    Do you set goals for the year ahead?

    • @dianeo
      @dianeo 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes! I had already planned to do a Daily Declutter, meaning I will pick one spot whether it's a closet or just a drawer, tabletop or file and discard as much as possible while organizing the rest. Every. Single. Day. Today I'm tackling my desk.

      I plan my entire year: General Goals for 2019.

    • @amandagraham3859
      @amandagraham3859 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I am taking part in the Apartment Therapy January Cure. Finishing that is my first goal.
      Then I want to get my husband to go through his closet and drawers to get rid of ill fitting clothes. He has kept off 50 lbs for over two years. I think his clothes from heavier times can help someone else.

      @@amandagraham3859 what is apartment therapy? I have never heard of that.

    • @amandagraham3859
      @amandagraham3859 5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Apartment Therapy is a home design/lifestyle website. Every January they do a month of emails, reminding you to do a small daily task to get rid of clutter, repair things, and do a deep clean. Over a month you can get a lot done a little at a time.

    I have lost 60 lbs. since Oct. 2017 so my goal is to continue losing weight. This year, I would like to get below 200 lbs. The last time I remember being under 200 lbs. is 1999. I currently weigh 232 lbs. so my goal is very attainable. :)

      @@babybop0123 I lost all my weight following the Weight Watchers (WW) program. It works as long as you work the plan. I believe it's the number 1 weight loss recommended by doctors, it is healthy, and it does work. You can do it via an online program; however, I do go to WW meetings and I also have online access. I wish you the very best in your weight loss journey....I have struggled with my weight my entire life; even as a child and this is the hardest thing I've done.

      Janelegant Wow! Congratulations on your health journey!! I was watching the midnight kickoff of the QVC TSV (Today’s Special Value) of Fast Five Nutrisystem, and several people mentioned WW working well. Now, I’m really intrigued. 😂I’m going to do some research today on it; I’m gluten-free, peanut-free, several sensitivities, and leaning towards more of a pescatarian eating. It’s hard to find plans that work for me. ♥️ 🥂 here’s to even more healthy success in the coming year!

      I’m terrible at budgeting, but my mantra for this year is only buying the essentials. Do I need tissues, and air in my tires? Yes. Do I need that new lipstick that came out? Nope. If I really decide I want something I’ll have to consider how much I’ll actually use it.

      I would like to suggest that anyone trying to sell their stuff, rethink doing that and donate if possible instead. If you have a comfortable life, new home, new car, etc., and plenty of what you need, do you really need that extra money from your old stuff? There are a whole lot of people out there that have not been as fortunate as you and they need the help. Donating your old furniture, clothing etc., can make a huge difference.

Then I know it’s time to bag it up (box of trash bags conveniently hidden behind) and drive it to the donation bin! It’s there, day in and out. My 3 older kids use it as well as they have watched me purge over the years.

    I try to set small, specific goals instead of resolutions! I find it much easier to stick to small, specific goal set for a short amount of time than a vague resolution you set to do for a whole year.
    I decluttered in the summer. Every drawer, closet, cupboard, the shed..everything! I came up with so much stuff to be donated or was just garbage that we didn't have a need for. I did the same thing before christmas and donated all the decorations I had no intention of keeping to put out and also went through the closets and storage room again. Another 5 boxes of stuff..just stuff! Needless to say I find it so much easier to stay organized and keep the house clean and tidy because there's less clutter. I love it

    I said a word and phrase for the year. 2019 is stride. Find my stride so I can flourish. And then I said quarterly goals. so I have goals related to morning and evening routines and routines that I do on a weekly or monthly basis. For me stride is about developing habits that I don't have to really think about I just naturally do. That is something that was really missing in the last few years and I want to really focus on that this year. not all of these goals are but cleaning I also want to have a habit of exercising and meditating and journal writing and working on my novel.

    I set goals for specific periods of time during the year. For example, my goal for the summer is to clean up and beautify our yard and farm plus I want to crop, label, and organize all of the digital copies of our printed photos while my kids are at 4-H project meetings. In order to accomplish the outside work, I know that I need to focus on simplifying my home and schedule to make it possible to spend time outdoors this summer. Thinking ahead to my future goals helps me set present goals and tasks to make it possible to meet those future goals.

    I am actually in a Facebook group where local teachers can ask the group for items they could use in their classrooms. Or we can offer things we have around the house for anyone who wants it. First teacher to inquire gets the item. Then they can porch pickup or I offer delivery to their school. I’ve gotten rid of many things this way and it’s great.

  • @HowToGYST
    @HowToGYST 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    One of my top decluttering tips is to find a cause close to your heart and donate to that. For example, unused toiletries & cosmetics can go to a women's shelter, stationery can go to a school that may be low on funding, toys to a children's hospital, etc. And because those situations usually involve handing the things to an actual person who works there and is passionate about the cause (rather than just dropping it off somewhere), their warmth and gratitude makes me want to give even more. The "feel good" factor, for me, is much higher, and I'm more likely to want to continue to help.
    I once donated some stationery to a teacher and she was so incredibly appreciative. She told all the other teachers. Every time I went to drop my daughter off or pick her up for several weeks afterwards, someone from the school would approach me and thank me. At the end of the year, I went back with a massive donation of toys and books.

    Yes, this is the second year I've chosen a word/theme for the year and created goals for myself. This year's them is BE CONSISTENT. In the past, I've done well with goals but stop after a time. I want to work on being consistent this year. I have both short and long-term goals for the year in five categories: personal, health, spiritual, financial and home. A couple very close friends are accountability partners this year, of which I'm very appreciative. Watching Tidying Up with Marie Kondo on Netflix has encouraged me to only keep items that are purposeful or "spark joy". Happy New Year CMS!

      Pamela Flynn Great planning Pamela. I choose a theme vs a word as well. I have found that themes are usually worded in the active voice or with an active verb. As we all know, we need to have action not just inspiration. This year my theme is “liberate my personal power” I have several goals this year that will require the elevation of my personal power. My TH-cam channel for one and moving my consulting/coaching business to online to liberate me from spending so much time onsite with clients AND liberating me from wasting time and fuel on travel. Yes, I do set goals. We are back in Nova Scotia after a five year adventure in Labrador and will be building our last home this coming summer. We have boxes of stuff to go through. I made good progress in the fall and now am back at it. My goal is to sort four boxes a week until I'm done. My other goals are to continue disciplines such as my Buddhist practices, drawing and writing. I'm also on a new cleaner eating regime. The decluttering mindset includes weight I don't love or need, guilt that helps no one, people who do not enrich my life, and practices (like facebook) that only serve to sadden or enrage me. I feel lighter and brighter as I go.

After waiting for him to organise his things after 3 years I have now started to declutter his stuff when he is at work and just wait to see if he asks for anything or notice if anything has been moved. I stopped making resolutions a few years ago because I didn’t keep them throughout the year. I’m a planner user, so I had decided, recently, to have goals for this year...one of which is to finish my apartment...unpacking and more importantly, decluttering. Shredding papers is so boring, and that’s why I have too much to shred now. I agree, tho, that seeing the basket, or, in my case, the box of papers to shred become empty, is refreshing and rewarding. If I could take it all to a place where I could shred more papers at a time, I’d definitely go there. Thanks for your video...it was definitely helpful.

    I always set goals. Last year I "only" did two of them, but I made attempts at most of the others, so that's a start! I evaluate every year and try to make small improvements on things that bothered me the previous year. Or look at why goals failed the previous year and how to be more realistic this year.

    So I hate New Years resolutions and haven't bothered making them the last few years, but this year I actually started something January 1st... My goal is to use a planner and stick to it! I'm realizing more and more that I have such good intentions of things I want to do on my weekends or evenings but it's so easy to get sidetracked by life working out, practicing music, shopping so that I can make dinner, using language learning apps...all things I want to do but have trouble sticking to. Bought myself a cute planner and doing my best to reasonably plan out things to do every week :)

    I am downsizing and moving this year. Lots of things to go through. I already have a donate pile going. I also have ideas of where to pass on some things I know family will want. I think the hardest part is deciding what to keep and what to toss when things are equally useful. Your utility drawer had several pairs of scissors. In my mind I was trying to decide which ones could go to donate or trash. I know it is time to thin out my t-shirt collection! Some have already been designated "pajamas" and should probably actually be designated cleaning rags instead. 😆 So many decisions! Thanks for the encouraging video!

    I am so ready for a "less is more" year! I just also wanted to say thanks for the Black Friday sale! My cloths arrived before Christmas but wanted to use them when I had a chance to really get stuck in to some cleaning, and the cloths are such great quality! I am also using a DIY cleaner (your all purpose recommendation) and it cleans surprisingly well! Thanks CMS!

    Happy New Year!! After years of making New Year resolutions I gave up. Instead, I make monthly goals/resolutions and it's working out well for me. This minth is my cleaning out the junk I no longer need and focusing on more organization. I'm generally clean and organized but I want to fine tune it.

    My goals for this year is to not care about what others think of me, make more time for myself, and not use my tech stuff too much. I actually bought a 1000 piece puzzle in 2017 December, and now I’m finally doing the puzzle. So every time I finish eating, I go to the puzzle not my phone or laptop👍🏼👍🏼!!

    No 1 goal is continuing craft , take some time for myself. I haven't been able to to that in over a year, for I am helping my husband with his continuing physical needs and assisting him a little bit with him in his office odd things that he can not do at this time. Work on selling some small pieces of furniture, don't lay something down put it where it belongs. Get more organized. Our recycling company will take clothes that you do want anymore.
    After watching you video on cleaning out your refrigerator, I did it in two stages (for it was late at night). I through away the items that needed to be thrown out, emptied the container of old food and set them by the sink to be washed in the morning. Then I completed it the next morning.
    We had numerous boxes that needed to be broken down, because my neighbor is so kind to take recycling out I didn't think I was fair for him to take all the boxes out (for the last month it has been raining on recycling day and no boxes could be put out). Because of my bad knee it took a while to get them to the curb. But I felt so good that it got down. I will get there in little bits.

    My goal is to clean out and declutter my closet, bathroom, bedroom sitting room and craft room. I have stuff sitting everywhere and since my daughter moved into my room with me, the stuff has taken over. My (adopted) son moved in with us and she was a sweetheart and gave up her room for him.
    And my word for this year is peace or peaceful.

    I put a cutlery tray in my "junk drawer," and voila! … no more junk. Everything stays neat and tidy, year after year. Decided to try the Konmari method to organize my drawers and closets, pantry and linen closet. By gum, everything fits so nicely now, and I even have EMPTY drawers for the first time in my life. The goal for 2020 is to clean and paint every wall, window sill and baseboard in my house -- it's been 15 years, so that task is overdue. I'll never actually redecorate, since all my furnishings are family heirlooms, but I can change colors for a whole new look.

    My 2019 intentions are to eat healthier, drink more water, move more and create more often. I'm a paper crafter and I also am learning to paint some really basic things, so for me that's fun. Also in the 'move more' department, my husband and I love to dance, so we've planned a lot of dancing 'date nights' coming up!

    I actually don't set them at the beginning of the year, but rather in the end of the previous year in December. I found that setting up for the new year before it even starts is a great way to keep the momentum going for the habits I wants to keep and habits I want to do less of.

    You asked folks to comment about paper shredding - I am a Records Manager and that's my jam! Check with your local authorities, but hard-copies are no longer needed in most states (except insurance and property docs, deeds, titles, etc.). I recommend buying a decent desktop scanner so you can digitize your paper. Save things in folders by year - for example name the folder "2019 financial docs - destroy 01-01-2027". And yes, I love shredding paper... right after I scan it!! Make sure you have a cloud storage or backup copy of these items.

    My kids are now 14 & 12, but when they were little we would go threw their toys before holidays & birthdays. It helped declutter before any new toys came in, and we made it a point to let them know that there were kids that would really love to have new toys. It made it an enjoyable process for my kids, they were happy to give their things to others in need 💕 teenagers aren’t as kinda haha

    My husband and I have agreed that we will go through our entire home. He is retiring from the US Coast Guard and it has been challenging to declutter since he is literally not home half the year. He is at sea now but I am doing my part to get into the swing of things by making this rule. If I open any draw, cabinet or closet I am taking time right then and there and choosing things that need to go. I have organized two bathroom closets. We must have had like 30 bottles of hand lotion. I donated unopened and threw out a ton. there are only eight hands and eight paws living in the home. When he is home we are planning on a major shift of rooms. My sewing room is very cold. My son loves the cold so he's moving there. The sewing room is moving to the family room. My daughter has a tiny room so moving her to my son's. Our guest room is currently in the dining room and will move to my daughter's. The family room furniture is moving to the living room and we are selling what is already there. The office will move to the dining room since we have a large eat in kitchen and the current office will become a lovely sitting room or family area. Every time a I walk into any room I am thinking about what we can let go of.
