I’m here in 2023 almost crying with this beautiful performance. One day almost everyone in humanity will be cultivated and rich in artistic appreciation.
Sarah Chang is a genius and the greatest violinist since Paganini although we only know of his playing from hearsay. This concerto is probably the most frequently played in the repertoire but nobody has ever played it like this and most probably never will. Quite simply, the definitive performance with an orchestra to match the Berlin Philharmonic and truly great conducting.
Come on! Not True! Give me a break! Are you kidding me! Sarah Chang has thin colorless dry cold violin sound like Black and White tv picture! Chang is so boring! Sarah Chang never played in the big violin competitions and the reason is no prizes for colorless dry cold violin sound Chang! Crazy world we are living when the crazy deaf people claiming weak colorless dry cold violin sound Chang is the greatest! Classical music is so sick business! You do not see this other areas in life!!
When people comment negatively about Sarah Chang, I just can't understand what it is they want from this incredible, crazy, manic music. Do they think that only really restrained playing is correct? This is pop music! It just happens to be old pop music. It's supposed to be exciting and explosive. The way Chang laughs and dances and makes the music explode is how it's meant to be. You can tell that she really gets it.
I think the audience's reaction shows that this performance is outstanding. For my part, I have seen her play this concerto in concert and she must be ranked among the greatest living violinists. I never watch this video without being immensely moved and reminded of the greatness that humankind can aspire to.
I was the first person in the UK to interview Sarah Chang. She was just a kid who had been bundled off a plane from Philadelphia and whisked to the EMI London studios, hardly knowing where she was. To break the ice I gave her a tube of Polo mints and we both munched away. Happy days, happy days. I try not to think of the contrast between her subsequent career and mine...She's lovely.
I love the way Sara plays this movement, perhaps more aggressive than others but I like it this way. In fact when I saw her play this live last week she 'danced' as she played and in this movement got so carried away with the music that she bought her foot down with a loud and aggressive 'Crack' at one point. Sarah's my favourite Violinist, I love the emotion that she shows and she also has her own interpretation of the music that she is playing, along of course with an enormous amount of skill
I have seen quite a few supposedly top violinists play this live and believe me, Sarah Chang is in a different league to the rest when it comes to performing the Bruch Violin Concerto. So much more power and passion from her compared to others.
jean de la croix The true test is to see this played live, I am very lucky to have seen this played by many top violinist's including Sarah Chang and Janine Jansen. Big difference as I said before, Sarah has '' So much more power and passion compared to others.'' Part of it is her technique, even as a little girl she always had a ''Big sound'' due to her athletic bowing action, quite noticeable when you see them play live. Some violinists are a struggle to hear, eg as one critic said '' where some others squeak like mice, Sarah roars like a Lion. Also Sarah has one of the very best violins ever made. Eg quote Wikipedia ''Janine plays with a 1727 Stradivari "Barrere" violin, which was on loan from the Stradivari Society of Chicago.'' ''Sarah Chang plays the 1717 Guarneri del Gesù violin, which she received through the late Isaac Stern'' The Guarneri has a very deep and dark tone, an ultra powerful sound which enables it to carry such a long way. When Sarah was only 14 years old , she was given many violins to test out by her mentor ''Issac Stern'' After testing them all she chose this one and her family purchased it from Stern, she has played the same ''Magic'' violin ever since. Lastly both fine violinists as are many others around today. As to who you like is often just personal taste, but watching them on a video is a world of difference to seeing them play live.
Please just accept that this lady has been touched by a rare talent to play the violin in a magical way since she was a little girl and her fans adore her and love to see her play. To hear her perform brings sunshine and happiness for us in a sometimes grim and unhappy world. There is nothing you can say that will change that so either listen and enjoy or go to other ones you may prefer and leave us in peace to enjoy her performances, goodbye.
I guess she's just enjoying the fact that she can play whatever she wants anyway she wants at the moment. Well what can we do about it? She's already at the maestro level. One thing I am sure about Ms. Sarah is it's never boring when she plays.
There is only one word to describe this performance "WOW". Sarah Chang bounces off the walls in her passion and excitement, I believe she really loves this piece and by God doesn't it show! I know that this kind of style and technique is not everyone's cup of tea but I think she plays the "Bruch" live better than any other violinist in the World today.
Sarah Chang is a great artist and wonderfu person ! Also Tokyo Orchestra is a wonderful ! Listening such wonderful performance is a great pleasure and jenuine hapinees !!
@no1knowledge In my mind, she's one of the greatest violinists ever! Because she doesn't just play the notes perfectly, she captures the personality of each piece she plays! I would be thrilled to meet her in person! I've played through the 1st 2 movements of this concerto myself, and it's very difficult. I hope that I can become HALF the violinist that she is! You rock, Sarah Chang!
I am a Sarah Chang fan!!!!! she has this wonderful style that i wish one day i can have. Everyhitng she plays has her own style to it and it is amazing. Although i do love other violin virtuosos like Perlman, Heifetz, Bell, and Midori; i have to say that sarah is the one that mostly tugs at my heart :)
I agree. Chang's performances have hardly changed since she was starting out. It is her style and will always remain that way. Her performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto when she was 11 is also a case in point. There is only one performance of her on TH-cam, I suggest watching it.
I saw Sarah play this Bruch Violin Concerto live in London, back in October 2012, she even wore this same dress for the performance !! Absolute magic, so many encores, the audience loved every second of her performance. Sarah plays differently to other top violinists, much bigger sound that travels right to the back of the theatre, yes agree ''Astonishing and superb play!! So much passion and emotion!'' Yes you hit the nail on the head there !! Sarah Chang was at her peak around this time, both in body and playing ability. She gets tired travelling around now on long air flights and on her twitter says she gets headaches whilst doing her non stop travelling and misses her dog ''Chewy'' so much.
I am enjoying the artistry of this lady very much and in my mind am remembering the first time I saw Midori perform on the Johnny Carson show. I was totally wowed by such a talented young girl but now with Sarah Chang I really relate to her interpretation. Not being a violinist myself I can't speak to the technical aspects of it, but the passion is there and I am anxious to hear what else she will play.
@yurietyler No one but no one can equal Sarah in playing this Bruch Concerto. My god when I saw her playing it live last week it was a staggering performance and all around me everyone could not believe the wonderful and perfect way she played this. She showed so much emotion and played every movement perfectly, some just play but Sarah lives the music as she plays it with all of her heart and soul !!
Still watching this video ten years later. It is still by far the best performance of this piece. I like the fiery, no nonsense attitude of the young Sara Chang. She absolutely shredded it with incredible passion and precision. This is how this piece should be played. She is the embodiment of music, an unbelievable gift from heaven. I feel so lucky to have the opportunity to watch and hear this. Wonder when and where this was performed. She was obviously 'on' on this particular day and there is nothing in the world more satisfying than experiencing the once in life performance of a musical genius who is 'on'.
I am doing this with the Fort Smith Symphony (Arkansas) and Joshua Bell tomorrow night. We have done the Sibelius concerto with this lovely girl previously.
SHE ROCKS!! I have the sheet music for this concerto, I've learned how to play and memorized the 1st 2 movements. But this one I find to be very challenging, because there are double stops and sudden position shifts all over the place. She makes it look so easy, but it really is not. She's such a beautiful woman, and she plays it so skillfully and effortlessly. I like how she's showing some skin but not too much...she looks sexy but in an elegant, classy way. I want to play like this very soon!
There do seem to be a great many comments here about her tone and I think it's important to remember something. This is a live performance and the microphone placement and acoustics can sometimes cause the sound to alter somewhat. Often these anomalies can take a rather unflattering form and as her tone in other videos is different from this one I expect that is what has happened. I like it though, it gives the piece fire. Anyway why criticize when there is so much to enjoy?
Sarah Chang is a fine Violinist, been performing at a high level since she was a young girl. She brings classical music to people worldwide, inspires many young people to learn to play an instrument. She is in the modern mould and what stuffy comments here seem to forget is that we are living in the 21st century classical music has to compete with other forms of entertainment so its common sense that the modern musicians have to be more media friendly and look good than the people of the past.
Sarah Chang is playing so that the whole concert hall can hear her, she has a very big sound and even at the back of the hall you can hear her easily unlike many others. Go see her live before you complain about her performance. With some violinist's you have to strain to hear them , not the case with Sarah, saw her play this live in London, the audience verdict was that she was a sensation and many had never heard it played better !!

I think this is the musical equivalent of taking a few cups of coffee in the morning! I believe Bruch intended this movement to sound like a sudden, invigorating burst of energy. And with her aggressive technique, that's exactly what it sounds like! I'm teaching myself to play this piece, but it's very hard. She makes it look so easy but it's not.
@hodgrix I agree! It isn't that it sounds bad, it's that she puts so much emotion into her playing! I like her style of playing because of it's overwhelming power and it is something that I always want to hear again.
I would love to see her live. She has such energy and passion that it must be an amazing experience. In terms of her videos on TH-cam, my favourites are the early ones. I agree with everything you say. Sarah Chang brings me a lot of pleasure and brightens up many a grim day as I listen to her playing like a little angel with her lovely music.

The strength of her bow arm is alarming. It’s noble
I'm here in 2022. Her passion never gets old.
정말 개쩌는 연주..왜 한국엔 이런 연주자가 더이상 안 나오는 걸까
best version ever !
her reaction at the end... here is someone who truly enjoys performing!!!
Her performance is powerful, exquisite, emotional and charismatic. She is a flame. 🔥🔥
