    7:45, this is probably the reason why they ban fence grab. You're much bigger and it was almost impossible for you to take him down. Imagine if they were the same size, just a moment grab can recover from any takedowns.

    • @Slade3465
      @Slade3465 2 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      Ironically while it's a perfect reason to keep it, the original reason they made it illegal is different. In the early UFC the rules were a bit more lax and in one fight Tank Abbott against Paul Varelans is what made the rule change. th-cam.com/video/SgRKoHZ-J18/w-d-xo.html Here if you want to watch it yourself, can't see it very well in this but at one point Tank had Varelans up against the cage and was using the cage to rake the face of Varelans. The fight ends with Tank's knee on Varelan's face and neck, and pulling on the cage for extra leverage to sink the submission in more. He uses the cage as a weapon extensively enough the announcers are talking about it in the video.

      No they are not. They are illegal because they leave more permanent damage compared to their effectiveness. Finishing a choke is more effective than all of the moves shown here, but it's legal because you can tap to it, and even if you don't you only go to sleep for 30 seconds.

    I do wonder if the 12-6 elbow would be more powerful from a mount position as well. In the test you guys did, you can really sink your entire bodyweight into it, which you could not do as much while in your knees.

    • @jamiewarren2307
      @jamiewarren2307 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That would be interesting. I think the test they did was perfectly valid though because it is a decent simulation of stuffing a takedown, and I think that's the worse case because then a 12-6 elbow is really likely to land on the back of the head. I'd be curious to see what the power was like with grapevines from the mount or high mount which are both decent for keeping position while freeing up the hands.

    • @dennis1802
      @dennis1802 2 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Yes the downward elbow, goes better with body mechanics, your shoulder is meant to go up and down easier then rotating. Try the move and you’ll feel that your arms gets more stukck in the “normal” elbow position

    One thing that always gets me is in these types of tests, eye pokes are just treated like finger punches. There are so many more ways you can get someone in the eye. An eye poke doesn't require the same force as a punch to be effective, so you can still deal damage in positions where punches would not be effective (i.e. very close quarters).

    If kicks to the balls are treated just like any other technique, - meaning set up with punches, feints,
    used as part of combos - and not an "alleged instant win" (as it was shown here), - then their effects
    can go pretty far. Ranging from a TKO to an opportunity window for a KO. Just imagine that beside
    all the regular targets, every now and then after a 1-2 - a low kick flies intentionally full-power to the
    balls. Or is getting switched into a high kick to the head. Or the other way around. Or both or whatnot.
    In the early UFC it was actually legal, but was excluded quickly enough. Headbutts, on the other hand -
    were legal for a much longer time. And were used to a devastating effect, when some big dudes
    realized that a properly applied in a ground-and-pound scenario - it's like fighting with a weapon.
    Mark Kerr, a powerful and formidable wrestler of that time - was well known to put this technique to use,
    while it was still legal. In addition to Mark's size, strength and grappling - he truly owned his nickname:
    "The Smashing Machine". Most fighters would already be mentally defeated when he entered the cage.

    I always think of that crazy tang soo do guy in one of the early ufc fights who caught his opponent in crucifix and then rained about 3 12 - 6 elbows onto him. It was really nasty.
    A 12 - 6 on the back of the head is definitely dangerous! Theres also the chance of missing the head and hitting the point where the spine and the skull connect. ☠️

    My coach explained that it the 12-6 elbow was stronger because it uses more of the muscles that we use for throwing stuff, and apparently our body is quite adapted to throwing objects.
    For the groin shot, as far as my knowledge goes, it's the pelvic floor the what's the real killer. The nuts hurt but to reach the pelvic floor you have to really penetrate. Also as wonderboy said there might be little less surface on a illegal elbow, depending how you hit your legal elbow.

    I grew up competing in a point tournaments organization in Texas that just banned groin shots in the last five years. Prior to that, kicks to the groin were a legal point target. A cup was required equipment.These shots hurt and might require a time out, but we usually kept going. We never had a serious injury as a result. Before you say it was "just point fighting" many world champion kickboxers competed in this league. Although it is considered Medium to light contact, it was actually medium to hard contact. I've seen people get knocked out, the other person is awarded a point, and the fight continues after a medic checks them out. When we went to the groin, we intended to slow our oponent down. I saw more than one cup get cracked.

    I couldn't think of the video where you said "why would things get worse over time?" comparing traditional and modern, so I came here cause I thought of something:
    If you take evolution as a reference, the things that get worse over time are the things we use less and less frequently; use it or lose it. The next thing is a relative perception of violence; the lower the injury/death rate is, the more attention is given to any one instance of it.... (I'm skipping some steps here) The safer the world becomes, the more rules UFC will add until it becomes what karate was a few years ago.
    I only heard about this recently, but I wish I was alive during the early days of MMA cause I keep hearing we'd actually be able to see Karate and Kung fu contending with and even dominating over the other styles.

    Some of them also do disproportionate amount of damage to the body while in the cage. Back when Some of these moves were allowed the fighters would be fine in the cage but weeks or months later some serious problems started outside of the cage later ending Some of there careers.

    I got pocked in the eye many years ago when I was first training karate as a green belt, it dropped me like a stone, from the injury I got corneal cell erosion, which is basically an ulcer growing on your cornea, its a type of bacterial infection, the upshot is I nearly lost my eye ! without treatment the ulcer would have eaten a hole in my eye and once the inner eye is exposed to the outer atmosphere the eye is gone ! I needed intense treatment, anti biotics in my eye every hour on the hour for 5 days in hospital, specialist eye unit. It healed eventually but had to scare to do so, very very luckily the scare is not in the centre of my eye so it doesn't affect my vision but if it was in the centre I'm told I'd only have 20% vision in that eye. Eye pocks are very dangerous, I would say though if it was life or death stick your finger in your attackers eye, it stopped my attack instantly !!!

      @@killersalmon4359 well I don't expect them to actually change the cages. It's probably much cheaper to just keep the cages and leave the rules. But it would be cooler if they had actual walls..... still then some fighters would find ways to throw the opponent into that hard surface. There's no perfect solution for this format of fighting. Maybe have the fighters at a sunken level box arena with padding on the walls....

    The lack of padding on that head gear makes it supremely vulnerable to downward elbow strikes.

    Problem with the eye poke simulation is that eye poked usually happen while the person getting poked is exchanging and on the offensive, it is the defensive posture that is committing the infraction. The opposite of this video

    I feel like this has been discussed a lot in the internet martial arts community, but it's cool to see. It's hard to poke eyes and kick groins, but a trained fighter is going to be a lot better at setting up and executing those techniques than someone who doesn't routinely practice sparring.

    • @HexenStar
      @HexenStar 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Absolutely. Even a less-than-average practitioner, yet the kind who has already learned
      the concept of properly setting up kicks, - will have no problem catching an opponent
      with a full-force low kick aimed at the balls.

    A eye poke is a perfect first strike strategy in a street fight, not so after the first strike. A groin shot or grab is a perfect "immediate end of fight" strategy. It's situationnal tho. You don't have to purposely aim for it. It's a situational shot you instinctively do if the guy is wide open.

    imo cage should be replaced with plexiglass. It both solves the problem of being able to grab it or injure yourself with it while also adding an element that could be used legally in the fight, like the cords are in boxing.

    As a painter I have had stuff blown into my eyes quite often and even slightly lacerated so I'll share the most common reaction . You jerk your head away instantly as it shuts and you put your hands up to it but you can barely physically force yourself to open it , or even the other eye. . Once the eyeball itself is either cut or depressed the nervous system takes over and theres a type of spasm and a fluttering sound like you can actually hear the nerves. It's usually a good minute before you can get it to open and try to start treating it somehow. You certainly aren't going to be fighting very well. Now in the middle of a bout where you are pumped up and already taking shots then sure, it will be less effective. But in say a sudden self defense situation it's hard to think of a better opening shot if you are at a strength disadvantage

    Grabbing the cage during a takedown: if it were allowed that would prompt strikes to the braced hand/wrist which would increase the likelihood of breaks, dislocations, and lacerations.
