far not only still effective but might result in not even being used in certain situations depending on how you read the attacker . Best weapon in a fight is the person brain it results in adaptability and effective measures to achieve your goal , not get killed

    • @jasonneil4121
      @jasonneil4121 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@sadflute8639 My point was that the weapons shown as 'less effective' were only shown in situations where they would be less effective. The amount of training a person has with something shouldn't be the only factor in determining the effectiveness of a self-defense weapon. It doesn't matter how good you can fight with a knife, the knife is pointless unless you are up close. If you are carrying a gun for self defense, it won't matter if your attacker has jumped you from behind and you can't draw the weapon. Even if you are trained in using a firearm in close proximity to your target, it is still wrong to use it in that way due to the increased chance of you being shot, or a poorly aimed shot hitting a bystander.

    Great test! I just have one complain:
    The person with a gun has to draw it, but the person with the pepper spray would have it already in hands and be aiming with it? If you have to draw your gun, you have to draw that spray as well, that was inconsistent. By having to draw both, the spray falls down the list, for sure. If you feel in danger and you are able to draw and aim a pepper spray, you would be able to draw and aim a handgun.

    • @Inv1cto
      @Inv1cto ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The point is that you shouldn't draw the gun unless someone is threatening you with lethal force. Pepper spray, on the other hand, can be drawn before you feel your life is in danger.

    • @TicTac-g7m
      @TicTac-g7m 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Actually you got that wrong. He said with pepper spray you might ALREADY have it drawn (in your hand already), but not yet aimed.
      So you only have to aim if you already have it in your hand, and they're small enough to keep in your hand without attracting too much attention.

    That’s actually the whole point of the course. To show you that you can fight if you’ve been sprayed (when you spray someone, you’ll probably catch some too) and that other people can fight after being sprayed.
    Having been sprayed 3 times now, it’s definitely a good deterrent to someone who isn’t committed, but as you’ve shown the fight isn’t likely to stop just with the spray if they are committed.

    • @connorperrett9559
      @connorperrett9559 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      It scares some people enough to do that, but a policeman's weapon is accompanied by the possibility for backup and the fact that cop killers will be punished even more severely than the average murder. Some criminals might see that you're a civilian openly carrying a weapon and try to take it off of you. Active Self Protection has several videos on his channel of open carriers being straight up executed or having their weapons taken off of their hips by criminals. If you open carry you need to be absolutely certain your situational awareness is on point and you cannot be comfortable with anyone being close to you from behind, even if you have a retention holster.
      You also have to worry about how other civilians might view you. People are used to cops having handguns on their hips, but Leftists who see a lawful citizen open carrying are quite likely to overreact. There have been open carriers who have been in total compliance with the law who have been stopped by police or even arrested because a gun grabber sees them carrying and calls the cops or makes a scene.

    Pepper sprays can vary in their potency.
    Make sure you get the strongest available (I think it’s 1.4% capsaicinoids).
    I keep it staged in my hand whenever I’m in sketchy places (like a Walmart parking lot 😄). I’m right handed and use a traditional stance, using my left hand to block and create distance and spray with my right, spray, then retract to avoid it being taken away….

    Vivo en Chile y he sido víctima de 3 asaltos, en el último estuve preparado con gas pimienta y fue sumamente efectivo y fácil de usar, además, el delincuente justo logró cubrirse con algo que tenía al frente, no obstante el mecanismo de acción de mi gas pimienta era en "Spray" y no en chorro, por tanto el asalante se inhabilitó casi instantáneamente al momento de defenderme, debo decir que me siento mucho más seguro con el gas pimienta que cualquier otra arma de defensa personal de contacto.

    There is prepared weapons deployments and unprepared weapons deployment and then there is your training. My advise is to focus on a weapon of lethality, like a pocket knife, or gun, and then a shape of common availability such as a stick or rock. If you really want to get into it. Go into sim training. Go to a building or environment and go have hand to hand combat with everything you expect to have around. For example, a classroom, chairs, calculator's, backpacks full of books, etc.

    Absolutely best weapon of self defense is to AVOID the whole situation where you may need a weapon. Second is your wits that allows you to avoid the situation worsening up to a fight. Third is your feets, you may run away from most situations.

    I'm a bit surprised that they didn't discuss the weapons in the thumbnail...
    Brass knuckles are in an odd spot. They frigging hurt to use seriously and they are neither particularly less-lethal nor do they have crazy stopping power. In a serious altercation, you better use a serious weapon, and if it's less serious, you can't use brass knuckles either...
    Bludgeoning weapons are a bit better. They have generally more range than a knife and are less lethal (unlike brass knuckles, you can hit limbs to dissuade someone). Most of them can also be used to parry and be used as a lever.
    Personally, I would have rated knives higher. However, it depends on the type and mode of carrying, but also your skillset. Most attacks begin without a warning and from close range, which is why guns are less effective than most people want them to be. Knives on the other hand rule supreme when it comes to weaponized grappling...
    Speaking of legality: those tactical lights are on the list of things the EU wants to ban! Brass knuckles and telescopic batons, saps, etc. are already banned or heavily restricted. The same goes for guns. Knives are mostly still available but don't make a good impression in court... The exception being that it's not a commando knife, but a tool you actually use every day... After all, you need to justify why you brought your gear into conflict just like you need to justify why you brought yourself into it... Even if you were seriously afraid, you can still look like some thug looking for trouble...
