  • It hasn't been dubbed the Brexit breakdown for nothing. The fear, the loathing and the anger over our exit from the EU have cut deep.
    (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
    We wanted to find out what Brexit says about us - why our arguments have become so angry, so uncompromising - and why so many feel such despair.
    So, in a special new series, we asked the psychoanalyst Susanna Abse to put Britain on the couch. Susanna has travelled the country with our very own Channel 4 News couch, meeting people and politicians from both sides of the divide.
    Tonight, we head to Grimsby which was once the fishing capital of the world, and where two thirds of people voted to leave.

    Besides fish and chips, and fish fingers, isn't the decline in UK fishing also down to the fact that British people generally don't eat much seafood. When I go to the fishmongers you often find more Asians and Europeans in the queue, and the fish counters in supermarkets are often sparse and quiet. Most of the good stuff (like lobsters and spider crabs) get exported to other European countries where they are appreciated. So how would 'taking back control' of the waters and putting on extra taxes and delays on exports help these fishermen? it will not. I think the industry needs to somehow reinvent itself and to get more people eating fish/seafood.

    • @MrChriss000
      @MrChriss000 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because British caught fish etc used to be half the price, but because there is nothing left in the med our neighbors have effectively raised the prices.
      When I was a boy we had fish and chips evening meal twice a week, a fish breakfast once a week, (whatever we fancied) then prices meant it was cheaper to eat meat so it was Saturday evening late supper from the chippy and that was that.

    • @matthewyabsley
      @matthewyabsley 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe shmoe - Leaving the EU doesn’t then make your fish cheaper, stupid! Britain sells 73% of British territorial water fish. They’re not going to suddenly stop selling it and even if they did change the end destination they’re not going to sell it for less than they can sell it elsewhere.

    This didn't really tell us anything! The UK has never had its own fishing grounds. Sucessive UK governments have fought 'tooth and nail' to maintain open access for all to the high seas, including three 'cod wars' with Iceland in attempts to prevent the extension of fishing limits. The UK has has also lost several international court cases - long before the EU was even dreamt of by the way - against countries imposing fishing limits. When the UK government had to bow to the inevitable and accept that there was international agreement that fishing limits were both wanted and necessary they drew up the London Fisheries Convention that allowed co-signatories to fish within the UK 12 mile limit in return for UK access to waters within their 12 mile limit. It was a free for all beyond 12 miles. Subsequent to the UK entering what is now the EU, international fishing limits were extended to 200 miles. The EU then allocated fish quotas based on what national fleets had caught in those waters. The UK deep sea fishing fleet fished mainly off Iceland in waters which were now closed to them. Compensatory grounds were not opened up to them in what had now become EU waters because they had not previously fished there. Additionally it was a UK government that allowed fish quotas to be sold independently of the boat used to catch the quota. This resulted in big business taking over leaving independent fishermen with the insignificant, less profitable end of the market. The inshore fishermen think that by leaving the EU they will be able to fish for what they like in any quantity, export the fish they catch and make more money. This will not happen. If their quotas are increased they will find that big business will demand that theirs are increased as well, resulting in overfishing and the EU, the main export market for UK caught fish, will not accept fish caught from an unsustainable source, in other words, they will buy no more than they currently do.

    • @simonjohn9525
      @simonjohn9525 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @Russian Troll so Im told The 200 mile fishing limit was included in the UK's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) by the UN Conference on the Law of the Sea in 1977, 4 years after the UK joined what is now the EU. Prior to that the the UK only had a 12 mile fishing limit which as I've already said was given away in the 1964 London Fisheries Convention allowing co-signatories to the convention to fish within it in return to similar access to their waters. Up until 1977 the English Channel and North & Irish Seas were fished by Russian and Polish factory ships and was completely unregulated beyond the 12 mile limit. UK fishermen have never had exclusive access to these waters so the call to take back control is false. Should we gain exclusive access to waters within the 200 mile fishing limit it will be the first time in history that UK fishermen will have had this and precisely because successive UK governments have objected to it.

    People stating the fishing industry is finished. No, what will be finished is foreign owned boats captained by British captains.The majority of what is Europe’s most lucrative sea and the loop hole will be closed. There’s billions of pounds ready to invest in what will potentially be one of Britain’s biggest assets... There’s a reason the EU fought long and hard to get access to our waters.. currently 60% of fish caught in our waters is landed abroad... But again that doesn’t tell the whole story, the loop whole allows our fish to be landed in the U.K. but the boat and its catch are also foreign owned.. Only the captain has to be British..
    The potential for us to grow our fishing fleets is immense, as we are currently importing fish caught in our own waters back from the EU owned vessels landed here and abroad...
    It’s no accident what was a fishing industry in almost every coastal town along our shores has been decimated.. It was the the main price to pay for EU membership back in 73...
    It’s no accident the EU countries are bleating about us leaving and how their fishing industries are at risk if they can’t rape and pillage our waters...

      FunnyTummyART I’ll give you one small example. I took my little dog to the vets last week. I had to sign a special form giving the vet permission to use a drug that is licenced for humans but not for animals. The vet explained the active ingredient in the drug is exactly the same but he couldn’t afford the drug (and many other drugs) without putting up his prices significantly to his customers. I asked him why this was the case. He rolled his eyes and said it was EU drug licensing law that the U.K. and the U.K. veterinary college had not wanted. The EU makes hundreds of thousands of laws like this that silently and invisibly impact on the public in the U.K. Normal people aren’t aware of them. And by the way, the vet told me he and all of his colleagues had voted to leave.
