    Over the years, people have noticed that when I play certain runs, my fingers move in the opposite direction of the notes that they hear.
    For example, as my fret hand moves up the fretboard, the sequence of notes that is heard descends (and vice versa). For this month's column, I've put together a few runs that demonstrate this unusual approach as applied to both ascending and descending patterns.
    This kind of "positional wizardry" can be used to generate interesting melodic patterns that can be used in a variety of ways.

    He is always so relaxed sounding. His blood pressure is about 50/50 and a pulse of 25. Either really good weed OR just a really passive guy. Either way he is awesome all around!

    I don't know if it's a product of the Illuminator pickups, or if it's due to GW/youtube compression, but I'm not loving JPs tone in these videos. The high end is brittle sounding to my ears.

      hueseph I have disabled any effects on my end. Every time someone, Mr. Petrucci in this case, takes a pause in their speech, it goes to total silence for a moment. It creates an illusion of someone just flipping an on/off switch.

      omg dude! They are horrible. I complain about it all the time on their vids. You can't go from hearing room ambience to a 100% noise gated mic in 1 second. GUITAR WORLD, leave the fucking room ambience in! It will sound BETTER!

    I do the same thing he does (change the pattern whilst moving across the strings).
    When I learned the intro run to “Mary Jane” I learned it the way Mustaine does it (descending down the neck), but after learning the notes translated it into a four to five-fret box. But, that requires changing patterns on each string.
    It is a pain in the ass, at first, but once learned it is more economical as far as left-hand movement.

      +MercifulFate indeed those above XD , still not sure if its the same but on the dvd the one called Live at Budokan he uses a small square metallic box to always have support on the solos and he puts his leg there, that or there are some little black paint like bench things to get your knee while sitting , i think i saw that on some Young guitar with Arch Enemy videos.

      Use a metronome and increase by like 5 bpm at a time if you're really stuck, but sounds like you're doing nothing wrong, it just takes a shit ton of practice to play that fast and keep it clean.

    could anyone help me ? i'm trying to get a tone close to the tone in the intro (I know it's not possible to get the exact same tone with different gear) , i've kinda figured out the amp settings and all , what i want to know is that is there some sort of modulation effect in there ? it sounds so liquid-ish...maybe a bit of a chorus ? could anyone tell ?

    • @Xirrious
      @Xirrious 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Minor chorus perhaps, reverb or short delay tho adds that liquid effect a long with a very clean fluid overdrive, if your amp sucks you'll need to crank it way up.

    • @ads99nrg
      @ads99nrg 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      John Grantham thanks man !

    • @AentikDranikan
      @AentikDranikan 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      +NRG _one and only_ well some pick ups give that sound as the one Jani iimatainen have on most records he does sound soft so thats more his pick up than anything else he uses Dimarzio never saw uses a distortion pedal but should help still the nature come from the pick up, try different strings as well what i do is use either mellow or sharp extreme tone so with my pedals i tweak the high aand lows to get different tone , dont choose mellow strings with a mellow dist pedal or setting try a medium one so you can have more possibilites still dont copycat try to create your own , i recommend you Record an instrumental song and hear yourself playing solos, rythms, clean check them as whole and see if that set works but listen to those in a song so you know more accurate as a whole.

    • @ads99nrg
      @ads99nrg 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      *****
      thanks for all that input , man :) i'd definitely keep those in mind

    • @Xirrious
      @Xirrious 9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      NRG _one and only_ that's all good advice. Truthfully you'll have a problem replicating that tone without a Mesa amp and the pickups he uses, but as far as effects and amp settings I am pretty positive petrucci scoops his mids, and also reverb helps blend the notes a bit into a more fluid sound. You can emulate it for sure, good luck!

  • @samnorris7693
    @samnorris7693 9 ปีที่แล้ว

    That's a really nice musicman guitar. The only thing I think might make it better is if around the 17th or 18th fret, the neck didn't swell up. You should check out Gelvin guitars. They aren't bolt-on, he will make a set neck but his guitars are one piece of wood for the body, neck and headstock. He has some interesting pickup ideas as well. It would be worth a visit to his website.
